Apparently we are looking at Paul Coutts of Sheff Utd......could sacrificing Jamie be part of the plan to free up wages? I'd love to see Couttsy here, I could write for hours and hours about how good he is on the ball if we play him centrally. I could wax all day long about his link up with Brayford if we play them together on the right side. I could and would shout from the rooftops about his ability to never give the ball away, to receive it in tight spots and to get us "playing through the thirds". He's a brilliant link man, someone who cand and does dictate the pace of the game BUT.... he's not Jamie Allen and I don't mean that negatively, they're just different. He's certainly not a goal threat. For me Jamie was probably our most improved player last season, his energy levels and his abiltiy and willingness to keep making runs beyond was brilliant. I expected if he was going to leave us it would be for Championship club rather than a club who don't even have their own ground. It just shows even more clearly where we are in the pecking order even at League One level we're going to have our work cut out to keep hold of anyone better than average 'cos we simply can't pay what other clubs can pay. Gutted to see Jamie go, gutted that Nigel has to work under such restrictive conditions but I also understand why and appreciate the good things he has to work with to compensate for bugger all money. Would love it if Paul Coutts joins but it would have me scratching my head as to where he'd fit with Quinny nailing down the holding midfielder spot as his own. We need a runner from somewhere and I think Scotty Fraser is too good with the ball to "sacrifice" in that role. I've been trying to get Coutts to sign for Nigel again for the last 3 years by stalking him on twitter. One of my top 5 favourites of Nigels signings away from Burton. He'd be great for us, The boo boys will hammer him though 'cos he runs funny and he's one of Nigel's "mates".

Sounds promising Broomo and nice to see very positive but honest thoughts. I’d take Coutts under any circumstances.

Coults been released by Sheff Utd,certainly been part of a good Sheff Utd squad,been plagued by injuries Clough took him to utd with him coming back from injury while at Derby.won over the blade fans,broke his leg while playing against Burton.age 31- 6 foot tall, would be a solid ball playing addition. played under clough at Derby and Sheff Utd, Clough has a problem when league 1 teams can choose players,and we offer what we can being part of a footballing community and a progressive club, but football is a job=career for the players. Allen gone not good news,waiting for comments from Nigel.losing players to bigger clubs must be hard .Perhaps he thinks Burton Albion does well and keeps the scouts busy

But are you a bigger club if you don’t own your own ground Trev? Sometimes for me players can’t see beyond the end of their nose.

I'm just very pleased not to be a loyal Coventry City fan. From the outside looking in this is a shambolicly administered club,but with a good manager. Thank goodness for Ben Robinson 😀

Sadly yes, but if the talks with Coutts are true, maybe he had a little shove?

I read the thread. It was tough going for someone like me who has to think hard when it comes to financial figures.

I think job security and career prospects/development talk.
At 24 a 3 year contract , on better money and the opportunity to play at a historically big club and big crowds.
He has had a good season and as somebody said above was our most improved player last year IMO.
Good luck to him.

Coming from Rochdale moving on to Burton.and now coventry looks like he is moving forward in his career.Wait a minute Coventry are now dysfunctional,first Northampton and now Birmingham for ever i roam must be their motto. The manager Mark Robins on a 3 year contract having joined in 2017 for his 2nd spell with the club. Jami Allen 24 stated he could not wait to join such a massive club, he must be going back to 2001,since then turmoil has been the order off the day. Going into a very important time in his career,good luck to him, Poor old Nigel thats 7 players moved on to greener fields for me just moved side ways, with better bank balances,nothing to do with football, [brewerstalk=we move on]

Ok, in summary (my interpretation of this thread)....
Jamie Allen has left. This is disappointing / a blow as was an excellent player for us last season. However, he is not so good as to be irreplaceable, we have received a fee and freed up some wages (which were presumably reasonably high as we signed in the championship) and it's the nature of Burton Albion that there will always be 'bigger' teams willing to offer more money than we can;
Paul Couts is available on a free and has a good relationship with Nigel. If fit he would be an excellent signing but of course this is just speculation at this stage;
My summary of the finances - Burton Albion do not spend money we haven't got to buy players we can't afford.

The saddest thing of all? I don’t ever think that Jamie will play in that many games for Cov. My prediction is 20 odd in his first season. F

Yes Andy Pilley will be throwing his money around but with Mickey Mouse crowds, now Simon Sadler has taken over at Blackpool.

A mate of mine is an ex Coventry board member, he went to watch them play Leamington in their first pre-season friendly. He sent me a text, trying his best not to gloat.
Jamie Allen apparently man of the match by a mile, up and down the pitch like a madman and they're really buzzing about him.
Kyle was "solid as a rock" and "brilliant with the ball at his feet".
He ended it by asking if we had "anybody else we can nick off of you"
Now apart from being grammatically incorrect and me wanting to tell him to eff off. He made a very good point.
I quite fancy Coventry to be up there, my only hope is that they don't settle well at St Andrews, otherwise I reckon that's one of the top 6 spots taken care of.

One match doesn't maketh a season. I know pal and especially not a friendly against non league oppostion. I just think Robins is putting a tidy little squad together and judging by the fact they weren't a million miles away last time around I think they'll do quite well. I'm still very hopeful of our chances by the way. The signing of a keeper will go a long way to convincing me one way or another. I'd say any side that finishes 3 point away from Cov will be a play off chaser. I hope they struggle just so I can have a little dig at my mate who thinks they'll finish 15 points above us. I've been wildly wrong before. Probably only once mind you. I'm great, I love me ;-)

One match doesn't maketh a season. I concur. Anyone who saw Scott Fraser pre season v Villa (I think) would have thought we had got a guy who could not run, pass, shoot, or quote pi to 48 decimals places. Fortunately that was not the case.
