I was listening to Howard Webb Saturday commenting on time added on at the end of a half. He confirmed that top level referees are advised to blow as close as possible to the amount shown by the third linesman unless there has been another incident in added time. I.e. If he shows 2 mins, blow at 2.01 or 2.02. Here is a novel idea, how about blowing when time is up I.e. When the time is added that you have stopped, not an imaginary/arbitrary time you make up. They have managed a system like this in rugby league since 1972 and there is complete transparency in rugby union now, as we have seen in the RWC. Football though remains a backward sport.

Interesting piece.
We are always told that the announcement of added time has to be 'There will be a MINIMUM of X number of minutes added time.'
Therefore when the board goes up with say 3 on it that to me means anything from 3 minutes up to 3 minutes 59 seconds.
People seem to forget that when they start constantly heckling the ref to blow and you then get managers questioning referees in the media for playing perhaps 45 seconds more than what was on the board.
I agree, time for an independent timekeeper to take it on.
