Brazil are bunch of cheating little babies. New rules needed. Anyone making a gesture intended to persuade the ref to issue a card should be yellow carded themselves. Anyone rolling around in agony after being brushed against gets a big pink plaster with a teddy bear on it to wear for the rest of the game. Any combination of pink plaster and card waving gets an instant red, 5 match ban and a course on hardening the "I've just used a rather silly word and been auto-edited" up you soft Brazillian censored.word. Couldn't agree more, I thought they were a disgrace tonight against Colombia (Luis free kick apart), dirty tactic to kick James Rodriguez any time they could, diving, falling over, feigning injury and generally conning the referee at any opportunity. I'm not the Germans greatest fan but I doubt Brazil will get away with it against them, they have some hardened experienced professionals in the team and are a wise bunch who I think will handle the pressure and deal with the Brazilians. I don't expect too much diving, feigning injury or falling over from them because the Germans will have tackled them properly and either knocked them over through strength, or really tackled them so they really are injured. In some ways tactically they reminded me of a few Northern Premier league sides from many years ago. Looking at the above criteria tonights ref would have had to send off a few of them, run out of pink plasters with teddy bears on, infact the game would have been abandoned and the said course would have been over subscribed ! So grudgingly I hope the Germans beat them, I hope Costa Rica beat the diving Dutch and beat Germany in the final. My money is on the Germans mind !

What a difference a day makes. From the inspiring play of Bel-USA to the disheartening play of Bra-Col. Brasil couldn't compete whith Columbia so their tactic was to play dirty, foul early and often and at every opportunity. Scolari is to blame for that poor display of sportsmanship, and he is to blame for Neymars' injury. Columbia became increasingly frustrated at the Brasillian hatchet men and Zuniga took matters into his own hands. I'm not condoning what Zuniga did by any means, both teams were a disgrace.
Come on Belgium....

If the game had a proper ref he would have realised that Brazils tactic was to break up the play by any means they could every time Colombia tried to open the game up with passing. The ref was massively to blame for not realising what was happening, never mind FIFA have who they want in the semi-final. I have no sympathy for Schollari and Brazil who set out to kick Rodriguez out of the game and ended up losing their star man through injury and captain through suspension. Tough luck.

Howard Webb would be the ideal candidate, if my memory serves me right didn't he ref the game against Chile and make a fine job of it ?

Maybe he didn't give any free kicks in close proximity to the goal. He certainly used it in his previous game.

The 4 1/4 finals, first was a boring display by both teams, 2nd was a backstreet violent street gang brawl, and the last 2 were tactical but decent games to watch with some good displays of fairplay and one quite risque keeper supersub!
The referees got all the blame for the violant brawl match, but no credit for the other three....go figure.

Personally I thought the referee of the Holland/Costa Rica game was very good, the ref from the Germany/France game good, the ref from the Argentina/Belgium game average and the ref from the Brazil/Colombia game clueless. For the semi-finals and finals we need referees who have strong character and be able to read what is actually taking place in the game, have the strength to clamp down on dirty tactics and then allow the game to flow. I can't say I am confident of FIFA making the correct decisions.

For what it is worth, I think overall the refereeing has been quite good at the World Cup, they have by and large let the players get on with it, we have not seen games ruined by by a glut of yellow and red cards for insignificant misdemeanors. The have been a few notable mistakes but hey refs make mistakes, as do players and managers. The f in the Brazil Columbia match had a 'mare, wasn't helped by persistent fouling by the Brazilians, but the ref missed his job and he should not be used again.
GLT has worked, is it worth the investment? Well probably (ask Frank Lampard).
The disappearing spray has been very effective and I cannot see why this wouldn't be introduced forthwith into the English leagues. I have not seen any sensible argument against its use.

The players are accountable for the game and what happens in it. The fantastic Belgium-USA match was not down to a good referee and the Brasil-Columbia match was not down to a bad referee. FIFA picked a liniment referee for Brasil-Columbia because they knew what was going to happen and with a card-happy ref the game would 'probably' have been abandoned or at the very least Brasil would have had 5-6 players banned from the semifinal. We can only imagine what the media would be saying them.

