As mentioned on the anonymous contracts thread by Peacock, it is rumoured that he is about to, or has signed for us. I don't know what others think. He certainly had a great season for us a while ago, and is a very good player. I know his preferred position is centre back, but played all season for us at right back. I assume he is to provide competition in these positions. The simple fact is we do seem to be building a squad of high quality for the coming season. It looks like being a tough decision for many starting eleven player selections. Plymouth fans are peeved to think he would sign for a small club like us rather than the potentially mighty Plymouth.

He is being used as centre back or holding midfielder lately. LOAN SIGNING Anthony O’Connor is Plymouth Argyle’s most important player, according to manager John Sheridan. O’Connor has impressed as holding player in central midfield since making the move from Championship club Blackburn Rovers at the start of the season. It is a new role for the 21-year-old, who has played in the centre of defence or at right-back in the past, but one he has taken to with tremendous assurance. Sheridan said: “He’s comfortable on the ball, and he’s a footballing centre-half, so he was always going to be someone who could play in that position. “If you have got a defensive-minded player in there he just gives that little bit of cover for your ‘keeper and your back four. It’s like a back six really. “He wants to play anywhere as well. He’s that type of lad – as long as he’s playing he’s happy. “That’s a good thing about him. You put him anywhere on the pitch and he would give you 100 per cent. “He’s part of the way we want to play,” added the Pilgrims’ boss. Sheridan wants to see Argyle play attacking football but also be strong defensively so they do not concede many goals. That is why he rates O’Connor so highly. He said: “I hear a lot of people talk about how we are playing. We are not negative at all. “Any team is very attack-minded. It might end up looking negative because sometimes we defend a little bit too much. The Shrewsbury game (last Saturday) was typical. “I think Anthony O’Connor is my most important player – and no-one has even mentioned him. “The back four get that little bit of comfort of him being in there and it enables my right-back or left-back to join in. At his age he would be another superb signing.
We are going to have a lot of options all over the pitch
And a lot of very hungry players

Anthony O'Connor says he will decide on his future after seeing where Plymouth Argyle end the current season.
O'Connor signed on transfer deadline day, having been for most of the season.
He is an Ireland Under-21 international and has played 30 times for Argyle.
"Hopefully we can be where we want to be at the end of the year and I'll base my future on that," said the 22-year-old, who is a free agent in the summer.
"I'm only here until the end of the season, but that doesn't mean I won't be giving everything to the club because I'm only signed until the end of the season."

I wouldn't say Ant is anonymous but thanks for the mention anyway. Brilliant player for us the year he was here. I would sign him in a hurry while he is still wearing the shirt.

I spoke to a contact of mine this morning who has only ever given me spot on information and I asked him about the rumour that peacock had mentioned on fb earlier in the day. He confirmed to me that Anthony O'Connor was signing for the Brewers this week. Yet another versatile and solid signing, very presently surprised and pleased by his return to the club.

Personally I would think it is pretty well done and dusted, to enable him to be with the group in Holland, even if any compo is yet to be agreed. Surely this would be a very small issue as he was only Plymouth's player from February 2nd this year. Previously being on Blackburn's books since his youth. They gave him a free transfer, I suspect for financial reasons.

As it happens, I don't think Anthony was a very good full back for us, at the time though he was invaluable. But it was obvious he was a really talented footballer and if he signs I would be delighted.

If I've followed things correctly he officially became a Plymouth player towards end of last season having been on loan to them until then but only had a contract til end of season with Plymouth
He said he would be a free agent this summer
So not sure why compensation would still be involved?

compensation is due because the player is under 24 years old and his existing club offered terms at least comparable to what he was on, irrespective of the fact he has turned those terms down to become a free agent. standard Bosman rules. As he was only properly a Plymouth player for three months the compensation should but be much but thems the rules.

It depends on the costs that the club losing the player has incurred in acquiring the player - either development costs of the player or transfer fee. I don't think Plymouth paid for him and it's Blackburn who incurred costs developing him. They also consider the amount of clubs showing an interest to take the player and the value of deal offered to the player by interested clubs. As you say this should be cheap in terms of compensation as Plymouth have incurred very few costs in developing or acquiring this player and as such have very little to be compensated for.

The deal when O'Connor joined Plymouth is described below as Plymouth "taking over his contract" which suggests that Plymouth paid no fee to Blackburn whilst he was under contract so they have little or nothing to be compensated for. Especially as they knew they were only getting a short term deal.
Plymouth have signed Blackburn's Anthony O'Connor on a short-term deal.
The 22-year-old was on loan at Home Park from August until January 10 but the Pilgrims have now taken over his contract until the end of the season.

Does anyone know whether he is in Holland with the squad or not? I have read he may be signed this week which could mean he is still in England. It would just be interesting to know.

I believe he has travelled with the squad to Holland. I guess that paperwork may have already been completed ready to be submitted once everything has been sorted in order for it to go through.

As a free agent I guess he can at least train with us even if he hasn't signed
If he has already signed even better
Thanks for the info CBH!

Any news regarding being offered a contract? I do feel his versatility and quality would be valuable for us in league 1
