Putting a very firm line under this season, lets move on to the future and what may/may not happen over the next 3 or 4 months. I suspect much change again.
Current players under contract
Goalkeepers:
Ben Garratt
Defenders:
Deji Oshilaja Cameron Borthwick-Jackson Conor Shaughnessy Sam Hughes Frazer Blake-Tracy Williams Kokolo Ryan Leak Tom Hamer
Midfielders:
Terry Taylor Ciaran Gilligan Charlie Lakin Bryn Morris
Wingers/Strikers:
Jonny Smith Gassan Ahadme Louis Moult
Out of Contract
Callum Hawkins John Brayford (Offered terms) Michael Bostwick Michael Mancienne (Offered terms) Joe Powell (Offered terms) Danny Rowe Oumar Niasse Tom Hewlett Amadi-Holloway
Loanees:
Matej Kovar Harry Chapman Christian Saydee Jacob Maddox
What I want/expect to see happen to the squad:
Goalkeeper area:
- Ben Garratt (KEEP) for me is still very much the No1 keeper and a few dodgy games doesn't change that. - Hawkins (RELEASE), nearly 23 now and isn't good or tall enough, let him go to find first team football.
Defender area:
- John Brayford (NEW DEAL) - I think he's earned a new deal after a very good season, however with Mansfield's track record of offering silly long contracts for 30+ declining ex Burton players, let's see what happens... - Deji Oshilaja (KEEP) - A versatile defender, jack of all trades, master of none? Worth keeping but certainly needs to do better next season. - Cameron B-Jackson (SELL/UNSURE) - Probably controversial given he's improved a little recently, but he is an awful defender, and we need midfielders in midfield, common sense right? A Jimmy favourite though... - Conor Shaughnessy (KEEP) - One of our better defenders. - Sam Hughes (KEEP) - A good defender, but 100% needs to find form again and fast, since he's signed permanently he's looked half the player. - Frazer Blake-Tracy (SELL) - One of our worst signings in recent memory, slow, useless and looks like a non-league player, I hope we can find someone to take him off us. - Williams Kokolo (KEEP) - A raw talent, and good squad/backup option. - Ryan Leak (KEEP) - A quality player who hasn't done anything wrong, sadly Jimmy doesn't rate him, I suspect he will go and it will be our loss, a waste of talent. - Tom Hamer (KEEP) - Solid enough and fairly reliable, great fitness record, could draw a little interest in the summer. - Michael Bostwick (RELEASE) - Past it.
Midfield area
- Terry Taylor (KEEP) - Cracking midfielder, alas not in Jimmy's plans clearly. I think he might end up going. His problem being that he's a proper midfielder and we don't play them do we. - Ciaran Gilligan (KEEP) - Like Taylor he's a good young lad with a good future, but his appearances may end up being limited due to us playing defenders in midfield. - Charlie Lakin (SELL) - Doesn't seem to be in Jimmys plans, barely featured in the last 3rd of the season, probably for similar reasons as the above two midfielders. - Joe Powell (NEW DEAL) - Hope he stays but if I was him I'd be looking around first, with the dire football we play he's limiting his potential with us. - Michael Mancienne (RELEASE) - Unfortunately he's been offered a new deal but personally I'd be letting him go. Fingers crossed someone offers him something better. Old, slow, yellow card hungry donkey. - Bryn Morris (SELL) - I think he may sign permanently with Hartlepool, which is best for all parties as he isn't good enough for us. - Danny Rowe (RELEASE) - Never given a chance under Jimmy, ridiculous management, good luck to the lad.
Winger/Striker area
- Jonny Smith (KEEP) - Lively lad, hopefully we play some attacking stuff with wide men next season or I can see a season of struggle for him. - Gassan Ahadme (KEEP) - Slowly improving, not sure he'll ever be a long term option, but lets see how next season goes. - Louis Moult (SELL) - I honestly don't think he's up to this level anymore, the long term injuries have hit him hard and in his 10 or so appearances he's looked well off it and has faded out of the picture. - Oumar Niasse (KEEP) - I think he'd be a good lad to keep, but suspect he'll be looking elsewhere for one last payday now he's proven his fitness. - Amadi-Holloway (RELEASE) - Never ever good enough, goodbye. - Tom Hewlett (RELEASE).
Loanees situation:
- Matej Kovar (RE LOAN) - I think he's earned the opportunity of another loan with us, I would be going with the intention of Garratt as No1 though, and Kovar ready to step in if his form drops again. - Harry Chapman (LET GO) - A few have said they'd like him on a permanent, I'm not one of them, he's got no end product, and doesn't do enough. Doesn't fit our hoofball playing style, will perform better elsewhere. - Jacob Maddox (LET GO) - Terrible, a very poor signing by Jimmy. Hope we've seen the last of him, full time crock, part time footballer. - Christian Saydee (LET GO) - Can't criticize his workrate, but 0 goals in 18 games is quite horrific, missed some absolute sitters in his time. Suspect he'll end up Non-League.
What we need moving forward?
- A quality left back - A commanding central midfielder - A couple of wingers - A targetman striker/quick striker
If we get rid of the right players, play players in the positions they are supposed to be in, play a little more postively, not with 6 or 7 defenders on the pitch, we really don't need THAT many signings next season. 5 or 6 at best. We've got a good core of lads, Taylor, Leak, Hamer, Shaughnessy, Gilligan etc, use them properly!

