Couldn't make it today as that evil mistress known as work reared it's ugly head.
Saw the goals on Sky. Lovely little chipped pass through from Nasser for Akins goal. I've got a feeling that Nasser might make the kind of impact Kee did when he first came here. A handful of cameo apperances and then a dozen or so games where he really hits form and shows his ability. Not that I'm putting him under any pressure, mind.
Speaking of Kee, I wonder if he can do his old club a favour on Tuesday night...?
Onwards and upwards.

We played ok considering that some players are finding their way back to fitness, SCS and Lenny, and Akins but I thought he was close to being back to his old self. It was good to see Jimmy back on the bench. I thought Nasser was excellent for the 15 mins he got and was a crucial part of our 2nd goal...Beavs was my MOTM by a country mile, and probably Gurks was next best (calero was better than Tuesday but he's not ready for 1st team action for me, he has obvious skill but is far too timid for L2). I would like to see Nasser given a start.
But, we could have easily lost that game, they missed two sitters and we handled twice in our box, though Akins' was cancelled out by their offside. Thrilled that we got 3 points but we were lucky. We need Maynard back in the midfield, and then Matty. We need to relax on the ball and get back to playing more on the floor.

Difference of opinion then?
Were we lucky or did we win comfortably?

Difference of opinion then? Were we lucky or did we win comfortably? I'm thinking you were not at the game observer? Don't get me wrong we scored 2 vg goals, fantastic shot from Damo and an equally fantastic save by their keeper but Gurks was there to head in the rebound, again. And then a nice play by Nasser to beat his marker, break down the wing and feed Akins for the second. But they missed 2, maybe 3, sitters that silenced the Pirelli. Then a shot from them hit Damos' (I think, maybe Shane's) outstretched arm in the box. That's a pen, unnatural position. Later Akins handled the ball above his head in our box but their player was judged offside when the ball was kicked. Don't expect anyone to agree with any of that, but for me we were a bit lucky today (or maybe they were unlucky). But you need a bit of luck sometimes.

We had 10 shots to their 7, 5 on target to their 3, 8 corners to their 2. They had a lot of possession particularly towards the end but I'd have guessed that JFH was much the happier manager. I thought we played very well.

I agree mikey, we were the better side by a country mile. Yes they had chances but then again so did we and we had more. Our goalkeeper did not have a save to make, theirs did. How is it any way relevant that Akins handled the ball? There was an offside, the 'handball' therefore didn't happen. The fact he was being pushed and pulled is irrelevant as well.
It did remind me very much of the kind of win we had under the previous manager.
Calero find fine for me, grew into the game, not MOM, but looked like he did have that quality that will unlock defences, I think he will start the next game. Pass from Nasser was sublime and he does have a bit about him. I think Spence may have a good punt there.
I think it was Damo for the other 'handball' and I would have given it too.
At the end of it all though, we had to grind it out a bit (no complaints from me about that way of playing).

I thought we were definitely the better side but that doesn't always mean you win and Oxford came to try and play football, although they were also a very dirty and niggly bunch.
Whing and the number 3 who's name escapes me were both very lucky to remain on the park and a couple of others including Hylton, who constantly insisted on picking up the ball and having childish hissy fits, when we were correctly awarded free kicks or throws, should have been dealt with early in the game.
Lots of positives to come out of the game; McGurk just keeps hetting better and is like having a new player, Mousinho was outstanding yet again, and several others put in a good shift, particularly Lucas, who was to my mind was played out of position all game?
Can't understand why we would play Akins out of position just to suit Calero, a month long loanee but he stuck to his job and was duly rewarded with a very well taken late goal.
Calero MOM...never in a million years...was it a phone vote from Steve McLaren? Mousinho or Beavon again for me.
Still, the league table makes much better reading this morning, with five points separating 2nd and 3rd. Luton will undoubtedly drop more points, hopefully three to us when we visit Kenilworth Road but as always, it remains in our own hands and I truly believe Shrewsbury will also drop points, possibly in an unexpected game?
Hope we're not left bemoaning the stupid winner we gifted them at the New Meadow??? COYB!

Calero must have a clause saying he has to play x amount of minutes/games. I'll keep saying it, I'd like Nasser to be given a start. Yeah, Moose was a rock again as usual. Moving he and Robbie further back was a spot o genius from JFH and has changed our game.

I was impressed by Nasser - he looked to have the capability to play at a higher level than League 2.

An interesting interview with JFH on the Football League Show - he certainly felt it was one of our best performances. I'm glad for him as he took us on when it could easily have gone pear shaped.

I wonder if Alex is starting to doubt his decision? Depends how much they're paying him. It might have been too good an offer to turn down. I appreciate we may be in a higher league than Oxford next season but he could still be on substantially more money in league 2 playing for Oxford than he would ever be in league 1 playing for us. I also think that with a better manager they'd be fighting for promotion with that squad. Don't rate Appleton at all. Never have. I've a feeling they'll get rid as soon as they're mathematically out of contention for the play offs and bring in someone for a real tilt at promotion next season. It may seem like a strange decision on the face of it but give it a year or two. I think young Alex will be proved right.

I can't agree with hardly any of it. Sure on occasions they looked dangerous, and I did not think they were rubbish at all, (as someone said). Overall though I can not remember them troubling our goalkeeper too much. Regarding penalties, if the decision is ball to hand then that is not a penalty, no matter where the hand is. Your so called unatural position, does not mean the arm has to be at your side. Try jumping for a ball or making a sliding tackle with your arms always by your side.

Anybody see any trouble after the game? Apparently one of our stewards was winding the away fans up and had a bit of a stand off. I think if they lose to Mansfield they may be on the search for a new manager.
