Is anyone else worried that we haven't started any better than we finished last season? Scoring goals was never the problem but conceding them always has been. So far we are conceding an average of two goals a game... A new back four still conceding from set pieces just like the old? And everyone in the box for set pieces again? Backing off out of the midfield and giving it up in the second half? Big boot football when you can see playing it forward gives us better results? Let's look at the record - 4 wins, 7 losses, 1 draw in the league. 22 goals scored 24 conceded in 12 league games in charge. And Albion still can’t play two good halves of football together let alone two games. All of these problems are two or three seasons old. All of these problems cost Peschisolido his job. And Rowett was part of the regime who lead us to the verge of relegation twice. So I ask you - have we got the wrong man for the job? And if you think he's the right man for the job where's the proof? No, jog on and troll elsewhere

Yeah, we are junk this season, any fool can see that. We play THREE (3) Championship sides and beat them. What a bad team this year ! Any fool can see there is no improvement. GR hit the road Mate, your pants.
the above is SARCASM did I spell that right?

I don't believe all this pessimism. It's stupid to consider last seasons results with this season, when there are so many changes. Yes, I am concerned about the goals so far being conceded, but we beat Sheffield U. on penalties away from home, and last night we beat Leicester away from home 4 2. Sorry about the two goals we conceded, but we were playing a championship side. Last Saturday we ran the game in the second half and created most of the chances, but lost to a free kick, (which I admit we are too prone to). But GR is well aware of the situation and I believe given a little time will sort things out with his new squad. For crying out loud, give the team a break. I suggest you keep your fears under your hat for at least the first 10 league games.

Is anyone else worried that we haven't started any better than we finished last season? With two of our strikers only half fit, not worried at all. Scoring goals was never the problem but conceding them always has been. So far we are conceding an average of two goals a game... I'd argue that scoring goals was a problem. In the past, when our strikers didn't score, nobody else chipped in. That's improved no end so far this season. A new back four still conceding from set pieces just like the old? And everyone in the box for set pieces again? I'm prepared to give a new defence a chance to bed in and get accustomed to each other. So far I'm very encouraged. Aren't you? Backing off out of the midfield and giving it up in the second half? I've only seen two games this season in person, but when you're six goals up in one game I'd say you've earned the right to back off. Big boot football when you can see playing it forward gives us better results? Like I say, I've only seen the two games this season, but I didn't see much big boot football to Kee, Richards or Yussuf. Let's look at the record - 4 wins, 7 losses, 1 draw in the league. 22 goals scored 24 conceded in 12 league games in charge. Last season GR inherited a team. It wasn't his. Fact. Judge him on this season. But if you insist on criticising him for perhaps having a say in some of the bad signings in the past, why not applaud him for perhaps having a say in some of the good signings? And Albion still can’t play two good halves of football together let alone two games. We beat Winbledon 6 - 2 and were very unlucky to lose to Fleetwood. I'd be more than happy to see us play like that all through the season. You wouldn't? All of these problems are two or three seasons old. All of these problems cost Peschisolido his job. And Rowett was part of the regime who lead us to the verge of relegation twice. Whatever part GR had in the previous regime, any decisions would ultimaltely have been made by the previous manager. Between them, they looked over the precipice of relegation, but collectively then individually, they then he found a way to keep us up. All that's in the past now. GR has recognised the need for improvement, and by and large he seems to have found the personnel to deliver that improvement. Man for man, can you argue against any of his signings compared to the previous incumbents? Is Diamond better than James? Holness better than Austin? McCrory better than Webster? O'Connor better than Corbett? Weir better than McGrath? Bell better than Bolder? No disrespect to those mentioned who are still in the squad who have served us well and will again when called upon, but competition for those players was needed, sought and found. So I ask you - have we got the wrong man for the job? And if you think he's the right man for the job where's the proof? I rest my case as above.

Rowett ought to get his finger out and get Billy Kee to sign a new 3 year contact. Oh, hang on...

Lets see after 10 league games, what position the club are in the table? The hysteria after winning 2 league games by some is is laughable,a lazy appointment and some lazy signings which after a few games,he has benched is so called improved keeper from last season.

OK, against my better judgement, you've captured my attention. How about enlightening the 90-odd per cent of us who don't see it how you see it? Explain which of the signings are "lazy". If you're right, then I guess you're saying the signings are lesser players than the ones they've replaced; that is, Holness worse than Austin, Diamond worse than James, Weir worse than Bolder... to name three examples. I'm not saying you're wrong. I'd like you to explain in what way you're right....

Colston, I think you may have misread E.D's post. part of which was:
"GR has recognised the need for improvement, and by and large he seems to have found the personnel to deliver that improvement. Man for man, can you argue against any of his signings compared to the previous incumbents?"
I think that means he/she is supporting GR's changes.
To these 6 Q's I give 6 yes'es. Is Diamond better than James? Holness better than Austin? McCrory better than Webster? O'Connor better than Corbett? Weir better than McGrath? Bell better than Bolder?
FFS, Betty would have been better than James, he cost us so many goals. I'm liking McCrory more every game.