I’d agree with most of that assessment but I’d offer terms to Chapman and continue to play him. I’d just like to say how on earth did Jacob Maddox get the nod over him yesterday? He is described on Google as the ‘Chelsea wonder kid’ and made appearances for England at U16, U17, U19 and U20 levels and is only 21 now. From what we have seen it just begs the question ‘How on earth did that happen’?

All I can assume with Maddox is that injuries have ruined him, and continue to do so, he just can't seem to stay fit.
As for Chapman, I think along with Powell we sometimes expect too much of them, especially given the style of football we play, we have a deep defensive back six/seven and then 3 exposed forward/wide men so it can be very hard for them to create and score. If we played a 4-4-2 or a 4-2-3-1 we'd likely see a completely different side to Harry. I just think unless Jimmy is intending to change his style next season then we wont see the best of him and he'll continue to struggle a bit.

To be honest i have been attending since 1969 and this season has been the least enjoyable in all that time for me. We were relegated from the Southern league Premier division in my first season and suffered a couple of other relegations after promotions but the entertainment value was better than this season. We may have stayed up reasonably comfortably but the negative line ups and tactics devoid of entertainment for the majority of the season was a real turn off for me. We have some decent players but playing 7 defenders in the side when we have perfectly decent midfielders available is not for me. I hope for a few new additions and a more positive attitude next season. I am not expecting that to happen though and will not renew my season ticket but will pick and choose my games. Partly due to work committments and partly due to the lack of entertainment on offer.

Looking at the contract position for the squad next year it's clear that we have a decent enough defensive base, obviously if Brayford signs then even better.
Goalkeeper: Garratt Clearly need another 2 in. If we can get a young released to push Garratt for first choice, or if we're happy with him as No.1 then an end of career experienced back up would do.
Full Back Options: Brayford (hopefully), Hamer, Kokolo. With Oshilaja as back up. I'm purposely ignoring CBJ as in my opinion he is not a defender. Don't get me started on FBT... So, ideally still need a quality left back or hope that Kokolo realises his potential.
Centre Defence: Hughes, Shaughnessy, Leak, Oshilaja, Brayford (?) Tall strong defence with a bit of back up too. So unless someone tall, quick and exceptional comes along, i think we are covered.
Central Midfield: Taylor, Gilligan, Lakin, Mancienne (?), Powell (?) Morris (unfortunately Hartlepool have sacked their manager) Looking very lightweight, need a good strong player in there to compete who can get around the pitch, so disappointed that MM has been offered another year. Powell for me does not offer enough offensively consistently enough to mitigate his obvious and awful defensive frailty. Lakin, 3 year contract for a player who even Jimmy doesn't seem to rate, part of me hopes that he gives him a chance pre-season to show what he can do, otherwise it's got to be a parting of ways. So also need a creative force, or at least a box to box midfielder with a bit of height, circa Irvine.
Wide Midfielders/Wingers: Smith I think we can all see why we struggled this year as we have no width to the side, Jonny will give some but naturally drifts inside too. Desperate need for some fast wingers who can provide width, crosses, an outlet to relieve pressure and to track back. A couple of early 20 year old Lucas's please. I don't want to see so called creative players like Chapman who if they don't create offer nothing. I want my wide players to put a shift in, no matter what.
Strikers: Ahadme, Moult Another position screaming out for reinforcement. Jury is still out on both, Moult needs games to show his quality and prove his fitness, Ahadme to enhance on his potential. We need another 2, whether 1 of those can cover the wide position as well to offer even more goal threat then even better. If Jimmy could pull another Jebbison out of the hat? But as always would prefer a permanent so we don't end up in Deadline day scrambles.
There's a solid basis there, just needs some weeding out, then some specific targets rather than last years sign who we can then realise we could get better.

