Nice finish after Orsi’s shot was saved. Took a moment to look and slot it in

2-0 F/T. Attendance 1680.
On another note, Webster was seen with a protective boot on, so hopefully that isn't as bad as it looks.

I wish I had gone. Sounds like a totally wiped slate and a new philosophy. Long may it continue.

Not bad for a bunch of strangers. I'm finally glad to have seen them in action. Welcome to Burton Albion. As a friend of mine pointed out, the first five minutes were more enjoyable than the whole of last season.
You can't get too excited at pre-season friendlies but that was a very good start.
Highlights for me were:
1) Dylan Williams & Billy Bodin - though no one had a bad game. Congrats on MOM Mr Gilligan. 2) Halfway through the second half, we appeared to be playing TWO at the back, with the full backs playing very high up. Nice. 3) It was all very fluid. Who was playing the defensive midfielder role. Gilligan? Kegs? Who cares? It worked. 4) The midfield/attack was all fluid too. Apart from Orsi & (sub) Burrell, who played the No.9 role, everyone was everywhere - not in a headless chicken way. Bodin, Kalinauskas & Whitfield were chipping in with the attack but leaving no holes - how did that work? On paper, Dylan Williams was part of the defence. But on the grass (which looks like a carpet, by the way) it was completely different. 5) That move for the second goal was wonderful. It started with Crocombe then Vancooten and then very smoothly worked its way up the field and into the net.
It's exactly three months since that Fleetwood game.
I'm not daft: let's see if these same players repeat this on a wet December Tuesday at Peterborough.
But it's a good start.

All looked very comfortable and can see some of the patterns they’ve been training too. Considering the injury list too, exciting stuff

I had a big grin on my face for most of that match. It wasn't as if Port Vale didn't give us a game, but the confidence and movement on the ball, combined with resilience and resource when we had to re-group was just lovely to see. Great to see Gilligan have a great game in a battling role in front of the back 4 (although it was difficult to be certain we had a back anything) and my man of the match Kalinauskus is a great little player. Bodin, who appeared to roam around freely to great effect, is also quality, but to be honest, there wasn't a poor performance in a yellow shirt and deserved cup winners!

Quite simply the movement of the players absolutely bamboozled Vale a treat.
Bodin and Whitfield played off the striker, Orsi, but roamed about dropping off to get the ball from the back line too. Vale didn't know who was picking up who. Both were impressive.
Kalinauskas was left wing back but advanced with Williams then moving across to cover. He looked tidy and skillful and put a shift in too.
Midfield two of Gilligan and Chauke were constantly snapping away, but also offering for the ball and then passing it nicely.
Orsi has a bit of knowhow to win free kicks and doesn't give the centre half time to breathe, looks like he's got a good touch too.
Akoto is a big strong pacy lad who'll cause problems down the right. Godwin-Malife looked shaky on the ball early on then grew in to it. Williams looked comfortable and made a great run too.
We pressed well, then when we had it looked after it but tried to be attacking. A certain Mr Southgate could learn a thing or two.
Vancooten is a big lad but comfortable in the ball too, I suspect he'll play central in Sweeney's absence.
It was a great start, we probably need to be more clinical which hopefully will come. We also ran the risk a few times trying to overplay.
We had four balls go flat in the first half, it did feel very amateur and out of place in the new era.
The question of being able to do it on a wet and windy night at Blackpool will only be answered then, but from what I saw when we didn't have the ball, then I'm hopeful the answer is yes. We very much looked hungry to win it back, snapping away, closing down well, organisation was excellent.
Plus we are aiming for 2 players in every position, so if one ain't doing it.....
I'm not going to get carried away, but it's lovely to be able to enjoy my evening.
We have a coach with a plan, players onboard capable of actioning it and a pleasing on the eye style.
Exciting times!

I know it's only a pre season friendly etc. but for me there were some real good positive signs yesterday with virtually every player looking decent and most certainly a step up in quality from players we have seen in the last few years. A different style of play which was pleasing on the eye and some early signs of good relationships between some players. Amazing really for saying that it was the first time they had played a match together.
Not sure who they gave man of the match to but for me Dylan Williams looked a real talent starting on the left of a back three and then moving to wing back later in the game. Quick, sharp and good on the ball and was quicker than anything Vale had to offer and looked a class above. I know Vale didn't have all their new signings available(their fans already in meltdown mode on their forum which is good to see!) but we just looked a second quicker than them and whilst they were very rigid with players sticking to their positions we had some real good movement with players finding pockets of space and got us moving forward quickly.
Also interesting to see Gilligan and Chaulke start in the centre of midfield with both having excellent games. Amazing what a different coach with a different outlook can have on how players look. Kegs is actually like having a new player having been woefully under used last season when it was clear from very early on that he was a technically decent player albeit one not suited to a hoofball style of play. I think on yesterdays evidence he is somebody who should be in and around this new squad and for me if he started against Lincoln I wouldn't be worried.
There weren't many negatives at all other than a couple of times passes went astray which lead to them having a one on one first half and then second half around 60 minutes after we bought on Vancooten we got caught on the restart and it looked like they might have had a penalty(might have been a red card in a league game) but the ref gave it bang on the edge of the area with Max saving the free kick. They are little things that could change games and clearly need stamping out before the real stuff starts but other than that we were comfortable.
Overall i'm glad I went to the game and I feel very confident that on that evidence we have signed some decent players who look capable of playing at L1 level. I know Vale have gone down but they had some hardened pros playing yesterday and at times we gave them the runaround so whilst I know it's only a friendly it will have given everybody a boost in terms of how it went. Exciting times!!

Plenty of energy and urgency from the start yesterday. And they kept the tempo up, that’s what you’re changes/subs are for… Gilligan did a good job in midfield showing why he should have been included more in previous seasons, he does remind me of Quinn in a lot of his play. I think most have been mentioned in previous posts, Bodin and I thought the defender from Stevenage looked a player when he came on. Vale looked like us in pre season last year…

The important thing for me yesterday, is it proved that the ‘project’ introduced to us by the Nordic Football Group has some credibility and potential and the signings our recruitment team have brought in look half decent and could grow it be more than that. Having read some of the comments on the Stevenage Forum about our signing of Terence Vancooten for a cash record fee and particularly my own worries about paying another record to the American 3rd tier outfit South Georgia Tormenta for Nick Akoto, my fears were allayed to some extent with how they played yesterday and that we hadn’t necessarily payed over the odds. We looked to have made some good signings, particularly Dokes Godwin-Malife at the back, Dylan Williams, Tomas Kalinauskas, Danilo Orsi and especially Billy Bodin, who looked an exceptional striker. Which gives us the added bonus of being a threat up front and being able to score a goal again. With so much more to come in yet as well.

Kegs and Gilly the 2 stand outs. Keggy I value your opinion. What you seen do you think that by March 2025 this squad of players are going to have a good chance of being safe from relegation?
