In the event he stays we really should get on some kind of contract with compensation built in
He's just too easy a target without it imo
I realise it's not the chairman's way but there's money to be made to help the club replace should he go and I can't see us ever sacking rowett
Plus it will put a few clubs off
As it stands it's like he will be on the shortlist for nearly every club championship and below who needs a manager
He will have 5 or 6 interviews a season!!

Why would Gary want to sign a contract now? It ain't going to happen. This system has drawbacks but generally serves us well. It could mean some more difficult periods if he stays, but if the Birmingham job came up as we expected this situation was always on the cards. If Gary does go, the job at Burton is very attractive to upcoming managers to start their career. The non contract protects the club in the early days, and the new manager knows he can do his job without interference, and also not be sacked at the first sign of difficulty. If Owen Coyle has become the new favourite it may be because Birmingham don't want GR's entourage, which I believe would be very important to him. Just a guess on my part.

Reason not to give a contract though is if you are worried you may not want to keep the manager
3 year contract on current wages gives club and manager security
There can be very few if any clubs in the top four leagues with managers without contracts and we want to keep ours more than most
It 100 per cent works when trying out a manager but once proven like rowett imo its time to make formal
What if rowett said if you want me to stay I will need a 3 year contract. Ben should snap his hand off
Build in guaranteed pay rises for success etc

Really fed up of saying this but there may well be an agreement between two gentlemen that does not need writing down. That is the way the Chairman has done things in the past it has served us well. When Clough left, I am sure 'as part of the agreement' there was compensation by way of a number (4 I think) of guaranteed Rams pre season matches at the Pirelli. That was 'part of the agreement' I have no idea what else was included.
Don't judge Burton Albion. By the way other clubs run things. They generally get it wrong.

It gives me a bit of hope Rowett gone back to favourite at evens with skybet but as you say 5/2 and also 2/1 second favourite with other bookies. It looked all over yesterday but at least it's a bit of a battle now. I think our season depends on this going our way. Would be a real boost to keep him.

I think it would be foolish to take the odds on managerial markets as being meaningful indicators of what is likely to happen.
There is comparatively little money wagered in these markets, so almost all bets placed will affect the odds, hence they can swing around quite a bit. So the odds as they stand more likely reflect the gut feeling of the few punters betting, rather than anyone holding any inside info.
Of course, the odds may eventually be correct, but in a market where there appears to be only 3 options, it isn't that difficult to end up being correct!

I take your point on the betting market on managers
But it's one of the few things you can bet on in sport where inside information can help you
As such the bookies limit how much you can place on these type of bets
A few years ago I knew a final shortlist of 3 for a managers job when they were all big odds
12/1, 25/1 and 16/1 (they varied a bit across the bookies)
I won over 8k after spreading my bets on all 3
Had to bet with about 7 different bookies to get my money on. Most anyone let me bet at any one time was 100.
I would have won more had they not limited my bets
I'm confident Phelan, Rowett and Coyle have all been interviewed at least based on the odds.
Only explanation for Coyles odds coming in bearing in mind he'd been written off the day before is that he had an interview yesterday
Friends and family of the managers interviewed and those doing the interviewing do get to know who is in the frame at least and they place bets as a result
It's when they suspend the betting full stop you can normally be sure a decision is made as someone in the know will pile as much money as they can on the winner
Dangerous bets to take for bookies based on the fact at some stage the winner is known whilst they are still taking bets
We aren't there yet

Think we can cross both of Birmingham's caretaker managers off the list. 3 nil down at home and a man sent off already. They will want to appoint someone new early next week after today.

I see Birmingham are doing their best to make the job an unattractive proposition for Rowett

Birmingham don't need a long term plan they need a short term fix until they get new owners
I don't think rowett and his back room team is the answer to a short term fix

He's going
1/4 now with skybet
People don't bet money on him getting the job when he's already such low odds without knowing something
Coyles 5/1 and so is Phelan
Someone's ITK
Nobody's betting on the other two
