At least we now know the news on Marvin. It's obviously been a tough few months for him that hopefully is easing now. Three or so weeks ago, it looked good. Now with Jamie, Marcus, Marvin and Ben Fox out, it is worrying again. With very young players being a significant portion of the squad, we need at least two more additions. With injuries, I hope NC doesn't cancel the Chesterfield game. What do others think?

I don’t think Marvin’s retirement is a big surprise to NC as he hasn’t been mentioned at all in pre season . It’s obviously something that has been ongoing sometime so Marvin was never in this seasons plans. Yes I do agree though we do need at least another couple of signings. I’m sure at least one will arrive before next Saturday ( fingers crossed anyway ) . We have until the 2nd September to finalise our squad but obviously the sooner we get them in the better.

I think Nigel has clearly said he wanted to bring in 3 more and Ryan Edwards is the first. It looks like we have done a really good deal in selling Marcus and I don’t doubt we will have a decent squad by the end of the transfer window. Don’t panic Mr Mainwaring.

I didn't think he'd come back into the fray given recent events, but with him now off the books that has freed us up around £2500 a week in wages. I think we need 3, maybe 4 signings. A tall commanding centre half is imperative for me, the one a few days ago fell through. Another winger & striker to replace Marvin/Marcus, plus Templeton is injured again, and another option in midfield although that's not quite as important at the minute after signing Edwards.

Just to add yes Jamie Allen has gone but John Joe O’toole and Ryan Edwards have been brought in. We lost Bradley Collins but brought in O’hara. Replaced McFadzean with Richard Nartey. We still need to replace Marcus and probably someone to cover Brayf but other than that I think we’re in pretty good shape.

I think that we are in an extremely healthy place at the moment and I feel much more optimistic than I did this time last season. It felt to me like there was a huge cloud hanging over the club last summer (though that might just have been my imagination). It wasn't a post relegation gloom, it felt much deeper than that. Now I feel it is like when a storm has passed and the air is fresh. The feel good factor that existed is returning.
Extra signings will arrive and they will be ones to get excited about.

Thanks for your replies. I just don't want us to repeat last season whereby we lost the first three and couldn't fill the bench. Panic definitely. I apologise. 😁

You're not alone in the worry department. Yes I trust Nigel to sort us, but I cannot understand why the windows close 3 weeks after the season starts. This gives clubs like ours serious problems in balancing the players we are trying to keep, and getting loans over the line.

I've not really been reading the local news, only keeping up on here and on Facebook. You seem pretty certain of the wages freed up by Marvin there Fred, have you got a bit of an inside track or has it been in the papers? Also has there been an article where NC said we we're in for a tall centre half but it fell through? I avoid the DET as it takes too long to click through the ads. If you've got a link I'd love to read it, DET or any other. Cheers.

Sure we are a few short, but Marvin has not been involved and his early retirement with a negotiated settlement will still cost the club. But it should give some financial benefit. It seems Nartey has took a few knocks, and hamstrings can take time to heal. Templeton with his style of play attracts contact and during his career he must have had a lot of injuries, for O"toole--Sbarra--Edwards. Wallace=this is a big season. and With 6 academy Hutchinson=Anderson=Hart=Morley=Vale=and Fox a long term injury.it seems we could do with a bit of quality. Macfadzene=Harness=Allen yes 1 central defender 1 attacker and we can start

I think the club have done some real good financial business in the summer to date and if the fee for Marcus is to be believed I.e. £1m plus(and don't forget that figure came out via Pompey sources) as well as losing the wages of Fadz, Allen and Sordell then I think that puts us in a decent position to be able to push the boat out a little( by our standards) with the next few signings.
Yes, there is only one week to go before the start of the season but I would be surprised if there were not a couple of incoming signings during the next week.
I firmly believe the club have put themselves in a good position and we just need those extra 2/3 quality signings before the end of the window and we will be looking good.

Didn't say if he was tall or a centre back.... But shows how difficult and important it can be getting the players you want.... We might need 2 strikers if Boycie goes.... Good ones don't grow on trees..... 😉

It pigs me off that the window ends into the season. I remember last season Nigel saying that the top clubs wait until the first round of the league cup is played before they let a player go out on loan so we don't get up and running with a full squad until a few games in. When at the end of the season every point counts it's important we are firing on all cylinders on day one.

Aren't we back with Premier League dates?

Interestingly, the bookies have us to finish joint sixth with Lincoln, with Sunderland, Portsmouth, Ipswich, Peterborough and Rotherham above us. Last Saturday's opponent Chesterfield, are favourites for the National League, confirming that our performance was a good one. We still need two or three players though, as we all seem to agree.

Looking at our style of play on the front foot,Nardley especial for the early part of the season could be light weight against some tall bruising characters. Last night Anderson was brushed aside when chasing a through ball and dealing with high crosses critical. Their are some quality forwards who have learned their craft in this league and some big clubs that can pay the wages. Our defense is over 30, and while Buxton is good in the air he lacks pace for the through ball. without a spine we could be in trouble, with one a very good team==quality=goalkeeper==central defender= defensive midfield =striker. Goalkeeper-not tested==Central defender-not tested=Defensive midfield fine=Striker fine. Problem Bywater=Hawkins not good enough. O:hara young and not experienced ,so my only call no backup. Central defender Buxton may well get injured, Even with Brayford stepping in it leaves us vulnerable.it is hard to ask a young lad who has not completed pre -season to become our rock.in league 1, when this year is the strongest it has ever been. So money spent on a quality central defender would not be wasted .Good news in Clough i trust

I hope a few more will be pleased like Matlock Brewer and it puts a few on the gate. I don’t know if Royston will travel as far as Eastleigh.
