Personally throughout pre-season I don't think anybody can really moan at Atkins performances. Ok, nobody was particularly over the moon that Gary decided to sign him, but we've now hopefully got a number two who is capable of pushing him all the way for a starting place and us as fans just need to get behind the lad.
Gary will have signed him with the backing of Kev Poole, who at the end of the day will know much more about Ross as a keeper than any of us do. So lets look at the positives of his keeping abilities and hope that he keeps improving, as throughout pre-season so far he hasn't been at fault for any of the goals that we have conceded.

He's made a few fantastic saves so far this pre-season, and he seems to be commanding his box more than he did last season. League Two seems to be his level. We could've done a lot worse, remember Bertrand Bossu?

I still fail to see why we would try to improve the back four, which we may/may not have done (unconvinced so far) but keep a very dodgy keeper behind them. Atkins isn't rubbish, but he's certainly the worst keeper we've had since Dan Crane in terms of stupid mistakes and genuine lack of goalkeeping ability, even Deeney was a better all round keeper. So many other good keepers out there and we take the easy, cheap, Derby option. Lyness wont get a look in unless Atkins is injured or sent off either no doubt.

We could've done a lot worse, remember Bertrand Bossu? Bossu was some random bloke who wandered into The Lamb and somehow got 45 minutes in goal for us. I'm sure of it. He was, bar none, the worst goalkeeper I've ever seen. As for Atkins, I'm reserving judgement until I've seen him have a run of games behind a settled back four in a proper league situation when you get put under real pressure. In my opinion last season he made mistakes, it got to him and totally shot his confidence but we mistakenly persevered with him. He should have been taking out of the firing line WAY before he was. Pre season means nothing. It's all about fitness.

As my old mate Mitch used to say "defend from the front".

yeah, it would be nice to take Jake Butland in on loan but we don't have that kind of cash. if more folk showed up at home games we might have.
but as for Ross, I think he saved us on many occasions last season when tony was flailing around in front of him. for me Ross was a my 3rd choice for player of the year after Stanno and Calvin.

but we've now hopefully got a number two who is capable of pushing him all the way for a starting place and us as fans just need to get behind the lad. I think that hope may be misplaced. Lyness' performance - and more worryingly, his apparent nervousness - at Ilkeston made Atkins look like Iker Casillas. My worry is that yet again we have no viable 2nd option if Atkins is struggling.

I don't understand all the negativity around Atkins. He deserves a good chance with us, hopefully in front of a better organised defence. The defending for their goal from the set piece was very poor though. This still worries me. I also don't accept all the crap written about Corbs on this site. He is still the best right back at the moment in the club. Stanno played well there in the second half, but that was against different players. Stanno can certainly do a good job there, but he is really needed at centre back. I think GR was experimenting with the second half back four of Stanno, Diamond, Holness, McCready, in case he doesn't sign a new right back At the moment I would expect the season to start with Corbett, Diamond, Stanno, and McCready. Webbster isn't going to be fit anyway now. As for Adebola, surely if we sign him, it will be cover for Calvin, to give us two very similar type of target men to play alongside Billy Kee or whoever.

As I've said before on this subject, if Kev Poole didn't think Atkins was good enough he wouldn't be here, if Kev thinks the lad's got what it takes its good enough for me! He has improved, he is communicating with the players a hell of a lot better, and making some good saves, he will only improve with experience!

I would like to agree with you reg BUT.... Derby are paying his wages as long as he gets 1st team games, Kev may not have a say in this matter, mind there is a saving point. If we are near the bottom of the table at christmas, Derby will take Atkins back, giving us 20 + games to get out of the POO !!!

Where we are at at the moment - that ain't gonna be likely.

Brewer95 if we are top of the league and Atkins is still number one, conceded very few goals, kept more than a handful of clean sheets and improved as much as folks are expecting him to then i will be one of the first to come on here and admit i was wrong to doubt his ability. At the moment i still feel very nervous with him between the sticks.

The only reason atkins is first choice,is because derby are paying his wages if he plays, look at last season should have been dropped, not until the poo was hitting the fan,did burton look for a replacement.Just a cheaper option(a goalkeeper for free)be afraid be very afraid at rotherham when it counts.
