One year deal probably means we are paying a big wage but just committing to one season. If we got promoted we could look at a new deal etc.
I get the feeling the club are seriously going for it this season.

We look like we have a good squad which looks stronger than last season. The unbeknown factor is how the other clubs have improved and how the 4 relegated sides from league 1 and the 2 promoted sides from the Conference will perform. I'm sure we will do well even allowing for that.

It was no doubt a done deal yesterday if he was quoted in this mornings paper saying "But I am now looking forward to life at Burton and seeing how far we can kick on." Guess we just had to wait for the official announcement.. Welcome aboard Jon!! Depends whether you mean the deal was done or whether he had signed. Some people are keen on the distinction... " no doubt a done deal yesterday"...... We do speak the same language don't we? Some people are just keen on trying to create something out of nothing...

A year ago we also thought similar things with Howe, Gurks, Hussey who were from the same league but for Gurks. We'll see how quickly and smoothly the new players fit in, sometimes it takes awhile. One thing that hasn't changed is our defense so I still see us playing a 6 defender system with a lets not lose tactic. However, I would prefer to push forward more with a lets win this tactic. Here's hoping. And terraceman you are right about needing to see what other clubs are doing. I know Shrewsbury, York, Northampton, Oxford and Luton have all been busy over the summer. I think Tranmere have really cleaned house so don't know what to expect from them. We shall see but the changes at the Pirelli do look promising and should keep us in the mix for a playoff spot at least. COYB!!!

Well done Gary Rowett ! A major accomplishment in strengthening the team and squad. Deano has done superb and I really like him between the sticks but is perhaps not quite the finished article yet. McLaughlin has the edge in experience and as regards the level he has played at but he will have to perform well if he is to become the no 1 keeper which is what I expect him to do. Its strange how Jordan Pickford's situation last season left us in the lurch so to speak and now this season has worked hugely in our favour ! I suspect Christian Ribiero may be our next signing and we will then have a very solid squad with cover in all positions. Do we still need another striker - big lad or not?

Not forgetting the other two relegated clubs Stevenage and Carlisle and then there's Portsmouth, Plymouth and Bury and both Mansfield and Newport could build on their first seasons back in the League. I think it'll be tougher than last season - for everyone not just us - but I'll be surprised if we're not competitive again, given the strengthening Gary has done

I thought last season was below expectations regarding the standard of play we expect at League 2. But generally the standard improves year on year. This season is going to be very different. We have Luton back, along with Portsmouth, Plymouth, Shrewsbury, Bury, Tranmere etc. This season is going to be tough. The Brewers though are still looking promising, and I hope we can push on. I have been pleased with our new signings so far, but one or two who have been injured in pre-season are not yet quite there. Still two weeks to go though.

I have been reading a great book on football recently called the numbers game. It's based on the moneyball book about baseball where a team used stats to put a squad together and punch well above their weight The most interesting bit for me in the book is that stats show that keeping a clean sheet in a game earns you far more points on average than scoring a goal and that the first focus of teams should be keeping more clean sheets than adding more goals to a squad. I don't know if Rowett has read that book of course but in the course of a season with or without new strikers we will score goals regardless and if we are keeping plenty of clean sheets that will mean plenty of points I haven't really done the book or the argument justice above but a solid keeper and defence should in itself deliver enough points for playoffs nowadays at least. If we can add a few goals as well it makes automatic a possibility.

I'll have to find and read that book. Interesting that the connection is baseball which is all about runs, runs and more runs. But I'm probably missing the point there. The reason soccer was slow to get going in the USofA was down to it's lack of goals. I'm not sure if that is still true though. Any comment on that Texas? We certainly have the makings of another low GA season, and hopefully the potential to score a few more with the addition of Akins and Beavon, and McGurk settling into his 2nd season here. Someone posted on FB awhile ago a stat that showed us having the most games in League footy with an avg of less than 1.5 goals per game.

peacockbrewer asked - Here is the USA in the 1940-50-60-70 time period boys get baseball gloves for their 10th. birthday rather than a round black/white ball. Why - cause it is the American belief/brag that the USA "invented" the modern game of "baseball" and it is/was thus UN-american to play any other game. Maybe the fact that the round ball needs a "pump" from time to time and any old tree branch/broomstick works as a bat had some influence as well. And yes, watching a baseball game with a score of 1/2-0 is truly a bore. We (USA) are a society of excitement and instant gratification I fear. Thus the baseball rules have generally benefited the batter rather than the pitcher.
