I'm sure there's a few old'uns on here that remember the Barker-Round days.... 149 goals in 199 games.... Scoring in 3 games out of 4... ... how we wish we had a goal scorer of his ability today... eh?
I thought about putting something on the former players thread or the those we have lost thread but as a Brewers legend I decided the passing of a legend should be marked with its own thread... Is Stan Round in our Hall of Fame thing...anyone know?

So sad to hear that everard. Stan was playing the very first time I went to watch Albion and a true legend, who will never be forgotten. I do wish we had seen him again at the Pirelli in recent years. His partnership with Richie Barker was incredible as they both were scoring legends but in the same team. His achievements will never be repeated, 59 goals in 56 appearances in 65/66. RIP Stan - you were part of Burton Albion folklore. That first team I saw was: Lines, Patrick, Sheppard, Jackson, Aston, Bate, Roby, Tait, Round, Barker, Jones.

What a club legend Stan Round was, I remember his partnership with Richie Barker in the good old days at Eton Park. He was brilliant and a gentleman too Rest in peace Stan and condolences to his family.

RIP Stan. Saw him score many of his goals including a double hatrick against Hinckley (cup match I think) in the middle sixties.

RIP Stan. A true Albion legend signed by Peter Taylor from Hinckley Athletic along with several others. Following his double hat trick against Hinckley in an 8-1 win I recall he scored 4 more in the following league game against Sittingbourne. I also saw him score a hat trick of penalties against Dover. Sadly missed the Southern League Cup Final against Weymouth due to injury.

Alas, I’ve only read about him (it’s not often these days that I’m one of the younger posters), but clearly a Brewers legend. I find it amazing that we still didn’t win the league with Barker and Round in the team - I could have a look in Rex Page’s book to find out why. RIP Stan.

Some good teams that year Ilson - Barnet, Hillingdon Borough, Bath City and ourselves. The 4 went up, we lost out for 2nd to Hillingdon on goal average, with Barnet as Champions. I remember going to the Barnet game about Easter time, with 5,600 in Eton Park and kids climbing the floodlights for a better view. I think it ended 0-0 and even Stan (or Richie) couldn’t get the goal to make us Champions. But a great effort under Alex Tait as we had lost the great Peter Taylor the previous Oct - off to form a partnership that became quite famous in its own right.

I'm not old enough to have seen Stan play, although my sister used to live on Barker Round Way, so I have some sort of connection!
it was only yesterday when I was reading the report that I put 2 and 2 together and realised that Steve Round is his son. really should have worked that out a long time ago. Steve has had a top career as a coach with premier league teams and England

Mikeyboy I was interested in your reference to the Barnet match in the sixties and in particular the attendance of 5600. I recalled that on the same night Arsenal had a lower attendance on the same night. Thinking my memory may be playing tricks I have just googled this and find that on 5th May 1966 they had an attendance of 4554 for a division one match against Leeds United. Who would have thought it? Like Bancroft I was unaware Steve Round was Stan's son but I note he was born in Burton in 1970.He did indeed start his career with Derby but after very few appearances was forced to retire with injury. He played briefly for Nuneaton before becoming a youth coach at Derby.

It is sad news to hear of Stan's passing ,I started supporting the Albion in 1962/63 as Stan and Richie Barker were starting to cause havoc to opposing defenders, they were good times with plenty of goals. As has been said Stan was a legend at the Albion. Thanks for the memories.RIP Stan.

Am I right in saying Stan Round and Richie Barker both passed the 40 goals Mark in the same season? I'm somebody will confirm or correct me? Oh for a partnership hitting them levels now.

I was privileged to see em playing together, just couldn't remember their goal tallies. One of the reasons we had more support them days, it's a fact, people will turn out to watch entertaining football.
