Aidy Boothroyd has this afternoon been sacked as Northampton Town manager.
The Cobblers boss was relieved of his duties at Sixfields after today’s 4-1 home defeat to Wycombe Wanderers left his side bottom of League Two for Christmas.
A club statement said: “Aidy Boothroyd has left Northampton Town Football Club.
“The decision was made by Chairman David Cardoza after Saturday’s loss to Wycombe Wanderers.
“The club will make no further comment at this time, but will provide a further update on Monday.”
Suspicions that Boothroyd had left the club were aroused when he failed to appear for his usual post-match interview after the dismal Wycombe defeat.
Instead club spokesman Gareth Willsher addressed the media.
“It’s been a disappointing day on the pitch, and we have the disappointing news that Aidy Boothroyd has left the club,” he said.
“The chairman [David Cardoza] wasn’t here today, but the other directors and his father [Tony] were.
“Various conversations have been taking place over the last hour or so, but the upshot of it is that Aidy has left the club.
“He had a chat with the board, and obviously it’s a decision that nobody is happy with and is disappointing that it has to be made.
“The board of directors have to look at the bigger picture, and obviously the league position is disappointing and the board felt they had to make that decision.
“The only news is that Aidy has left, no decision has been made with regard to [coaches] Andy King and Tim Flowers.
“We’ll let the dust settle over the weekend and provide a further update on Monday about who will be taking charge of the game at Burton.”
The emphatic nature of the scoreline may have helped to seal the fate of Boothroyd, who spoke about the recent spate of managerial departures as recently as Tuesday.
He said: ““I think that it’s very, very easy to chop and change and to move people out.
“The players are absolutely all with me, all with the club.
“We’re all pushing forward, and if that happens in other clubs I don’t see the point in changing it, I really don’t.”
Former Gillingham boss Martin Allen has been installed as an early favourite for the vacancy following the sacking.
