If John Charles graced the Eton Park turf then I think the question of best player to ever appear against us begins and ends there. Even if he was only on the touchline he probably deserves it. Did he actually play against us or was he just managing Merthyr?

John Charles Definitely played I was at the game. A true gentleman. The term "legend" gets used way too much but he is one of a select few in this sport that fits firmly into that category. A goalkeeper and two defenders desperately trying to stop him score... Regarded by Juventus as the finest forward to ever play for them and is so revered at Leeds United that only him and Don Revie have stands named after them. Incredible goalscoring record at Hereford as well.

Yes he definitely played there for Hereford - and it was a Saturday afternoon game in the Southern League Premier. I believe he was Player-Manager but may well have played at Centre Half that day.

Must have been 66/67 - 37 goals in 52 appearances, as he didn't play after that.

I wasn't even born then but for sure he is a legend. No doubt about that.

I think it was the mid 60's - probably 1966 as mentioned above. He definitely plated for Hereford United. I sat in the stand with my uncle who was Welsh - no prizes for guessing who he was supporting.
Contrary to what I said in my earlier post, it was not one of the first games I saw - that was some 10 years before then.

Going back to Wellington St., I believe Bert Williams may have turned out in goal for Wolves "A" during the fifties. We also had Bill Townsend (ex Derby Co.) in goal for us at about this time & later on Les Green before he headed to the Baseball ground.
