I posted that attendance number, and comment, because I was so down-hearted about how SMALL that total number was when I saw it. Taking 1,100 Boro fans says that only 2,300 Burton fans could find the way to the Perelli to see a quality Championship side play BAFC. 2,300 is IMO pathetic for the quality on display tonight. /rant off I think the ridiculous price hike on the day as I think Funky originally commented on played a big part. Especially on a weeknight for those who commute to work and couldn't be sure of being able to make it. Nobody is going to pay almost double what everyone else has paid on the night. I moaned when they announced the early bird league prices. I sometimes don't know if I can make a game until the day with not living locally and working friday, saturday nights. If the price was £19 for everyone I probably wouldn't mind paying that for league one football, the only problem would be the knowledge that I'm paying more than most others. And that's just when it's only £2 more! I reckon a few would've tried to buy pregame saturday too and been told they couldn't so they wouldn't have bothered. Think the club has lost themselves a fair bit of money tonight. Could easily see an extra 1000 coming to the game if it was £10 on the day also. That's a lot of money for a club of our size to turn away. Tuesday nights are fine for me though and I did get my ticket in advance but I wasn't at all surprised by the low attendance. Decent gutsy hard working display against a very good side who we just couldn't hold off for long enough. Not sure we matched them though, maybe for the first half an hour but then it was all them. If it wasn't for some dreadful finishing by them I think they would've had the game well and truly wrapped up in 90 mins.

We were like the little team taking a drubbing for 60 minutes and unfortunately just couldn't hold on until the 90 (as is the way). From our perspective though given it was a team at 50% strength vs a top championship team, we did very well. I'd like to think it's a level we can eventually reach! Attendance low for many reasons... - holiday season so everyone is away - week night so many don't go due to work, especially any of our fans who travel a while to see us - Capital one cup isn't too glamorous - Price on the night (though I didn't mind paying £10 for 120 mins football).

Really though 2300 if accurate is a good number for us, esp. On a Tuesday in the summer hols. The fact remains that having 6 'bigger' clubs nearby has taken a lot of local support to them. The focus needs to on youth and in hindsight maybe kids for a quid would have worked last night, but who knows. When we are in a battle for promotion or to win the league those supporters of other teams will come along because they love the game.
Or perhaps Ben needs to bankrupt us (joking obviously) and perhaps the fear of losing our club would bring people out. Last night at Hereford FC vs Coleshill, 5 tiers below league, there were 2700+ fans, 32 from Coleshill.

Jimmy did actually acknowledge the Boro fans but not until the match had finished. After he'd shook hands with the Boro management, whilst the players were walking off, he walked onto the pitch and applauded their fans in both the East terrace and the seats.
In my view he got it spot on. Completely focused on Burton before and during the game, and then once completed acknowledging the Boro fans who had repeatedly chanted his name

Attendances generally are poor. I thought Saturday's was poor 800 from Peterborough suggesting around 2500 Burton. We don't seem to be picking up many over all these successful league football years. You can't bemoan the clubs pricing. It's pretty fair.

I thought it was a good performance last night, and the lads can hold their heads high. I thought the attendance wasn't bad for the League Cup, and the massive difference in price if you wanted to make your mind up on the day to attend. This was surely enough to put anyone off. I was expecting well below 3000. We made 8 changes from Saturday, and still competed very well against a top class Championship club. You can't help but feel our team is looking very strong overall.

I was surprised and disappointed to read from some that he never acknowledged them. That would be be so unlike him, he is a true gentleman and exudes respect for the game and all involved in it.

The speakers in the North Stand were a bit of a fail last night... They worked through the entirety of the announcement pre-match but when it switched back to the music 5/10 mins before the players came out, they were either breaking up, or completely off...
Sure it's been discussed before but figured I'd post anyway in case there's someone who can do something about it!

I thought it was a wonderfully entertaining game last night. I don't believe the criticism that we sat back too much is fair as if we had have actually gone at them a bit more then their 33 shots on the night would've been more like 50 and we'd have been looking at a humiliating scoreline. Mousinho said before this season had even started that our supporters were going to have to get used to the opposition having more of the ball and seeing us soak up pressure and that's exactly what we saw last night. Middlesbrough were just too quick and too good for us ultimately. You only have to look at the quality in their team. Kalas is a young Czech Rep. international right back on loan from Chelsea, Stuani was playing for Uruguay in the World Cup last year and has been plying his trade in La Liga for a good chunk of his career, Stephens, Gibson and Reach all England youth internationals with bright futures...I think they really were a cut above anyone we've played for quite some time. It was only a tremendously disciplined performance from a much changed Brewers team that absolutely worked their arses off for 120 minutes that kept the score down. That and, as has been said, woeful finishing.
Just one thing about the ticket prices. I do agree that the "on the day" hike was too much but I seriously doubt we'd have put an extra 1000 on the gate had it been £10 right up until kick off. It was £10 on the turnstile last season vs. Wigan and there were less than 2000 home supporters at the Pirelli that night. League cup isn't a draw and the people of Burton just aren't interested in the football club. Plain and simple.

I agree totally with Spence.
The gate was pretty good for a league cup tie and most people I know of, took advantage of the lower price.
I agree the hike was too much on the night but we all had fair warning and the choice is yours? Don't think it did a lot to keep people away who would have turned out on the night?
The performance was very good for what was a cobbled together team and I mean no disrespect by that comment. Those who played put in full effort in some cases, playing out of their usual positions and we ran Boro very close over 90 minutes.
Extra time killed us, against their higher technical ability and fitness but I have no criticism of the effort those players made to win the game.
It was interesting to see some of the fringe players and I have to say, I hope we don't pick up too many suspensions and injuries, as one or two of those out there last night who I felt were somewhat lacking in the quality required for League One but it is difficult to judge fully on just one cup performance...time will tell on that?
Overall...well done lads and let's move on to Shrewsbury, where three points are far more important than round three of the league cup!

Agree with most of that johnno with the exception of the lacking in quality of one or two of the fringe players. I thought almost without exception they performed admirably and I was reassured should we do get any injuries or suspensions, indeed one or two will be pushing for a staring place on Saturday, Matthews and palmer for instance. Realistically we were playing a top Championship team and only two of our '1st team' from Saturday played in similar positions. Onwards and upwards :-)

I felt that many of the fringe players did very well with Matty Palmer and Remi Matthews outstanding. I also felt that Calum Butcher looked impressive in the middle and Tom Naylor excellent at Right Back. Aurelian Joachim worked his socks off too. My only doubt was Calum Reilly who played within himself, was neat and tidy but I don't know how much he really wanted to win it.

Happy to see that O'Connor, Matty, Butcher and Reilly got a start. These, all, players need to be kept in the mix for when injuries and/or suspensions happen.

sorry if highlights have already been posted. Great cross from Matty for our goal, but oh dear...Shane, both goals... oh well, back to what is important, the league. www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZGNUDLxY8A
