To be fair to Mr Kettle he was good the last match he referred Burton in, Southend earlier in the season.
He does blow hot and cold though.

Why was it left until 10.45 to call the game off? it has been obvious for a couple of days what was in store weather wise. As of yesterday afternoon people anywhere north west of Leeds were being advised not to make journeys unless necessary. I had some accommodation booked up that area for tonight and they phoned yesterday afternoon to say that roads were being closed nearby and we may not be able to get to them. was the ref waiting incase there was a sudden heatwave? Its a shame it would have been a great game with a big crowd. Heard a rumour that referees were encouraged to try and not be a grinch this festive season by postponing games early thus robbing some of the opportunity to have a go at them for doing their job correctly. It is odd though that he made it to the ground before 10am even though the roads were seemingly closed? Were the reindeer helping?

Looking at some of the pictures from Hebden Bridge and Mythomroyd, I reckon we should be thankful really. Can't imagine much worse that being flooded out of your own home, as for Mr Kettle, I reckon he probably did his job impeccably today. Rock and hard place for referees with 18000 expected you can imagine Bradford would have wanted to play (unlike previous occasions). I wonder if our team travelled up Christmas Day?

Everything was done by the book....plus it seems they wanted to play as they had the pitch covered. "Speaking about the postponement, City's Facilities Manager David Dowse said: "I rang the referee (Trevor Kettle) at 6:55am to tell him we were going to have concerns. "Burton were due to travel at 10:45am and their supporters at 11:30am. "The referee first had a look (at the pitch) at about 10:00 - 10:15am and the ball wasn't moving. "There was a little chink of light with the weather forecast for later but that was too little, too late. "The pitch wasn't playable, and we also had to consider supporters who would be travelling in from areas where there had been flooding." (ii) A Referee shall whenever possible examine the ground and decide as to its fitness for play in sufficient time to save the expense of unnecessary journeys being incurred by Clubs. The pitch inspection must be made by the Match Referee or a Referee appointed by The Association who must immediately contact The Association with details of an inspection (and the Match Referee if relevant). (iii) Subject to this Rule, the Referee shall have the power to decide as to the fitness of the ground in all matches. (iv) The Referee must report to the ground 90 minutes before the time of kick-off. If necessary, the Home Club or The Association may, by notice, require the Referee to visit the ground more than 90 minutes before the time of kick-off any time during the season.

This was posted on the Bradford forum, made a bit of sense IMHO:
Are you not aware that a significant number of City's supporters live in the north of the district? I live in Baildon and couldn't have got to Valley Parade by any of the obvious routes because Otley Rd is flooded at Baildon Bridge. The most obvious alternative would be to go up to Yeadon and then down via Apperley Bridge but that's flooded too. So I'd have had to go north up to Eldwick and down through Gilstead to join the A650 along with numerous others, no doubt. At a time when the emergency services are up to their eyeballs do you really think the police would want thousands of City fans driving round the district trying to find the few remaining passable routes into the city centre, taking chances and getting stuck in localised road floods and causing massive traffic hold ups on the passable main roads, thereby preventing fire engines and ambulances getting to where they need to be? It's a football match - very low on the list of priorities in exceptially severe weather. And anyway, the pitch was unplayable.

It's sad that we weren't able to meet up with friends in the pub and then go to the game on the biggest football day of the year. However waking up in south Manchester it's much more sad to hear of our daughter's friends and in-laws to the north of the city who are at best trapped in their communities and at worse suffering personal hardship and loss of businesses. This morning the likes of Rochdale and Bury are our League One friends I feel.
