I'm not counting any chickens but purely asking in speculation. Should we get promoted at the end of the season would we be the smallest club ever to grace the championship ? I'm guessing that we will.

I'd say so. I'd guess you're probably looking at Colchester and Yeovil as the other small clubs that have ventured into the 2nd tier but neither got up there on sub 3000 gates. Just shows what an absolutely astonishing achievement it would be.

Colchester's average attendance when they got promoted to the 2nd tier for the first time in their history in 05/06 was 3969. Yeovil's average attendance in 12/13 when they went up was 4072. No idea whatsoever about their budgets but remarkable achievements nonetheless.

How about Wimbledon in the 80's, I don't know what there attendances were but I used to deliver to Oddbins depot just up the road from Plough lane and that ground was tiny.
It wasn't the Championship then though it was div 2, did you just mean the championship TM?

If we do back-to-back-to-back promotions we'd certainly be the smallest in the PL... Too soon ? I think this season started off as a dream and now it's becoming very much a reality that were good enough. Next year may be a different kettle of fish!

Best I can find is that they were averaging about 3459 when they got promoted from the old division three. Oxford and Sheffield United went up with them. Chelsea and Man City were in the 2nd tier and Derby were getting relegated to the 3rd tier! All before my time, by the way

The real question is would we be the 3rd or 4th Burton club to play at that level?

I remember in the 1970's (yes - I am that old!) that Manchester Utd and Spurs were both relegated to what was then called Division 2 (now the Championship). Both were promoted after one season, but Manchester Utd, played York (who were promoted and relegated after one season) and Spurs played Mansfield (who were promoted and relegated after one season).
There are big clubs playing in the Championship, and like Terraceman, I'm not re-empting anything (far from it!) but the mind boggles at the thought of a potential league fixture between Burton Albion and some of those teams.

What parameters define a small club? Town population, budget, fanbase, ... edit: all of the above?

What parameters define a small club? Town population, budget, fanbase, ... edit: all of the above? Blimey Herb ! I'm not sure what the parameters are to be honest ! On a more serious note I think genuinely we would be classed as a small club and if we do make it I would imagine we will be the smallest club to have played in the championship since its inception. Personally I think not only would it be brilliant for us but good for football in general because we are seen as a model of how a football club should be run.

Spot on mate. Not sure if you recall the very first Football League Show with Manish Bhasin in August 2009. It was BAFC's first weekend in League footy and they were a focal point of the show. An economics professor from Nottingham Uni (I'm pretty sure I have that right) was allowed to study the Albions books from the previous number of years and give his educated opinion. To sum up his report he said, BAFC is a prime example of how a football club should be run!

I think small club is basically governed by fanbase
And we can't argue we are a small club
But I bet we are one of the Top 5 best well ran clubs in British Professional Football
Having said that - we would need to grow and need more staff if we got promoted albeit temporarily.
Ben and his daughter can't do everything etc

By population we would be the smallest beating Burnley and Scunthorpe by about 8000 inhabitants

I think one should consider Northampton Town. Starting in Division 4 in !960/61 they had four promotions in five seasons and played in Division 1 in 1965/66 finishing second bottom. They arrived back in to Division 4 in 1969/70. I don't know what their attendances were but it was a heck of a ride.
