Certainly one of the very best players that I've seen. RIP

One of the very first foreign players I ever appreciated (in those days I was more interested in Ken Knighton at Sheffield Wednesday).
A true great and a visionary.

Sad news. I was too young to appreciate him as a player at the time, but in the late 90's I did develop a bit of an obsession with Holland 74 and in particular Hendrik Johannes Cruijff. Of that very top echelon of the great attacking players none seemed so lithe and almost balletic. Fantastic player, great coach and always interesting when giving his views on football.

I also have great memories! Was living in Germany during the '74 Wòrld Cup and the country shut down for the final! Holland may well have won that excellent match had The Kaiser not turned Neeskens face into a pizza base. The van der Kerkof brothers were big players as well.

I remember Ken Knighton at Wolves before he joined the Owls ! But back on subject, Johan Cruyff, he was the conductor for the majestic Dutch team of the 70's. Saw him live and wasn't disappointed, footballing genius and I don't use that word lightly. When he was a manager he was also an instigator of new formations and tactics, much of which the modern day Barca is founded on. A very sad loss indeed.
