Interesting stuff Colston. What is your opinion of Jake the manager, from close quarters? Since he's been a manager, I've had one phone chat with him, much of the contents of which will be in the next article I write; most of this one, to be fair, he's already said to the club and Radio Derby. I got asked a similar question on Facebook by a mate and said this: It’s always impossible to know conclusively and especially in these circumstances. But two things. 1. Ben has always appointed first-time managers and hasn’t got it wrong. 2. A more honest, committed pro than Jake doesn’t exist. Doesn’t guarantee him success but it’s a hell of a good base to go from. I can't claim to know Jake well but I have always been impressed by his commitment and his self-awareness... he knows he's not the tallest centre-half, not the best with the ball at his feet and not the quickest, but he has always compensated for that with hard work. I think there is loads more to Bucko that the "just a simple bloke who tries his best" image he portrays (which is true in itself). A small story. I covered Derby County only once, covering for a colleague's holiday, while Nigel was manager and Jake playing. They were awful and got done 3-1 at home by Reading. Great, I thought, I've got to get an interview from a player who's never met me after a performance like that. I wasn't regularly covering Burton at the time, so I had dug out my dictaphone. One by one, the players shuffled past the press, not making eye contact. I stopped Jake... "yeah, course I'll talk." And the dictaphone battery was flat. I apologised and said I'd have to go back to the press room (it's not close to where the players come out) for my notebook and do it the old fashioned way. "No problem," he said, "I'll be here when you get back." It took me five minutes or so and he wasn't there. I'm thinking "sh*t, I've f*cked up here." Then he came round the corner, apologising, they'd dragged him on to the pitch to do a TV interview. He then gave me one of the very best interviews I have had from any sports person in my very long career. He knew they'd been crap, he didn't like it, he was absolutely determined to put it right... I think that was kind of him, as well as professional. He saw the pickle I'd got into and he helped me out of it. One day soon, at the right moment, I'll remind him about it and thank him again. I'll always be objective in my job, I hope, but, as a fan, I'm on this bloke's side.

As we all know Colston many much better players than Jake, including international stars, have, for varying reasons failed to make it as managers.Conversely, of course, there are plenty of examples of extremely successful managers who hardly caused a ripple as players. So, ultimately, it's a wait & see scenario. He can hardly have picked a worse time to embark on the next stage of his career but let's get behind him & give him all the support we can whatever the future may bring. Power to your elbow Jake.

Jake has always looked for life after playing even at Mansfield, he got a right bashing of some when he signed for Derby after all the money the club had spent on players before Clough. here was a clown from non=league, he went on to captain the club was a player from 2009 until 2017 and left the club a legend. Just another typical clough Signing, stella

I came across Bucko running through Stretton immediately after a game last season and thought odd. He wasn't quite up to speed to claim a place back in the squad although over his injury. I mean who would go for a run amongst the fans leaving a game, well Bucko did, may do all the time for all I know? Mind you Cloughie use to take the squad training on Darley park in Derby, my mate bless him (now departed from this world) just had to turn the corner from his home to see his favorite team in training when walking his dog.

Two thoughts on Bucko's appointment.... 1) Does he need an experienced assistant? (If so John Brayford or Dan Robinson aren't going to fit the bill? 2) (maybe it's the same point) Simon Clough had a key role in recruitment I believe.....and Kevin Summerfield during Gary Rowett's time And recruitment is a key element of producing a good team.... I imagine Bucko can handle the motivation, coaching and tactics of the team - how we play etc etc but unearthing the bargain gems.....? He'll need some assistance I'm sure...

As far as I know I don’t think Kevin Summerfield got a gig anywhere after Rowett got the sack at Derby because Gary changed his coaching staff. I’d be delighted to have Kevin back here and he’d benefit Bucko’s development no end.

My main concern about Jake is not his motivational and coaching abilities but his scouting ability and where he will find the players. There's no doubt about it that Nigel and his team were masters at maximising the loan market(great relationships with the big Prem clubs), scouring the Scottish market for the hidden gems and also getting the best from experienced players coming to the end of their careers for various reasons. That will have been something that has been built up from years of experience and clearly Jake will not have that on day one unless he gets some expert help.
It will be interesting to see who he tries to keep from the current squad where in my opinion it would be good to try and keep as many of the current squad together for continuity although with the loans and contracts expiring that could be a difficult one.

Would Shaun Barker be a good shout for assistant? I agree about Kevin Summerfield - the brains behind the Rowett era. And what about David Oldfield now at Oxford City?

That's a very good one to consider, depending on what he's doing now. Also depends on if they want to fill that position, Andy Garner is most likely that person ATM but for how long?

My immediate thought was Shaun Barker as well. As of now he's mentor (and coach) for the 16s to 18s I've read somewhere that staff may need to do more than one job though. And our lack of numbers will likely mean more of our 16s to 18s will be stepping up to the first team squad than ever

He’d be brilliant with the lads in the dressing room and the perfect foil for Bucko.
