I don't know.......if you can defend those 'supporters' who moan about the team, when Burton Albion are just one point off the top of League 2, then I think I could make a case for moaning about the moaners!
While I accept the need to live in the present - in fact that's what I think this thread is about - those of us grown long in the tooth can perhaps enjoy these times more than those more recently attracted to the cause, since we remember the dark days of poor games, in poor conditions, in front of poor crowds in the Northern and Southern Leagues. Yes we can look back on those days with some nostalgic warmth (if we try hard enough!) but I doubt many would want to go back there.
I well remember the satisfaction of reaching the Conference that night at Vauxhall Motors - I thought we'd achieved our pinnacle then and was looking forward to us playing against some big-fish ex-League clubs that had dropped down to the Conference.
Then, when we staggered over the line and somehow made it to the Football League, down in Torquay, I also remember thinking we'd be lucky to survive one season in the Football League - that was my wish - that we'd manage at least one season and avoid the humiliation of going straight back down again, being labelled as undeserving, one season-wonders.
Each season of playing in the Football League is a joy to me - to be now challenging for automatic promotion to League 1 means more pinching of a spot that has grown quite sore over the last few years - with promotions, 'unreal' FA cup games, victories over Championship and Premiership sides, a trip to the new Wembley - to be sure I am living the dream and not only dreaming the dream......
These times have brought me much pleasure - thanks due to more than one person I'm sure he'd say but we all know it's primarily been down to Ben Robinson's ability to match his ambition with his patience, common sense, apparent good nature, acquired football experience and all-round business acumen - long may it continue - look after your health Ben - not just for your own sake - you're supporting a big family you know!!!
