So nigel would have left in the summer anyway.
Sad but inevitable in view of the financial reality of League One. Seems tha Man City money enabled a few playing contracts to be extended and the management team to stay together another season.
But no doubt at all in my mind the extent of his gesture now, it saves a number of other jobs in the club. At least for now.

What more can I say that hasn’t already been said. Absolutely gutted. A very very sad day . Nothing against Jake. This guy has all the attributes to make it in football management but it does seem he’s really got his work cut out here. Thanks Nige for everything. You are an absolute genius and hero in my book. Good luck Jake I’m sure your in for a roller coaster of a ride but spending so much time with Nige over the years is going to be of massive benefit.

Thanks for everything Nigel and all the best for your next job whenever and wherever that will be. All the best for Jake too, Nigel would have been a difficult act to follow at the best of times so even more so during these difficult times. I think next season will be very interesting and not just for our club too. At least we know the club is run well financially so this will stand us in good stead over the next few seasons. Whilst I really think some clubs could struggle to survive I don’t think we’ll fall into that category at least.

Sad day for the club and everyone who follows the Brewers. Always thought Clough may give a bigger club another go if given the opportunity, which you can’t blame him for. He’s been fantastic at Burton with his calm approach over many years and I hope he does well where ever that may be.
Good luck to Jake who will hopefully find his feet quickly and keep us in this Division. Just a bit worried about what further changes could be made in terms of players and what team we will end up putting out!

looks like Ben told him the club couldn't afford to pay them and Nige has made it easy for him and stepped down.Fair play well done Nige and thanks. This may be one of the saddest posts ever put on this forum. Very Very sad Sinfin but we will look back in years to come no matter what league we are in and think well at least we have a football club to follow. This gesture from Nigel sums him up for what he is a loyal, honest hard working man who any chairman in any industry would want around them.

Not unexpected. One can only bang their head against a wall for so long. He's done a fantastic job with limited funds The pathetic dwindling home support was the last straw.
Hopefully he'll get a chance to show his capabilities with a decent bit of cash to play with.

His time at Burton Albion has run its course, climbing a mountain takes it toll, when he came back for the second time he knew it was a poisend chalice. But still took it on and getting into the Championship and a league cup semi final leaving the Brewers in league 1 with 5 seasons and many fantastic memory's on his return to the club. Burton Albions foundation is what the club is built on, and Nigel has been a big part of that . My programs are full of make believe Leeds== Derby==Aston Villa==Newcastle==Birmingham== Fulham==Forest=Sheff Wed==etc thought it then, think it now, never to be seen again. Man City league cup semi final, yes all seen at the Pirelli Stadium . The only down side was the fan base made it impossible to maintain fiances needed to be competitive at such a high level in the game. But boy did we give it a go. This virus is changing the world we live in. Well done Nigel with his staff for fulfilling something i never dreamed off. Ben Robinson deserved this journey, and now with Buxton we try to hang on to league 1 football. Still climbing Mountains

The Cough era has unfortunately come to an end, but in a way that makes me proud to support this magnificent football club. Nigel has fallen on his sword for the clubs long term future and concludes the magical story with a fitting end. We all need to move forward into what is going to be a very difficult and stormy future for the whole of English football. Some of the comments on here do not appear to see the bigger future, namely that league football will never be the same again. Before Covid 19 we were already seeing increased financial instability with long established clubs limping from one financial crisis to another. The constant change of ownership of clubs by dubious supposed billionaires and dodgy consortia which fleece the club and then disappear or virtually bankrupt the clubs. Burton Albion are a model for how league football clubs should be run. That was the case before the pandemic and even more so going forward. It will not be long before we start hearing that clubs with long and illustrious histories are in dire financial trouble. There will not be the queue of millionaire business owners waiting to bail them out because they will be trying to bail out their own businesses. We will come through this and as always, in Ben we trust. COYB

Had to laugh at this.
A football finance expert on social media was asked if our situation set a precedent for what may be coming for a lot of clubs in the EFL.
The reply?
“Unlikely. Most club owners think integrity is a promising right back that they’ve been linked with in Argentina.”
@kieranmaguire on Twitter. He’s a good ‘un.

This may be contentious but I feel it needs saying. Does it feel to anyone else that yesterday we pretty well crashed back to non-league level? Maybe to build again for the future?

I must expand my vocabulary for I have run out of superlatives to describe our football club and Nigel Clough. Disappointing news but typical of the man and if any chairman and board can steer us through these difficult times it is Ben and co. Jake starts a new chapter in our history in what is surely to be much different to what we knew before. I have every confidence in those concerned and really looking forward to next season albeit it is likely to be a game of two halves re attending.
It would be nice to have the chance to say thank you to Nigel and the team, what a fantastic journey we have all been on. If there are any chairman out there with sense they will look to give him and his team a job. That said the flaw in that sentence is “sense”.

I am sure Nigel will go on and be a real success somewhere. The skills he honed at Burton and the miracles he worked, will be very much in demand now in a game without money.

Optimistically, I still believe others have further to fall and will make that fall. I hope we are gearing up for a new reality in football, one without ridiculous expectation, and that our club will be more ready for it than others. We couldn't ask to go back to non-league level and build again without actually declaring ourselves bust and coming back as "AFC Burton Albion" or something. I hope it doesn't come to that.

What sort of structure do you envisage Colston. Maybe a full time league 1 and the survivors/bigger players in the National League replacing those who aren’t able to continue in the league?