I woudn't say they were lazy signings. 8 of the starting 11 at Rochdale were Rowett's signings and it was one of the most competent, professional displays in the league from a Burton Albion team for a long while. Defence was solid, midfield worked their arses off and we had two big skillful lads up front who put themselves about. I actually remember saying the same thing after we beat Crewe 1-0 at home last season.
As for seeing where we are after 10 games...we had 16 points after 10 games last season, we were sitting 4th in the table, we'd just beaten Swindon 2-0, no-one was moaning and look what happened. The moral of the story is football is predictably unpredictable.

I personally couldn't believe it when Rowett got the job. I had to wonder if it was a show of faith or just a lack of ambition - or even a question of the board keeping their hands in their pockets. Look at the clubs to have gone up over the last couple of years, you need to spend out to go up. So naturally you also need to spend to stay up. It's not too early to question the results - take the cup run out and it's not a pretty picture. I'd give him until the FA Cup first round - if league performances haven't improved by then it's probably not going to change. If you leave it too late then it could be a lost cause.

I've not posted on here before (yes I do need to register) and personally, I don't think the previous post deserves a response but anyway....
Yes, we could spend more money on the team and try to buy short term success - Crawley have managed it, Fleetwood are trying it (and have managed it given their impressive rise up through non-league). However, other clubs have also tried it (see Rushden and Diamonds as one example, another is Bradford trying to compete in the Premier League not that long ago) and everytime when the money runs out (and it will run out at some stage) the club plummets back down the league and/or completely disapears.
The Brewers success over the last 10-15 years has (as far as I understand) been built on slow steady development, spend what you can afford, manage carefully, aim high but don't panic if the targets aren't quite met.
When I first started watching the Brewers (it quickly turned into supporting(obsessing if you believe my wife)) in the Doc Martins League, the football league was miles away, as a destination it wasn't even on the horizon - promotion from into the Conference was brilliant but I don't remember thinking we'd make it into the league, staying up was enough. As the team progressed, ambitions slowly increased but we were competing against (some) much bigger clubs still without spending beyond our means, promotion to the League was just as good, if not better, than promotion from the Unibond. And now, we're in the League, not without a few scares but we're here and doing ok. Burton is a small club aiming as high as we dare and promotion is and should always be the aim, but the reality is mid-table obscurity for a few seasons would be fine.
As for the manager, I quite like Gary Rowett and the players/staff he has brought in. To be honest, I quite liked Peschisolido too but somehow he never filled me with confidence. I'm convinced there isn't a lack of ambition at the club, but the ambition that is there is for Burton Albion to build slowly and still be in business in 5,10,50 years time (when the likes of Crawley may well have fallen back down the leagues). Hopefully Rowett is the right man for the job but we'll have to see (just like with any other new manager).
The team may not be setting the world alight but the run in the cup has been brilliant (a last minute decision to drive to Leicester was definitely a good one). In the league we've played 3 away (against the promotion favorites and two relegated teams) and two at home (one against a 'big spending' newly promoted promotion favorite), two wins out of five isn't great but it's not bad either.
I'm still hoping for promotion this season, a couple more good cup wins would be nice too but will settle for a not great but not bad season. And I'll see you all back at the Pirelli next season, and the season after etc... whatever league we're in!
PS Sorry, that went slightly off topic (and turned into an essay) - in summary is Rowett the right man for the job? - I think he could be and hopefully he is.

Len, those sentiments entirely match mine; they match those of (almost) everyone I happen to know who supports the club; they certainly match those of the chairman (in the course of my job I've talked to him about it enough to say that with confidence). I suspect they match those of a very large majority, most of whom may not even know this forum exists. I completely subscribe to the view that everyone's entitled to their opinion; I completely agree with those who say they're broadly in favour of what's happening but reserve the right to criticise. I've disagreed with one or two (Mikey for instance) but I know he's a real fan and a good bloke. Thanks for a superb outbreak of common sense!

My thoughts exactly len. I started following the Brewers when we were lucky to get 250 through the gates, and as you say League football wasn't even a dream. Ok we aren't running through the leagues as some would wish and expect, but the slow & steady progress has served the club well in getting us to where we are now.
I would certainly rather take it slower to have the prolonged success rather than a couple of quick promotions then back into obscurity when the cash dries up.
As has been said we have already played mainly the favourites for promotion, and ok, looked a bit of way off them, but the team are turning the corner I believe and the next few games will hopefully show that we are ready to compete with teams who will be fighting out for the playoffs towards the end of the season.

I completely agree Len I have supported the Albion from the first match at Wellington St. and I am pleased with the progress we have made. I think Gary has made some very good signings without breaking the bank and wish him well.

Well spoken Len. As Colston also repeats, your sentiments represent all that the vast majority of supporters feel. Gary Rowett as our manager was exactly the right decision taken by Ben Robinson for this football club, in the hope of continuing steady progress. He has still to fully prove himself, but his integrity, and reading of any given situation, shines through, and how he responds is absolutely sound. Also the team he has to support him, particulary our Assistant Manager, compliments the team set up. Yes, everone is entitled to their opinion, just as I am entitled to call some of those opinions completely stupid. Len please register, we need a more responsible and level headed people like you contributing.