Would have to agree funky about the GLT, it has worked well and the disappearing foam spray at free kicks(league 2 refs would need a couple on cans a game), it would be a useful tool for referees. Peacock, I understand where you are coming from, the managers are just as responsible as the players, I know refs make mistakes. USA V Belgium was played in the right spirit and a good ref allowed the game to flow. A strong charactered ref in the Brazil v Colombia game would have realised what was happening and stamped down on it early, it would have been Brazils misfortune if they had lost 5/6 players for the semi-final through the own dirty tactics, no one else's, but I think you are correct in saying FIFA picked a lenient referee and for the reason you say. If you add it all up I don't think that is very satisfactory and football is the loser.

GLT was used once in this WC, for the 2nd goal of France 3-0 Honduras. That's a lot of money being spent on one goal, thought one day I'm sure it will resolve an important goal. But by then the price will be even higher, and for me at least there are a lot more serious issues that need resolving. There's no going back now though.
The loser is indeed football. I'm fairly sure the referee in the Brasil-Columbia game knew what was happening, the thing is how different referees (ie: humans) deal with situations. But whichever slow-motion replay of the events we watch, after it's all added up and the books balanced, the managers and players are responsible for what happens on the pitch.

The Costa Rica goal against Italy was also awarded by GLT (as you well know!) that was a 1-0 game. A pretty important goal I would say. So that is two so far, it has also not given other close calls which may have been given by referees and linesmen making a mistake and thinking the ball was over when it wasn't.

I, as well as anyone watching that game, knew immediately that was a goal. Only after the Italians complained was the GLT shown to prove them wrong. This photo is when the ball touches down. In this video: 10 sec ref points to centre 23 sec he checks his GLT gizmo 35 sec CR manager Pinto says watch the replay He knew it was in from 60 yards away at ground level www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xINvesKE9gAnyway, Howard isn't doing the Ger-Bra match, mayve saving him for the final? Although I thought the Australian referee was very good every time I saw him so wouldn't be surprised if he gets the final... www.fifa.com/worldcup/news/y=2014/m=7/news=referee-designation-for-match-61-2401154.html

Got to be honest and say I thought GLT had been used in a few games and I like it because you can't argue with it and it takes away human error. It would have made a massive difference in the last World cup regarding the Frank Lampard goal that never was as it would have completely changed the game. Just using that as an example. I think Brazil will get a lenient ref for the Germany semi-final as FIFA want them in the final. I hope the Germans produce a disciplined performance and beat them and I don't care who wins the other just as long as the game is allowed to flow.

The ref got a signal within a second of the ball going over the line and he gave the goal. No arguments, no checking of a gizmo at 23 sec. Goal within a second. That is all. Acknowledge you are wrong and move on.

Bad day for me that was, stuck in a pub in Conway, North Wales with a load of Germans fans and Welsh fans who didn't want us to win either ! I threw my England shirt at the Germans in a tantrum and have never owned one since. Can't say I am proud of how I behaved that day !

Terraceman, I agree GLT was used several times (both when it is over the line 'Goal" and not over "No Goal" show inside the ball image) for the pundits to point out to the viewing public how/that it works. But I'm fairly sure it was only used once to decide a goal or no goal decision. And some believe even that was for FIFA to showcase the product, and to justify the cost. No question it would have resolved Frankies' goal in 2010, but my point is is the expense worth it when there are so many other more serious issues (racism for one) that need to be addressed. the referee for tomorrow is The Mexican guy who did the Uraguay-Italy match...I wonder if he'll let a Brasillian chomp on a German sausage? Funky, don't be so grumpy. I know how GLT works and that it works. If you pay attention you will know that I have repeatedly said that I feel it is not really necessary considering the expense behind it, and the number of times it is used, considering the other problems that need fixing. I will admit that you are out of order saying that I "pigheadedly refuse to acknowledge that it works." I have NEVER said that, I'll await the apology. I have said the German system being used has been well documented as being error prone during development and testing. But we do have to keep in mind that these gizmos, like speed cameras, are man made and as such are prone to imperfection. Just wondering, do you think that GLT is flawless and can never be wrong? I've told you before on FB that the ball was 8" over the line, see the photo above where it hits the ground. Like you said on FB the GLT image was taken as the ball was moving down towards the ground, at that point all that's needed is yes or no, not by how much. As for the referee not knowing that was a goal and being told by GLT that is was, I do not believe that you know what the referees thought process was. if you can prove that I'll move on. Until then just let it go.
