www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3406704/Queens-Park-Rangers-sign-Peterborough-striker-Conor-Washington-2-8m-deal.html There were a few clubs after Washington. P'boro had already paid Newport £220K, plus they get a 25% sell on fee of £700K. So they sold him for £1.8M less what they had invested in him. A player is worth what someone is willing to pay. Did we have any other interest/offers for Nasser. If we're not happy with £350K then say no thanks. You could suggest that he only wanted to play for Jimmy but I don't know about that. What if Ronald Koeman had made a bid? You could also suggest he doesn't want to play for Nigel. I don't know that either but there was some obvious friction whenever he was subbed off. When Jimmy was here he often said that Nasser could play in the Championship. At the end of the day I think Nasser wants to play as high a level he can, and he knows Jimmy believes in him. Confidence is a big part of success in this game so I think he has made the right move. He helped us get promoted and to the top of League One plus we get a decent fee. Everyone's a winner. On the Football League Tonight show tonight they said that QPR paid £2.5M for Washington? Somebody's not tellin'.

It's not a decent fee, unless there are add ons(sell on clause plus so many appearances money etc) JFH has a bargain and many people will see it as not a good piece of business, maybe not needing to sell the best players is simply not true. To say JFH has a bargain is an understatement. My own personal opinion is that we wouldn't and possibly couldn't say "no thanks" to £350k, something the buying club were clearly well aware of. If we refuse it then we're out of pocket at a time when we possibly need the money to go back into the club and we're left with a player that doesn't want to be here and as far as we know there were only two clubs genuinely interested, both of whom are managed by people who know our club inside out. He's had a whole month to come back for him and it's been left until 2 days before the end of the transfer window for us to be offered the change in Tony Fernandes coat pocket. To say "everyone's a winner" is generous.

If this was an arm's length transaction with a less connected purchaser I could justify the differential with the Washington fee much more easily. Put it this way, I'd much rather have Washington in our squad given a choice between the two of them (ignoring any emotional attachment to Nass) and I think Washington has got more potential to establish himself at Championship level. I still think Nasser is a lightweight proposition for that division. I also felt we could find ourselves in a mismatch situation as soon as Clough was reappointed.
So on paper I'm not bothered, but there's something about it being JFH and the fact he has essentially insider knowledge of our club's situation that leaves a level of discomfort.
As an aside not exclusively related to this subject by any means, when JFH left I thought I'd look out for QPR's results and hope he did well. For one reason or another the less reasonable side of me soon secretly enjoyed their winless run, and I'm now awaiting the inevitable disquiet from their fanbase (whenever it comes) with a certain anticipation!

If you look at the fees we think the two players went for, just ask yourself is Connor Washington worth four Nassers?
I don't think so...reckon we've been done?

An excellent deal for both sides. A largely unproven player with flashes of brilliance.

I haven't commented until now but for what its worth I think that the fee is about half what it should have been. However, whatever I feel about the deal I have to balance it up with knowing that Ben Robinson is dealing with this deal and I am sure he will have got the best deal possible for the club. So overall I am not too concerned. I wish Nasser well, he has given us some fantastic memories(Last minute winner v Southend being one!) he is ambitious and he will have increased his earnings vastly. Whether we have time in this transfer window is another matter but again I'm sure Ben and Nigel know what they are doing. It just boils down to trusting those who are running our club and to be honest they have a very good track record.

It's not very often I come up with them but after the game yesterday I had it on me which led to a moment of clarity! I should point out that in no way am I having a go at Ben or the people who would've been involved in this transfer at our end. I just think that we've had to take what we've been given. There's a chasm between us and the likes of Peterborough and Wigan in terms of transfers and I think we'll see that demonstrated between now and tomorrow night's deadline. I've said before that the promotion places will be decided between those who can flex their financial muscles and strengthen most effectively and I've seen nothing to change my mind.

If you look at the fees we think the two players went for, just ask yourself is Connor Washington worth four Nassers? I don't think so...reckon we've been done? There's so much more to it than a straight fee vs fee (actually rumoured fee vs rumoured fee in this case) comparison though. Just in this window, is Jonjo Shelvey (£12m) three times the player Charlie Austin (£4m) is? I'd say absolutely not, but if Newcastle stay up it'll be worth having paid the multiple. QPR needed to replace Austin and they've invested an amount of money in securing someone who might start to fill his boots. QPR were also prepared to pay £X for El Khayati and our club have decided that's worthwhile to us and gone ahead with it. It also doesn't mean (if it is £350k) that QPR have been done because Jamie Vardy only cost Leicester 2 or 3 times that and his Premier League goals are worth a higher value to Leicester than 2 or 3 times the value to QPR of Nasser warming the Loftus Road substitutes' bench.

