Another reason to be thankful for the chairman we have! Get your tickets folks! Northampton Town Football Club has been given three weeks to pay back more than £10m to the borough council. Northampton Borough Council said it has asked for the money back as the club has missed two repayments, as revealed by the Chronicle and Echo. The council said it had been promised repayment when the club is sold but said the sale "does not seem to be proceeding". Northampton Town chairman David Cardoza said he intends to repay the debt. A council spokesman said legal notices have been issued to the club requiring the repayment of £10.25m. If the sum is not repaid in full in three weeks the council will begin legal proceedings to recover the debt. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-northamptonshire-34358704?ns_mchannel=social&ns_campaign=bbc_match_of_the_day&ns_source=facebook&ns_linkname=sport

No sympathy for the club whatsoever but definitely for the fans. A club like many seemingly run totally opposite to us.

This in itself isn't what's bad for football. What IS bad for football is the fact that in 3-5 years time their debt will have been written off at the expense of their creditors and they'll be allowed to spunk money on promotion once again. Look no further than the current top two in league two...

Agreed Spence, couldn't give a monkeys chuff for teams that have wilfully spent ridiculous money chasing the dream, going into administration, not paying the often good people who have provided services in good faith and then starting again with a few points knocked off, just to do it all again.
I remember Northampton 'stealing' Shaun Harrad on daft wages. We didn't compete with the daftness and yet at the time they were competitors of ours spending money they probably didn't have. Just authorised cheating for me.

I think it is not good for football, the clubs and the towns and fans that 'this' happens to far too often. No sympathy for the owners at all. But one problem is how are these types of owners (include the previous one in N'ton) allowed to own football cubs and drive them into the ground by dubious financial deals, mismanagement, over-spending etc. Leeds, Portsmouth, Blackpool, Hereford, the list is long. But I think in the bigger picture it is the game, the towns and fans who have to pick up the pieces.

When Boothroyd was their manager, they wanted Clarke Carlisle as we did. They offered him £1600 a week, and we offered him £800 a week. (This information is from Carlisle's autobiography). He ended up at Northampton of course. I assume this typified the wage gulf at the time. Since then they have had to reduce their wages due to the FFP agreements, but I guess the damage was already done. No doubt as everyone above has stated, the honest service suppliers to the football club will end up paying the price, to allow the cycle to begin again.

If I lived in Northampton and supported them I would be chuffed to bits, if I lived in Northampton and was not a football fan I Would be furious that my taxes had been wasted so badly.

Northampton Supporters Trust raised £42k in a bid to help keep the club alive and pay the tax bill. I wonder what happens to that now?
