Women's World Cup 2015 kicks off in Edmonton with over 51K tickets sold for the opening match! C'mon Canada! Watch Christine Sinclair and Desiree Scott for Canada! And lots of other very good players in this tournament.
I really hope that all players/teams are able to adapt to the plastic pitches. The amount of rubber coming off the pitch tonight is crazy! And at 28C a synthetic pitch makes it feel about 33C at pitch level.
Edit: over 53K attended the opening match.

Fabulous crowd for the opening game, I hope that it is a great tournament.
As for the pitches, I think it is a shame that they are not playing on grade, but what they are playing on is a far cry from Loftus Road in the 80s.
Showpiece event for FIFA, I wonder whether Blatter will turn up..

I watched England's game against France tonight, although the score line was only 1-0 to France, the gulf in class was enormous, technically inferior England failed to control the ball and so the match at any time. I don't think they mustered a shot on target. The commentators said they performed well but I totally disagreed with this. Well organised and plenty of fight but nothing else to offer I'm sorry to report. As for the French, everything England had but the ability, technique, nous and mobility on top of that to dictate the game with relative ease.

Yes, it was very much a one-sided match. The key difference for me was physical conditioning of the players. Both teams have skill, but as one commentator said the French players are athletes. They are one of the favoured teams to win this year and should be in the last 4 at least. At London2012 they lost the Bronze Medal game to Canada (1-0 with a goal in added time) but France were the better side by a long shot. (tbf though the Canadians were on a low after losing an amazing and exciting semifinal to USA at Old Trafford).
Edit: June 12th The Germany-Norway game was very entertaining. German dominated the first half, Norway made a sub at halftime and changed their tactics and dominated the second half. A 1-1 draw is an upset for Norway!

Yes she did really well against Mexico, I thought England looked much better when they upped the tempo and played there natural game. Karen Bardsley the keeper though I have always thought is an accident waiting to happen. She has been at fault with both goals England have conceded at the tournament. Lucy Bronze the England right back had a superb game in my opinion.

Not sure about the pitch at Moncton. It really takes the pace off the ball and the players seem to take a while to adjust to it. I didn't see much of the France game (fortunately), but enjoyed the Mexico one. I agree completely with the comments about Kirby and Bardsley.

Bronze is as hard as bronze! Very good player, she is a rock in d. From what I have seen the plastic pitches are a nightmare, and that is why the players are suing. It is not just the Moncton pitch, it is the same pitch at all venues. Rubber bits flying everywhere, imagine trying to breath during a slide tackle! Your lungs would be full of hot rubber bits. And in the sun the rubber heats up and really burns your feet. I refereed on these types of pitches in California and it's no fun, the pitch is hot, the air becomes hotter than it should be, and you can imagine the situation when players start spitting on them. www.theguardian.com/football/2015/may/30/womens-world-cup-canada-artificial-pitches

At the Canada v Switzerland match yesterday in Vancouver there were 53,855 spectators. Excellent support!
Oh, and Canada won 1-0 to get to the quarter finals!

I think the England team have been the better team so far, but it's a game of football. Anything can occur!
The temperature in the stands for the England game was 70F (21C) and at pitch side it was 90F (32C). Plastic and rubber pitches eh? Oh boy! Will they be using them in Qatar, I wonder? Oh, probably not. Sepp has been dropped by his 'contacts'.

Well, I don't think the best team on the night won the game but that's football. So well done and good luck to the Lionesses tonight, should be a great match. But more importantly, here is how you watch World Cup Football in Canada!

Unfortunately I havn't been able to finish work early enough to get up pit bonk for the friendly so will settle down later to watch the lasses. Actually saw the England v Japan game at the Pirelli. If we play to our strengths we could win this game. Jodie Taylor up front looks a quality striker.

Shame the licensing laws have not been relaxed to allow our pubs and clubs to open late. If it were a men's game they would.
I see the final is midnight Sunday going into Monday too, hopefully this government will be forced into recognising that we have a chance of winning the thing and relax the licensing laws.
Come on you Lionesses!

Are licensing hours not up to the landlord if they had applied for late closing a few years back? I dunno know. But I doubt there would be enough punters willing to be up that late on a Sunday night to watch women's footy to make it profitable.
England's Ladies have improved massively since London2012. As for the match, "Although Siobhan Chamberlain, his No2 goalkeeper, is standing by to deputise once again, Sampson is optimistic Karen Bardsley will be fit to start against Japan following the eye problems which forced her substitution early in the second half of the 2-1 quarter-final win against Canada.
“Karen should be fine,” he said. “She suffered an allergic reaction to something, we don’t know what but the swelling has gone and her eyes are completely back to normal.”
He was rather more circumspect about the chances of Jodie Taylor starting. The Portland Thorns player is England’s most dangerous striker and scored the opening goal against Canada but has been suffering the after-effects of playing 90 minutes in Vancouver only two months after knee surgery.
“We’ve got to wait and see on Jodie,” Sampson said. “We’ll make a late decision on her. For Jodie to play the full game against Canada was a big thing. We’ve got to make sure her knee is right.”
Maybe that's just tactics? He could use Houghton up front, she is big and can handle the smaller Japanese, or Fran Kirby but that would be huge pressure on 'mini Messi'. Looking forward to it!

But I doubt there would be enough punters willing to be up that late on a Sunday night to watch women's footy to make it profitable. Yes they can do that, but for the men's world cup they give a blanket authority thereby saving a Temporary Event Notice application which cost 20 odd quid. I also agree there may not be much of a take up, I was just struck by the inequality of the situation really. Anyway, I hope that we smash it tonight, looking forward to it...

Ok, cool. I thought there was some relatively easy way to have a 'closed doors' session.
The thing that stands out in the Women's World Cup is their determination to play fair, to stay on their feet even when tapped in the box instead of diving. Also, the way they put hands up after a miss-timed tackle and offer the opponent help to get up, the fact the referees are not surrounded at every call whether right or wrong. And the commentators have made it a point to acknowledge this!! I hope the men are watching.

That foul was outside the box, yellow card yes but not a pen. IMO
Edit: and that wasn't a pen either, that was a dive! Oh well, it's 1-1, start again.

Was goal line technology used in the award of the winning goal?