So we've got 17 under contract, 7 more have been offered deals + 2 more academy lads so if they sign it'll take us up to 26. Seems a little heavy again and we need to be careful it doesn't spiral up towards nearly 40 again like last season.
We can't rule out some of the lads offered contracts leaving but I'm guessing most will stay. Brayford and Powell are the ones to watch.
Morris could be a problem as Hartlepool have sacked their gaffer. A couple more could do with going to thin out the ranks but that's easier said than done.
If we can move on Blake-Tracy that would be a good start, not sure that Leak, Lakin or Taylor are particularly in his plans so maybe we could see some movement there too. Not that I want either Leak or Taylor gone but we have to be realistic if they aren't playing. Wouldn't rule out a Moult departure either.

It all depends on what Jimmy wants to do, if he is going to play midfielders in midfield then brilliant, maybe we'll see more of Taylor & Co then but if he carries on with playing defenders in midfield then it only makes sense to move Lakin, Taylor etc on, preferably on loan.
Even Gilligan might struggle for regular games despite his new deal unless we see a big change in tactics. Fingers crossed.
Some cracking players being released/rejecting deals around this level at the minute, some of whom you'd consider to be realistic targets, but then I think are we going to stick with the 6/7 at the back stuff next season, that's the biggie. Callum Camps etc being one, great goalscoring midfielder, 26 with over 250 games at League One level, arguably within our reach who's left Fleetwood at the end of his deal. That kind of signing would be a statement of intent.

Here's a few names that I have spotted who have been released from their clubs this summer . Marlon Pack , Joe Ralls, Aden Flint - all Cardiff Sam Wynall - Oxford James Norwood - Ipswich Callum Camps , Anthony Pilkington Kieron O'Hara - all Fleetwood Ryan Broom - Peterborough available for transfer And dear old Colin Daniel - Exeter. There will no doubt be loads more in the coming weeks as the season comes to a close after the play-offs and Premiership finishes. Certainly there are two or three of the above would be good additions if we could afford them .Not Kieron O'Hara or Colin Daniel.

A couple of interesting names I've seen that are becoming available at the end of their contracts are Shaun Whalley and Vadaine Oliver. Solid, experienced L1 players that could supplement the good, younger players that we've already got.

Vadaine Oliver would be a good shout , always seems very physical when I've seen him ,Shaun Whalley probably a bit too old , seems to be have been around for ever.

I've always been an admirer of Marlon Pack, just what we need in midfield, has a good couple of years left in him.

Marlon Pack has always been quality, Tom Eaves has been released by Hull, he'd be perfect for us, very similar player in style and looks to Andy Carroll. I'd say Eaves is certainly within our reach.
Only problem with some of these ex-Championship players is the wages. Our top line is about £3k a week, and some of these lads in the Championship are on £10k/15k a week, and that's just the average ones. I suspect Pack might get a few more years in the Championship or a top end League One side.

We are being linked with striker Callum Hendry currently at St Johnstone ,scored 14 goals for them last season .Fleetwood also interested .He is the son of former Scottish international Colin Hendry.

Think this thread may go a little quiet for a while with Jimmy putting us in the brown stuff. Not what was needed from the manager at all. Depending on what happens it could go a bit crazy after that !
