A tightly contested game, which I felt we just deserved the win. As I said last week we still put too many shots over the bar. I thought overall the ref had a decent game. Of the bookings today, only the one on McCrory was a poor one , just because he changed his mind when about to take a free kick. Timewasing? Ridiculous. It was a pity we lost Nasser early on, and he did appear to be subjected to so rough treatment. Agree, it was a tight game and either team could have sneaked a win. Re: Damo's booking in the 89th minute, I think if had been the other way round we would have been asking for a card under the circumstances. But we really don't have anything to complain about being TOTT after 12 games. BTW, the goal was given as an OG to Prosser. (Edit: watched the highlights, defo own goal). I thought the referee had a good game and I hope the moaners acknowledge that. Off to Walsall on sat. To go 6 points clear! COYB!

Thought it had 0-0 written all over it personally. It was only down to a wonderful piece of misfortune that the deadlock was broken. If we could be a bit more spontaneous and direct with our shooting we could give someone an absolute pasting. Shame it wasn't yesterday.
Unbelievably Kettle did have a decent game as others have already said although I think he was duped by one of the most ridiculous examples of delayed diving I've ever seen in the first half and I think the precedent he set by booking Weir wasn't followed up on by not booking Southend for their numerous fouls in the second half.
I fully expected Brown to say they were the better team. He would have said it if we'd have won 5-0. He won't give us any credit whatsoever simply because he doesn't like the fact that he's never been able to get one over on a club he clearly doesn't like. Indicative of him as a person and the club in general, I'm afraid. A relic from the old boy's network that probably believes that we have no place in football and the likes of Grimsby and Wrexham should be given a free pass back into the league because they have more supporters. He's basically a diet Steve Evans.

I have to say Trevor Kettle reffed the game well yesterday and my pre match worries unnecessary. Without being spectacular we made sure we ground out another victory. A great attribute that we have developed over the last couple of seasons and required by all successful teams. 11 games in, 8 wins and 25 points on the board. A really big game at the Bescot next Saturday, maybe a victory there will really make people think Albion can achieve the impossible. Its a short journey of 30 odd miles with a train station outside the ground so lets encourage as many as possible to get there, I have 5 with me !

Ben Coker - frustrated by another defeat at Burton Albion
SOUTHEND United left-back Ben Coker revealed his hatred of playing at Burton Albion following Saturday’s 1-0 defeat against the Brewers.
Blues have now been beaten on their last three visits to the Pirelli Stadium.
And Coker, the Shrimpers’ best performer on the day, is sick of suffering setbacks against the League One leaders.
“I actually hate coming here because we never seem to win,” said the defender.
“It was a very disappointing result but I thought we played some good stuff in the first half.
“The goal was disappointing timing just after half-time and how it went in as well.
“But we have to pick ourselves up and go again now.”
The Shrimpers were sunk by a 51st minute own goal from centre-back Luke Prosser.
However, Coker is sure his team-mate will bounce back strongly from the setback.
“Luke tried to clear it and it’s come off his leg,” said the 25-year-old.
“It’s not gone the way he wanted but since he’s come in he’s been doing really well for us.
“It’s one of those things but he’ll certainly bounce back from this and we all need to do the same.”
The Shrimpers had triumphed in their previous three games before Saturday’s setback.
But the closeness of the contest against Burton again convinced Coker that Blues have what it takes to match the top teams in League One.
“We know we can mix it with the best teams in this league,” said the left-back.
“We have belief in the camp but we just need that bit of experience to finish off teams.

Good player Coker...
You know for all the we hate Southend and Brown etc, I did think they were the better team first half and there wasn't much in it 2nd half, apart from that great start first 20 mins. It is a compliment really that they feel hard done to but think they will be up there if they have a good performance against us.

It is nice to know that we are another team's bogey team. That is what made the circumstances of the goal even sweeter! Sitting where I do I got a marvellous view of Mr Brown's antics. He spent quite a lot of time pointing out things to the forth official . With regards to Mr Kettle the thing that amused me was that he kept on telling players off for taking drinks during the game. Ironic really when his name is Kettle.

Press thread is now complete.. here is what Southend's local rag had to say about the match... take note of my highlighted section at the end...! Southend United manager Phil Brown: Burton Albion were lucky to beat us SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown labelled Burton Albion as lucky winners following his side’s 1-0 defeat at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday. Luke Prosser’s second half own goal condemned the Shrimpers to their first reverse of the season on the road. And Brown felt the Brewers were fortunate to have come out on top. “I certainly wouldn’t mind having a slice of Burton’s luck because I honestly feel as though the best team lost here,” said the 56-year-old. “It was a good away performance from us and we really threw the kitchen sink at them. “Joe Pigott and David Mooney both had clear cut chances to score and David had one in the first half as well. “But to be denied a point or three by a scuffed shot which is squirming wide until it hits one of my defenders is disappointing and pretty tough to take.” The defeat saw the Shrimpers slip down to 11th in the League One table. And Brown insisted a slow start to the second half and the difference between the two team’s strikers ultimately led to his side returning home empty handed. “We didn’t come out of the traps at the start of the second half and that’s cost us the game in the end,” said the Blues boss. “In Stuart Beavon, Burton also have someone who makes a difference up top. “For me he was the best striker in League Two last year and he’s a real handful. “He can hold the ball up and when it goes up to him it sticks. “But when it went up to our two strikers it wasn’t as solid and we didn’t have that guaranteed possession.” Burton, who were promoted alongside Blues from League Two last season, were therefore able to continue their superb start to the new campaign. And Brown was full of praise for their resilience. “Burton find a way to win games and they’ve done that here against us,” said the Shrimpers chief. “There’s a reason why they’re top and we’re not and it’s down to game management which is something we need to work on.”
