Interesting stuff Colston, I am pleased we have managed to find the budget to sign these players. Every close season their are hundreds of players looking for a contract and going to various clubs on trial and I’d guess that this year there will be 5 times the usual numbers. We may have the opportunity to pick up some extra quality from that pile too.

Final sentence sums it up nicely - this appears to be another stroke of business genius by Ben. I don’t think we are anywhere near to being able to “storm” the league next season and as always, squads generally need to gel. One of Clough’s greatest assets was getting the best out of players who other managers didn’t rate very highly. If Bucko can do the same with these quality additions then it will certainly be an entertaining season - even if we have to watch some of it on an iPad.

I'm thinking part of the reason we are in a good position is we tend not to give out big or expensive contracts to players
Whereas clubs like Lincoln may have more players they were committed to on big money with years left on contracts etc
So as well as being thrifty in other ways we start the new season with less expensive obligations to players meaning we have budget to work with
Lincoln have probably got several players contracted up they would rather not have on money they would rather not pay
We chose not to give Sbarra a new contract for example knowing every penny we commit to has to be for players who will start more matches etc

I had wondered what had been going on at Lincoln with us buying two pretty good players from them. Sort of.
I hadn't thought about long contracts. As we know, most clubs pay their bench warmers more than we pay our big-earners. So there may well be a few players who will be happy about this - they might actually get a game because their club only has a limited number of players.
Other clubs must have MASSIVE problems if Burton Albion can afford players that they can't.

But their other commitments are too big already to offer renewed contracts at a big enough level to these guys Their loss our gain

Lincoln also sacked a substantial number of their long serving administrative staff early on in lock down , much to their supporters disgust. Lincoln City seem to have fallen into that frequently seen mindset that they are a bigger club than they are. They think that if they throw money [which they have not yet earned], they will get success, but we all know that football is not that type of business! Go ask a Rams supporter.

Lincoln have always been a lower league club. Maybe they are blinded by Wigan and Bournemouth, rather than taking notice of Bury and Macclesfield. Not long ago they were non-league. I do understand (and laugh at) the DCFC mentality of 'belonging' in the top flight because at least they've been there before. Although I can't help ending this post with two of my favourite words to describe their record-breaking season. Eleven Points.

Sure, the Cowley brothers were a good management team but there's a reason Lincoln got from the Conference to the League One in only three seasons and now that reason is biting them in the arse. (which is the sort of thing I can write as a fan on a forum but not with my work hat on in an article in the paper!)

Let's not forget as well Nigel being replaced by a player means we have effectively saved a manager's wage (and he would have been om a decent whack)
