Burton Albion Vs. Rochdale
Posted By Matt Fletcher on September 11, 2015
In your average League One campaign, games come thick and fast, but Burton Albion and Rochdale will be thankful of the much-needed rest that a week without any mid-week games has allowed them. With this in mind, both teams should be feeling fresh, and will be raring to go in this clash between two teams who occupy play-off places as things stand.
The work of Burton's former manager Gary Rowett, and his replacement Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, culminated in the Brewers being promoted to League One as Champions last season. Playing in the third tier of English football for the first time in their history, many thought Burton Albion may struggle coping with the step up – but that has been far from the case.
After some impressive performances and results, Burton find themselves in 5th place, winning 4, and losing just 2 of their opening 6 league matches. However, they will be keen to maintain this fine form amidst the visit of tough opponents Rochdale to the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday.
Burton Albion are a team who play free-flowing, attacking football, and can really be a joy to watch. They create a lot of chances in matches, but sometimes lack a cutting edge in the final third. On the whole, they have a solid defensive record in the league, but can sometimes lose concentration and concede sloppy goals – something manager Hasselbaink will be keen to stamp out of their performances.
In terms of summer transfer activity, Burton have signed no less than twelve new players. However, this is somewhat misleading, as eight of the eleven players who started their most recent League One match, also started in their final game in League Two last season against Cambridge. This faith the manager has shown in his players has helped the team maintain it's strong nucleus, and thus been rewarded by their results and position in the table.
Key Player – Stuart Beavon
Beavon initially joined Burton on a season-long loan from Preston, but his deal was made permanent on transfer deadline day. He is a pacey forward who has an eye for goal, but also his willingness to run and close defenders down is what has endowed him to Brewers fans. Burton's player of the season has already scored two goals this campaign, but will be keen to add to this tally against Rochdale.
One to Watch – Abdenasser El Khayati
El Khayati is player who possesses great skill and who can dribble past opponents with ease, allowing him to advance into dangerous positions. This can be seen through the winger's decent goal scoring start to the campaign – 3 goals in 6 games. The Dutch winger is also technically gifted, and can be deadly from set pieces. Rochdale fans will be hoping he doesn't see too much of the ball this weekend.

Rochdale have had to dust themselves down over summer and prepare for another campaign in League One having marginally missed out on the play off's last season. However, falling just six point's short of the cut seems to have given Keith Hill's side the motivation they need to improve on their highest league finish in their history, and go one step further this time around. Early indications would suggest they could be serious contenders for a play-off place come May.
With a manager like Keith Hill, Rochdale are always going to be a team who are notoriously difficult to break down, and ultimately difficult to beat. This has been evident in the league, with Rochdale losing just 1 of their opening 6 games, whilst keeping 4 clean sheets in the process. This impressive defensive record has helped Rochdale to 6th place in the league, whilst remaining unbeaten away from home.
Rochdale's squad this season is not too dissimilar to the one that achieved their highest ever finish. Keith Hill has had to cope with losing Stephen Dawson to Scunthorpe, but he has bolstered his ranks by completing the signing of Jim McNulty following his release from Bury. Overall, Hill will be happy that he has managed to keep the majority of his squad together. The togetherness and team spirit gained from this could prove to be successful formula for success at Rochdale.
Key Player – Olly Lancashire
Lancashire is a tall, commanding centre back, who wins the majority of aerial duels. This ability allows him to be a threat in both boxes, and a goal from a set piece could be the difference against Burton this weekend. Unlike all centre backs, Lancashire is comfortable on the ball and is calm under pressure. The Rochdale captain will be delighted with the number of clean sheet's the team has made, but he will be hoping for another against Burton.
One to Watch – Ian Henderson
Ian Henderson only recently played (and scored) in his 400th career appearance. He is a vastly experienced striker who knows how to put the ball in the back of the net. Last season, the Rochdale man netted 22 times in the league – just 3 goals short of golden boot winner Joe Garner. He has continued this season in a similar fashion by scoring twice in 6 games, and the prolific striker could well prove to be the difference at Burton.
Our Prediction?
Burton Albion 2-2 Rochdale
