It is true we usually have one of the lower budgets in the division, but that isn't the be all end all.
We won League Two with a small budget and then got promoted from League One on what would've been likely a bottom third budget. In the Championship first season, we stayed up despite Newcastle probably having certain players on very similar a week to our entire budget.
If you play the right way, create a squad of the right players, with the right attitude, anything is possible.
Unfortunately in the last few seasons, we've had completely the wrong attitude, style and wasted money on players that we've either barely played or brought in despite them not fitting into the formation we play (Stockton, Keillor-Dunn etc).
We've gone back to 'plucky/little' Burton Albion where we are of our own doing going into games scared of the opposition, and setting up like we are playing a prime Barcelona every week. 3 or 4 plus seasons ago, we had the confidence to go into games thinking we could have a go at anyone, and beat them, even on their own turf. Where did it all go wrong, because that Burton Albion is well and truly dead.

Have I got it all wrong? or did Gary Rowett have something to do with building the squad that got us into the championship?

Have I got it all wrong? or did Gary Rowett have something to do with building the squad that got us into the championship? He was certainly a very large influence on it. He was probably responsible for 80/90% of how good we were. Jimmy obviously inherited a very good squad, and improved us slightly with a couple of flair players (Duffy/El Khayati), but obviously also made a number of daft signings who barely ever played as well (Joachim/Maletic etc).

I guess that Kevin Summerfield was in there somewhere as well.

Some seem to attribute a lot of the recruitment back then to Kevin Summerfield.... Rightly or wrongly I don't know.... Clough and Taylor? Lennon and McCartney? Hamilton and Mercedes?

Kevin Summerfield certainly had a significant role in recommending targets. Lucas Akins, Robbie Weir, had both been at Tranmere Rovers at the same time as Summers and both Ian Sharps and Shane Cansdell-Sherriff also had links to Tranmere, I think, at a time when Summers had been at Prenton Park. I think there may have been one or two others as well. In terms of the team that got promoted to the Championship, I always refer to the fact that eight of the starting eleven at Doncaster on that final day were Gary Rowett signings (or given debuts by GR), Two were signed by Jimmy and the only one to be signed by Nigel Clough, as I recall, was Hamza Choudhury.

For me Summerfield and S.Clough were worth their weight in gold.

A good manager>Money Good manager can bring better style of play, better players, better results and better crowds thus better revenue. Not saying a good manager can't go t*ts up too but it's about time we stopped taking the cheap option

Michael Duff has been appointed Huddersfield manager, interesting to note on their article it says “Details of Michael’s coaching staff will be confirmed in due course”
Whether Paterson join him or not is just a waiting game now I suppose

Hopefully he will be asked to join Huddersfield ,I'm sure they will offer him more money than us.

Odds on I'd say MP will join Duff? Perhaps why the retained list hasn't been announced yet?
