Can't fault the effort of the team again, for much of the game we matched their endeavour and effort although I do agree that Newcastle were coasting in the second half. Just a pedantry moan and groan, obviously Newcastle were wasting time, all teams do it and yet, very little sign from Probert that he was doing anything about it. He made a few gestures but nothing improved, he didn't seemed to add much time on, I was expecting 6 mins yet only 4 mins was showed. He then only added on 3 mins 51secs. There were also several occasions throw ins and the like when he simply did n't indicate which way it was. It annoys me. He had last season off through ill health apparently, I wish him well, but don't rush back to the Pirelli. Oh and just seen the rugby tackle by Shelvey on Brayford on the highlights... www.skysports.com/watch/video/sports/football/competitions/championship/10700137/burton-1-2-newcastleAnd what a cockwomble Shelvey is, his taunting along the Popside when they scored the second goal was completely unnecessary. Overrated, overpaid and overinflated ego. Reminded me of Lee Hughes in the complexly lacking humility and class stakes.

I can't help thinking we should have had a point out of that game. That Akins miss plus Jamie coming on too late, why?
Loving it anyway, we move on to the next. Just a small club again.

Shelvey is a total sh*thouse and I think everyone knows it. I remember seeing the highlights of their last minute win against Norwich and instead of celebrating with his teammates he went round two or three Norwich players and screamed in their faces first. He'll get his. Karma's a bitch.
Another battling performance, another game where we should've got something but didn't. The effort and commitment is there but that little bit of luck and quality we've found on our side in the past few years is missing. It's got to turn sooner or later, surely...?

Very proud of Burton Albion today. Deserved all 3 points and outplayed Newcastle for most of the game. They were very lucky. Shelvey is a knob, over paid Nancy boy. They can keep him, wouldn't come here again if the nonce played for us. I don't think they coasted at all. We were all over them and the better team.

Great game, atmosphere and afternoon out. Again not the result we need but beginning to think that will be the norm we just not quite got that quality in their third of the park.

My random initial thoughts on this afternoon:
Really proud of the shift put in by us today
Irvine must be pound for pound best signing in the league?
Newcastle could have gone up a couple of gears in the 2nd half - great tactical judgement from Rafa
Give us shelvey and Gayle and we would be pushing for play offs
Our squad depth worries me - only 1 sub as everyone else would have weakened the team
Love Mous but he scares me every time he has the ball
Our season will not be defined by today and boxing day - Rotherham and Preston afterwards will be bigger

Just been speaking to Paul Dubbett's mum. She confirmed that he is rubbish.

Ask my kids; one of the sayings I continually spout off is "There's no such thing as luck. The harder you work, the luckier you get."
Burton Albion are proving me wrong.
I came away from the game quite irritated. If we'd been played off the park by a much better team, I'd have been happy with a 4-0 spanking. Instead, we lost to an inferior team. Give us Gayle and we'd win the league. We should have beaten them. We gave them two goals - two mistakes, two goals. Our goal was a work of beauty. Our defence was made up of three players, two of which played in League One last season and the other got relegated from the Championship. They hardly tested us. Moose showed great character to put in a great shift after his howler and McCrory only did one thing wrong all match - gift them the winner. The mighty Newcastle Utd wasting time against Burton Albion. How the mighty fall.
I liked the idea of leaving Jamie Ward as a sub. I'm surprised other teams don't hold something back. When we beat Southend in the play-offs, Rowett kept a half fit Billy Kee for the second half - stroke of genius. Brayford in midfield was a masterstroke - got us a goal.
I'm getting fed up with 'punching above our weight'. As a club? Yes. As a team? No, we are not punching above our weight - this IS our weight. If we don't start scoring soon, we're going down. If we'd got thrashed every week, I'd have no problem with going down. We have matched every team in this league (maybe not Reading) and all we need is someone to start scoring.
Sorry if this doesn't fit in with the other "Didn't we do well" posts but that's how I'm feeling tonight. Many may think I'm being unrealistic but I think we belong in this league. I've not seen anything to the contrary (apart from millions of pounds worth of substitutes) from any of the teams we've met.

