D] Didnt apply ourselves==E] are struggling at present====back to basics goalkeeping [tick]===Defence-Buxton [slow and injured, nearing retirement] O"Toole [slow and learning central defence] Wallace [ a utility player not a experienced central defender] Nartey Central defenders weak== central midfield- Quinn [excellent but age is against him ] Wallace, [some say his best position] [Tick] Centre forward, Boyce [good all round player ] Akins [good player ], So for me defence is our weakness to the spine of our team. could be why we ship in goals Left full back,we haven't got one========Right full back Brayford, age and fitness a problem..both these positions covered by Akins leaving our attack weak. Midfield Fraser good on the ball, Sbarra and Edwards not physical or tall enough to control midfield, looks pretty, but no end result.more aggression needed. Wingers Broadhead Sarkic Templeton, have skill on the ball, and can do a job, problem Templeton is injury prone. So for me a new year gift, 1 central defender==1 6ft plus midfield attack minded player,1 quality full back, Boyce new contract or gone,if so another Lucas Akins OUt =Bywater=Daniel=Buxton=Edwards= Boyce new contract or gone===4 inn===4 out== Strengthen====central defence==full back==midfield- big striker if Boyce fails to sign new contract, or new striker instead of BoyceBlimey Trev. You know I like you a lot but you're being a bit harsh lately. We are a better team and squad than our current position suggests. Maybe it's pure blind faith from me AGAIN but I think we'll turn the corner soon. Yeah it's frustrating but you're writing off too many of our lads too soon. If we finish this season as strongly as we finished last well still be on for a lot of excitement.

Blind faith broomo, goals shipped in Portsmouth=Tranmere=Doncaster=Mansfield-Salford=Fleetwood, no excuses, goalkeeper==central defence==central midfield= striker= base of the spine, and for me central defence is our weakest point, Name the last time we saw a game out like Mansfield did to us 6 minutes injury time and they looked totally in control. We can judge if we are a better team, Salford cup and then Peterborough and Sunderland, should test our defence. or lack of it. Our talisman Buxton is not fit,and i dont see any other experienced central defender, our only other hope Nartley is a novice at this level and injury prone. So for me Jan could be a very important month. for a top ten finish.

This is why I love this forum Trevor and love football in general. We all have very different views. For me the weakest part of the team is when we reach the final third of the pitch. It’s absolutely scandalous the amount of chances we miss.

Bloody hell Trevor that’s a bit harsh, a bit on the attack! Not like you?
The title of the thread is “Are we a nearly team or a really team………………………
I think we are an “if only team” and probably an “if only “ club and will always be.
You know as well as most of us Trevor we can’t just ship players in and out that easily for reasons well debated over the years on here.Even if you are correct.
If we win our games in hand we’re in the play offs……….that will do me, all you need in a season is a bit of hope or to be in with a shout……………to get better than that we need luck as well because we don’t have the resources others do.

I have no qualms about our limited resources. and thinking of playoffs not on my radar, i am with you top ten with hope keeps the season alive. Melymoss is correct in how wasteful we are in the final third, but in my view if we play on the front foot,we are open to the counter attack. and Set plays .and we need stand out central defenders, we all know a team is a jigsaw puzzle, and you look for the right pieces. Buxton -Nartey-O"Toole-Wallace. looking at our recent results is not working,2 out of the 4 have been missing, leaving us weak at the back, And Mansfield shown us the flaws. it was a poor showing lacking in pace, and poor defending from set pieces, i cannot see Nigel putting up with this, and his next transfer window,i believe will define our season..

I do honestly see where your coming from Trev. You could well be right because of our openness to attack we do leave ourselves open at the back. Maybe we should look at strengthening our defence and playing not to lose but we still would struggle to score goals. I just think the players we have we are an exciting team we just lack a striker that’s hungry to score goals. The amount of balls that we put across the face of the opposition goals a hungry striker would lap it up. The transfer window will certainly be an interesting one .

If you think about it, the league must be quite equal in terms of quality and ability. The top 2 and the play off spaces has seen a quite considerable turnover all season.
Rotherham are top now and I am sure that they were below us not so long ago. I am sure Peterborough were a top a few weeks ago and they are a point and one place above us today.
Ipswich were top for ages and looked like they would run away with it. Had they not won yesterday they would have been 2 points ahead of us.
Wycombe looked like they were going to run away with it and they are wobbling now.
Blackpool, Fleetwood, Doncaster, Oxford and Coventry have all been there or thereabouts. Lincoln were top at the start of the season.
There is no reason why we can't make that top 6.

As was pointed out to me yesterday, win Tuesday and we hit a play off spot. Only saying to my OH this morning (she sometimes listens to me when I talk football) all the gloom and doom from some fans and the stay aways....who and where are ya?

26/10/2019 was the last time we kept a clean sheet in a league game, and looking at our defending is a priority and the age plus injury issues must come into play. We have Daniel-Buxton-O"Toole-Brayford all over 30+.we now have Hutchinson-Hart=Wallace=Shaughnessy-Anderson-Nartey,plus Fox on the mend. Perhaps Nigel thinks we should stick
