27 years old. One year contract. League One centre back who appears to be a key player for his teams judging from this report after he broke his leg last Feb: At Boro boss Graham Westley’s press conference today (Thursday), ahead of the trip to Hartlepool on Saturday, he said: “We had bad news on Darius, it was a fracture to his leg. It looks like he has gone for the season, D, and that’s a big blow. “He had been in great form and this is adding to the injury woes. As big a loss as this will be, and the character that he is, and the player that he is, we have to move on without him now. I'm sure he helped smooth the deal at least. Could even release Mousinho back into holding man in centre mid I wonder?

Or could he be coming in as a new target man ? From Stevenage website: Charles has played at centre back, left back and more recently, striker for Boro and has produced some memorable moments since donning the red and white shirt including a stunning strike against Championship-side Reading in the FA Cup in 2011 before scoring the winner in a 1-0 win at the Madejski Stadium in the same competition in 2012. Prior to his move to Stevenage Charles played 37 times for Brentford and had loan spells at four other cubs. Darius’ sheer physical presence, combined with his deceptive pace, makes his a striker to be feared in League Two in 2013/14. Or left back !
DARIUS CHARLES is missing out on his goal of leading the Stevenage attack - because he is shining at left-back.
And Charles, 26, is being backed to carry on doing the business in defence by team-mate Luke Freeman as Borough travel to Shrewsbury today in a crucial clash at the foot of the League One table.
The winner can climb out of the bottom four and majorly boost their survival hopes.
Winger Freeman said: "The thing with Darius is that he plays left-back too good.
"He prefers to play as a centre-forward but you can't not play him in defence, the way he plays.
"I've never seen anyone, in the two years I've been in this league, go around him or get the beating of him."
Sounds a great addition to the squad

This is the immediate response from Stevenage boro fans forum from three posters:
As you know I thought we mostly had better/more natural options than him at LB and up front when he played there, but when he did he always put in pretty solid displays and a lot of fans loved him playing in those positions so I'd say he was pretty good for us, and certainly contributed to some great successes. I do agree with Elkding that I think his versatility did hamper his progress (I guess the fault of GW, see what he did to Freeman two years ago FFS) as he played in so many different positions that he didn't have the chance to settle and develop in any one role/partnership. Now he's regularly playing at CB I think you can see that development and progress and he looks comfortable there and looks a very competent and solid CB to me. It's a great shame that he didn't play there earlier and that he picked up the injury this season as I think he could have been our first choice CB for some time. and I am pretty pissed off that we've let him, Bira and Worley go
He was also injured for the majority of last season having ruptured his ankle ligaments against Everton. Basically, he hasn't really played without a long spell injury free for 2 years.
Well, we offered him a contract and I'm sure those terms were fair based upon his ability, his record for us and his injury record. On the whole, a good player for us who's probably only really just found himself at the age of 26. His greatest asset is his versatility, but that's probably also been the catalyst for why he hasn't progressed further in his career; whether that's his fault of Westley's is open to debate. As a player in present day terms, he's more than a solid defender. Dominant in the air, quick across the ground, comfortable with the ball at his feet and able to bring the ball out from the back. In theory, he's about as complete a defender as you'd expect to get at League 2 level. But, whilst he's improved dramatically on this over the years, he is still prone to a mistake, subject to injury and lacks the natural positioning to be a top defender. His weak positioning is exposed more when he plays as a fullback, as he does have a natural tendency to drift inside and struggles to track his man. Ultimately, if he is deployed as an out an out centre back and can stay injury free, I am very confident that he'll prove to be a very good signing for Burton. Not convinced he'll progress much further than where he's at at the moment, but a fit Darius could form a very good partnership with a strong leadership type (assuming Mousinho still plays centre back).

Darius also created football history when he became the first player to be signed following a vote of club fans/members: (The Ebbsfleet myfootballclub experiment)
After his Brentford contract was cancelled he moved to Ebbsfleet permanently on 29 January 2009, after the owners of Ebbsfleet, MyFootballClub, ratified a compensation fee of £25,000, making this the first transfer in football history to be decided by a group of members. He finished the season with 44 appearances and was named Ebbsfleet's Player of the Year.
Conference Premier rivals York City made a £10,000 bid for Charles in June, which was subsequently rejected, with MyFootballClub members voting against the offer with over a 98% majority

I cant remember the actual game, but he played against us as a striker, and had an excellent game, causing all sorts of problems for our defence on that day. I just wonder if the plan is to play him as a target man. He can certainly do the job. The only problem I have is that I thought Rene Howe was a great signing, and that turned out to be sadly wrong.

I think he would have been striker when he was playing with Mousinho

Although I doubt its the plan
He could start striker and then if he's not delivering has the fallback of defence
Not many strikers have that luxury
Hopefully we signed him as a defender as they tend to get paid less than strikers!!!
lol
Then re-convert him !!