IMO. Nasser went the day JFH went and couldn't wait to get away, JFH has watched the situation and waited to swoop, his timing was spot on.Garner admitted Nassers head wasn't in the right place. We should be pleased we got any fee IMO but I think we have been done.

As I mentioned on one of the threads or on Facebook, we don't what (if anything) was in either player's (Washington and Khayati) respective contract. There may have been release fees, fees linked to wages or whatever. Also we don't know for sure the fee obtained. Sure, I think what is being quoted is a low fee, but it is still, by a long way, our record fee and we got him for free. If only Stefan Maletic had been as good.
JFH - signed some gems - signed some duffers c'est la vie.

I am quite surprised at the value and level some are suddenly putting Nasser at. He's a good player but in most football circles he is still an unknown talent. Football people have been following Conor Washington since he was a boy so they have a pre-determined set value for him, and following Nasser for less than a year. Comparisons are daft. And where is the talk of financial concern in the club and approaching FFP limits coming from? One minute it's potential censored work, the next it a moment of clarity? I vote for censored work. We haven't paid fees for hardly any players ever and Ben has said we have the lowest payroll in the league, gates are up, TV revenue is up, we're in for a TV windfall starting next season, 2 games on Sky coming up. The club is being run very well. But if a player has an opportunity to progress in the level of football they play at and to increase their wages substantially I have to wish them well.
As for being done, thats nonsense. We took the best offer. QPR are trying to balance their books, sold Austin for a reported £4M, bought Washington for a reported £2.5M. Jimmy may have been given another £500K to bring in a goalkeeper and a winger and they are £1M quids in. It's a business.

Touching on Funky's point, the chap cost nowt and 12 months later we pocket £350k for a 26+ year old after playing 40 odd games. I don't recall Albions actual annual turn over, but I think the transfer fee will equate to 15% ish. For QPR this is going to be a punt and nobody else has put money on the table. Maybe JFH does know Albion's internal financial situation and the money is well received.
I hope Nasser does well, incredible journey for him from 3rd tier Dutch football to the championship. A rare talent for L1 being able to beat a player more often than not, OK the decision making after that could have been better. Also the way we play at the moment his defensive duties could have been better, can't head a ball and he could disappear from some games. Clough tends to like his dependable 100% chaps. At another club, maybe the fee would have been higher, but once Nasser's head was turned maybe the fee isn't so bad after all.
We lost McDonald, our highest scorer and best player at the time in a similar way, Albion still managed. We have much more important players in our squad which I would be more worried about losing. Let's hope Mason Steps up.

I agree with most of that, but take Washington out of the equation and look at the fees for top League One players, laying at the top League One teams over the past few seasons (you would agree both thise points apply?) and the fee does look light. However, as I say we don't know everything.

I base my earlier comment on the fact that the final fee (if true) is almost a third of the figures initially discussed and no one's daft enough to believe journalist's talk on "expected" fees but I stand by it being a few quid light?
£500K would have pleased most folk I think but there we go...that's what this forum is about...opinions!

I don't think his decision making was that bad either - he is a special talent that can turn a game in just a few seconds. For me the missing link with Nasser was his confidence and belief - getting his head right and he may well do that better with JFH. I just hope we did get a sell on clause. Would love to see Nigel given the chance to add a quality replacement with some of the proceeds. In Nigel and Ben we have people who we know will always be doing their absolute best for Burton Albion.

Don't get me wrong Mikeyboy, I like Nasser, I'm just trying to put a different perspective out there. Whatever the fee, we must have got market value. Maybe JFH has sat and waited until now to see what the interest is in Nasser before putting a cheeky offer in. The club must have been "happy" to accept it. Compared to our annual turn over £350k is alot of cash. At the end of the day there must be some limiting factors with Nasser or we would have lots of offers on the table and the transfer price gone up accordingly.
Your correct, for L1 he is a rare talent that he can beat players and turn a game. I worry that it will be something we may miss in the run in and Albion become a little predictable with limiting alternative impact players. For his decision making I was referring to the times he got into good positions (which was a few and testament to his ability in the first place) but wouldn't pull the trigger, taking extra touches and losing the opportunity. Maybe that was confidence!
He won't be easy to replace since these kind of players at L1 / L2 level tend to be rare. But a fee which was acceptable to all parties has been agreed and we move on.
