Squad is looking very strong and lots of depth, I suspect given our squad size now that Parker will be leaving and maybe we can rule Edwards out now.

Definitely making some additions in terms of numbers. Quite a few look to be good signings but I’m surprised at this one. For me when he was with us last time and when we played against him he just doesn’t deliver, hopefully he’ll prove me wrong.

Whilst I welcome any new signings this one does feel similar to the Tom O'Connor signing where they are predominantly defensive and can play in a number of positions across the back and also in midfield. I guess until we see them regularly we won't really be able to assess their abilities and what type of player they are and how effective they will be. We also have Mancienne and Wallace when fit in a similar mould.
For me, if we are to make any more signings, whether permanent or loan, I would like to see some natural creativity added although I accept those sorts of players come at a price.
Again, another 2 year contract. Think that's 8 out of 8 permanent signings in addition to those we already have signed up already. Gives good stability to some extent but on the flip side does it use up the budget and leave little room for maneuver in January where we may be looking to refresh the squad. Don't get me wrong, i'm not complaining about signings and lengths of contracts but just an observation in terms of what it could mean in the future in terms of budget flexibility.

Looks like Jimmy may well be looking at trying to create a winning mentality based on a strong defensive unit.

yeah, agreed that a bit more creativity would be nice - but if I remember correctly from last time JFH was here, the game plan was to first off not lose, then secondly to nick a goal and win 1-0. we seemed to do pretty well with that approach

As I see it, my guess is that we will quite possible go with a 4231 which would suggest we have Mancienne, Taylor, Morris, O’Connor and Shaughnessy all vying for the two sitting midfield roles.
We then have Akins, Smith, Powell, Rowe, Patrick and probably Parker contesting the three positions behind Kane or Moult.
Interesting that Jimmy stated towards the end of the season he wanted specialists for most positions but has actually signed some more versatile players who play several positions

Interesting that Jimmy stated towards the end of the season he wanted specialists for most positions but has actually signed some more versatile players who play several positions I've just written that for tomorrow's paper! I note that he says he sees Conor in the middle of the park and has said the same about O'Connor, while it's also Morris's position. Think it's safe to say Edwards and Clare will not be here. The other thing that struck me was him saying he thought Moult and Hemmings would work well together. Is he hinting at two up front? I also wonder if he thinks one defensive mid in front of the back four will suffice now.

Two up top would suggest either 442 or 352 but Jimmy has never, to my knowledge, favoured three at the back and that would mean struggling to get our various wide options involved. 442 relinquishes a lot of control in the middle of the park where most teams play three in there these days. 4132 is an option but doesn’t give much width either.
Interesting times ahead watching the friendlies and seeing how we line up!

Some interesting observations. I had also noted the same as you Colston. I am sure we will be very strong at the back but the squad he has put together gives Jimmy the ability to be able to field different formations depending on the circumstances. Sometimes I guess that will mean 2 up front. I'll trust Jimmy and Dino to get it right more often than not.

I think 4-1-3-2, yes. I think two CDMs was insurance when it was crucial to stop conceding goals. Usually, teams would play one and if he's somebody with the class of Mancienne... that'll do. Although if Taylor proved he could do it (as he did against Crewe last season)... One less CDM allows you a bit more going forward

Just adding to my 1st post, I was really hoping and he still could go down the loan route as we did with Carter and Hughes who we were actually looking to bring in on a permanent before his injury. Conor will do a job I’m sure but the two mentioned are different class and regarding formations they change throughout the game depending on how things are going anyway, it’s having that bit of quality out there to begin with.

I honestly can't see Parker getting a sniff with all these new signings so I still think he might end up leaving on loan/permanent.
Given how much depth we already have it makes you wonder if we will actually loan anybody in!
I'd love to see Carter back, and maybe a quick, young creative type midfielder.

It's a strange one with Parker , if he goes whether on loan or permanent we are left with only Hemmings and Moult as out and out strikers .Should anything happen to one of them , lets hope nothing does , it leaves us short up front , not sure the lad from Carlisle falls into the out and out striker as we havn't seen him play yet. As for Lucas I would rather leave him out wide as he does far better there than up front , in my opinion .

Especially with injuries and suspensions but I suspect we ain’t done yet and the loan market with still be important to us.

Given the EFL stated rules on squad sizes for this season (20 senior players over the age of 21 plus unlimited under 21s) and assuming the PFA don’t get it overturned, as they did with the salary cap, then I doubt we will see either Carter or Hughes back as they would be in the 20 and we already have 20 in that category.
If we are doing loans I suspect it will be under 21s we look to bring in.
