Looks like we need to hope that Peterborough keep their foot on the gas

Extremely helpful result last night where Carlisle clearly like beating struggling teams 1-0 away on a Tuesday night. Thanks for that.
Attention turns now to Vale tonight and you have to hope that the best of Peterborough turn up and not the one that lost 3-1 at home to Carlisle the other week. Don't forget that last nights result will also have given a boost to Vale as well and if, heaven forbid, they won tonight that would be a big step towards safety for them.
As we've said before, we've had some helping hands from teams this season but the question is that in these last 4 games can we help ourselves? Personally i'm not sure whether the players or manager have it in them to turn this round but with games against Cheltenham and Fleetwood left they have to be seen as games to win which may just about be enough.
To some extent last night prolongs the agony but at least it will all be done in two and a half weeks and we can then all forget about this wretched season for a couple of months.

We need a 2-0 home win, losing 1-0 would leave them ahead of us. Peterborough are 2/5, with Vale 11/2 with Sky Bet. Peterborough need to win both games in hand to close the gap on Bolton to 1 point and on Derby to 2.

For me it is just a straight forward question of ‘Can we get a goal from somewhere annable?’ I knew it was going to be tough when we shipped out our experienced strikers in January and brought in kids but not quite as bad as this, where largely we have stopped getting goals from our midfielders and defenders. I don’t think I have ever known such a drought in all of my years watching.

I think the worst ever run for not scoring is actually this season and it’s Cheltenham, who went 10 games without scoring at the start of the season. Somehow we have conspired to try to emulate them, even though we get the odd one.

I don’t think I have ever known such a drought in all of my years watching. Would agree with that 100%. Our attacking plans are woefully inadequate, regardless of who is playing upfront, and you wonder what we do in training all week in terms of formulating a plan. I have studied this quite closely in recent weeks and one of the issues for me is that when defenders get the ball and look for somebody to pass to they look at who is the furthest forward and punt it in their general direction. Rarely does anybody get on the end of it and i'm sure we are playing for long throws and that's it. I know I have banged on about Stephen Quinn in the past but when he signed for us under NC he revolutionised the team and the defenders especially who just looked up and saw him within 5 yards and just gave the ball to him and he moved it forward through midfield. Bucko and McFadzean went from looking like just big lumps to looking like Beckenbaur overnight. We do not have anybody like Quinn now or if we do they are just not being instructed properly. For me I look at other teams such as Barnsley and Oxford and they play the game in a much more simple way than we do with just basic passing and moving with the odd bit of flair in the final third. We just do none of that and that is partly down to player quality but also down to how we have been coached for the last 4 seasons. This was started by JFH, continued by Dino and now being taken on by MP but to a much worse extent than the previous two. The three main centre halves - Hughes, Brayford & Sweeney - who we think of as the best players are the main culprits to be fair. We also see some of our midfielders get the ball with nobody near them and just hook it forward to nobody in particular like the proverbial hot potato. Probably too late for this season to fundamentally change things but I hope that from next season we can just get away from this lump it, survival football and most of all the dreaded long throw!!

For next season I just hope that we sign or recall some forwards who can stick the ball in the net. For me it’s as simple as that. We made a horrendous mistake in January.

walker and gordon didn't look like scoring for us and since they have left they've got 3 goals between them in a cumulative 30 appearances. they weren't the answer either
Stockton was the answer, and although it's league 2, he's got 7 goals in 12 games for Barrow. how we'd love a few of them for us. he was badly managed. maybe he's got a massive ego or is extremely fragile, either way someone (dino?) should have made the team work around Stocktons strengths once he was fit
Peterborough away was a massive case in point. started with 2 up front. looked dangerous. changed it to Stockton up front, lubala out wide, asking Stockton to run the channels, which he can't do, and before you know it they are arguing and we are getting tonked
the key for me is not signing someone to work to Stocktons strengths

The football has been terrible now for a number of years and has gradually got worse under each manager. What is being served up now is the worst the Pirelli Stadium has seen in almost 20 years.
The question I have to ask is though, does Ben want us playing this way? Is longer ball stuff what he prefers? Remember when it comes down to it, he's the boss and what he says goes. He's employed all of the managers, bar Dino who employed himself. Surely conversations about football styles & principles are discussed in meetings, and especially before being offered a job in the interview process.
When MP was interviewed did it go something like this:
Ben: 'As you'll be aware Martin, results of late have been under par, and our performances on the pitch have been terrible, Dino had lost the fans with poor tactical decisions and we feel we need a change, what will you do to try and rectify things?'
Martin: 'I'm going to play the exact same formation, hoof it longer than ever before and continue to play important players out of position Mr Robinson.'
Ben: 'Congratulations, when can you start?'

This is the post that sums up our season exactly.

Giving Peterborough vs Port Vale a watch tonight - Peterborough are some side, very dominant so far but not finding the net just yet. Vale have had one shot and it ended up in Leicestershire...

1-0 Peterborough! Quite an unlucky deflection, Ripley made a good save a few minutes beforehand but could do nothing about that. Well deserved goal for Peterborough, hopefully they can grab a couple more in the second half, they definitely have it in the tank for sure

Back to being level on points and goal difference - Vale ahead of us just on goals scored.

I am delighted- but if we are truly honest we deserve to be in the bottom 4. Which tells you how bad the quality is this season.