Agree with what you are saying Sinfin. With a bit more luck we could have alot more points on the board. Last minute defeat to Bristol City and the injury time Fulham equaliser spring to mind.

It's definitely been a surprise that no team I've seen so far has had that swagger or aura of superiority I expected many opposition teams to bring with them this year. I thought the gap between L1 and the Championship was going to be huge, and it probably has been but we've nullified it by compiling a brilliant first XI or small squad of 13 (yesterday + Ward + Turner).

Problem will come if 13 becomes 10 through injuries, yet more suspensions etc.

We accomplished ourselves admirably against the best team in the league and without 2 mistakes could have come away with the result, we are doing well but if we want to stay up must start turning these decent performances into points, I honestly thought we would be getting thrashed by teams like this but thus far have not been out classed by anyone, if Ben can find enough loose change to attract a couple of decent signings in January I am still optimistic that we can pull of a minor miracle and actually survive. Its unbelievable that I felt slightly disappointed to have lost narrowly to the Toon. COYB

A huge crowd for us yesterday, 6,665. Would that be a record gate for a league match? We probably had more against Man. U but that was a cup match.
Two excellent games against two teams at the top of our league but no points. Oh well we knew it wasn't going to be easy but there must be several teams who will finish below us on those performances.
Newcastles second goal was initiated with a delightful one touch with the outside of a boot, which allowed Diame to get goal side of McCrory, and finish with a good shot. Beavon is the player in our squad who can provide those quick touches.

So proud of the way we played when we settled down. We played the better football and had them on the back foot. Think every team would like a striker with pace and goals. If Atkins had taken that chance then things would have been so different. We deserved the 3 points never mind a draw! Atkins had a good game and put himself about. We look a good side with Tom in the midfield, so underrated! After watching that performance we can stop up! Just really enjoy watching this team...

No. 6746 is the record set against Derby earlier this season. The record cup attendance is 6450 set against Liverpool in the league cup this season. The Man Utd game is about 5th on the list with 6191 there (reduced capacity at the time?)

Bit odd given Derby & Liverpool both on Sky which I thought reduced capacity, yet Saturday was supposedly a sell out...

Assume it was ST holders that didn't make it? Not sure what else it could be. But then 600 ST holders not coming to this game doesn't sound right either!

Attendance on Saturday 6665. Difference 247. Quite feasible with season ticket holders working, sick, on holiday, attending a family wedding or unavoidably shopping with the Mrs.

That's the busiest I've ever seen the Pirelli, people were queueing outside the entrances to the popside terracing all the way down, I got there at 3.01 and the guy wasn't going to let me in. Surrounded by Newcastle fans but not a peep of bother and I don't really mind that, they're all putting an extra 20 quid into the club that we wouldn't have got otherwiae. Was a bit surprised to hear only 6600 announced.
I agree with those who say Shelvey is a sh*thouse but some of his passing first half was out of this world and you've got to give credit where it's due, the ball for their first was brilliant, the bald headed tw*t.
Mouse has STILL got three options to get it right, either stand up and jockey him, go to ground and win the ball or go to ground don't win the ball but wipe out the man, unfortunately he did none of the above.
I thought we were very good value for a point though and when you consider cost v cost, wage v wage and experience v experience it's no embarrassment to lose by the odd goal.
Agree with those who said playing Brayford in midfield was a masterstroke, most of the teams in this league would have seen him play on the right of the three and forgotten what a marauding full back he is given a chance to get forward. McCrory went from being sublime against Huddersfield to very dodgy distribution wise, don't know why he looked to go long most of the time when we were looking very capable when we got it down and played it.
Really very pleased with both of the last two home performances, yet we come away pointless. Showing again what a tough league we've found ourselves in. We really need two players in in January and they've got to be 2 who will challenge the first 11, once Wardy was on yesterday you look at the rest of the bench and don't really see too many game changing options.
