SUPPORTER'S of football club, Burton Albion, have been registering their support for their team from all over the globe. Fans from places such as Australia, Sweden and Canada have all made their interest in the Brewers known as part of a Football League campaign.
THE chairman of Burton Albion has praised fans from around the world for registering their support for the club.
Ben Robinson said that the number of worldwide fans the Brewers had was incredible after a large number took to the internet as part of a new initiative.
The 'Stand Up and Be Counted' campaign, run by the Football League, requires overseas-based fans to show their support.
Fans who register get the chance to win a trip for two to the UK, including flights, accommodation and match tickets to see the Brewers play.
To date, 105 Albion supporters have entered, with followers from far flung countries such as the United States, Canada and Australia getting involved.
Mr Robinson said that an FA Cup match against global giants Manchester United helped to promote the club.
The Brewers drew 0-0 with United, in 2006, and earned a replay at Old Trafford.
Burton Albion lost 5-0, but the match was viewed across the globe.
Mr Robinson said: "It is fantastic that we have received this amount of support so far, especially considering it has been almost 10 years since we played United.
"I mean, after the first game we were receiving emails from places such as Cambodia, Argentina and South Africa.
"Football fans love an underdog and that's what we were."
All 72 teams in The Football League are part of the campaign, with each club showing the number of fans from each country that have registered and an overall leader board.
It comes as no surprise to the chairman that people in Sweden have almost as many votes as those in the United States, thanks to a special group of fans.
He said: "I do have a few family members in the US. But we have our own fan group over in Sweden called the Gothenburg Brewers, who are bound to have had members taking part."
The supporters group from Scandinavia have a website dedicated to Albion and regularly make trips over to the Pirelli Stadium to watch their beloved team play.
One of those fans, Joachim Jacobson, 34, told the Mail that he was one of the first to vote.
He said: "I'm a proud Burton Albion supporter.
"The campaign shows the great interest of English football overseas in general."
Last season saw Albion crowned League Two champions and promoted to League One, the first time in the club's history.
Mr Jacobson said: "It was a fantastic day. It was also kind of a relief since we left Wembley with empty pockets the previous season.
"The club has a really solid base to build on right now. A mid-table finish would suit my hopes."
