Admire your optimism. I think it's the manner of the defeat that hurt the most. Lost at home to a championship team and we would not be so bothered.

Well that certainly didn’t go to plan !!! I’ve said all season missed chances are the biggest problem and again today we showed we’re not good enough in the opposition’s penalty area. For me the worrying trend is over the past few weeks we’ve started conceding far to many goals and like last season we’re suddenly not good enough in both penalty areas again. One thing that has surprised me on here nobody has mentioned Scott Frazer’s performance today. I judge every player equally on each performance for each individual game and although I am a big fan today he was bloody awful. I think we had the answer is he staying or going. It’s sad because I am a fan and I don’t like to directly criticise players but he had no interest in that game today. After that I’ll be astounded if he is still a Burton player after the window shuts. Not good enough in either penalty area and a midfielder that didn’t want to be on the pitch spells disaster and unfortunately that’s what we saw today. I am a big Scott fan but on that performance it does look as though his heads been turned so hopefully the deal will be done ASAP and we move on.

Northampton did a job on us today. Their manager said after the game that defensively they worked all week on their shape and discipline without the ball. Attacking then plan A was to knock it up to the big lad and pick up the pieces and plan B was more of the same.
Melymoss - Scott didn’t have a great game today but we passed comment on the number of times that he had the ball and was immediately closed down by two or three Northampton players. They knew he was the biggest threat and nullified him out of the game in my opinion.

The last thing I want to do Ian is sound as though I’m criticising one player. It was a poor performance and yes your right Northampton did do a job on us. I respect your views very much and I hope I’m wrong and Scott does sign a new contract and he stays with us. Maybe I’m being very unfair if so I’ll hold my hand up. I just thought he looked very disinterested. If he moves on good luck to him and I hope he’s a revelation for whoever he signs for. Just very bitterly disappointing. We really could have done with the prize money to help to push us on but when has Nigel had it easy in football management ?

No problem with your post Melymoss. I respect your posts to be fair as well. Just a different perspective on why Scotty had such a low key game based on what I and those around me saw. Also, thinking about it, Scott has played all of the Christmas games and put a huge amount of effort in. I know in some games he has been subbed towards the end to get a bit of a break but as a box to box midfielder has probably expended more energy than most. Perhaps there was an element of tiredness in there as well today. I suspect the truth lies somewhere between what we have both thought. I have no idea what the future holds with Scott. In the words of Kevin Keegan - 'I would just love it, love it' if Scott signs a new contract but I honestly have no idea what January holds for us. Probably the most disappointing thing from today is missing the opportunity to pick up the prize money and a potentially lucrative fourth round tie. Nothing against Northampton but I hope they get a really uninspiring tie in the next round against a Millwall or a QPR just so we don't feel quite so bad about missing out! Only concern is that our January business may be influenced by what happened today. NG - I cannot take the credit for Nightwish going on the playlist today at all!

They looked like they wanted it more than us I’m afraid, cup defeats don’t bother me like league defeats anymore but I’m very disappointed we won’t be getting the extra prize money as that could’ve massively increased our chances of keeping Fraser and Boyce.
Do have a feeling it could be quite a bad month now in terms of results and transfer deals but hopefully I’m wrong.

F=A cup day once more and we are still in it,i can feel the excitement around the area, i think most are thinking of the summer Holiday. Here we are at home against League 2 Northampton Town currently sitting in 7th, and the away following about 1-400, what a way to spend Sun Afternoon chasing a cup shock in Stafford-shire. They play their home games at Sixfields Stadium capacity 7-652 and have a average of yes wait for it 5-081 ,so they expect to take the place by storm. Managed by Keith Curle every ball won will be a trophy and running the extra mile will be cheered in the away stand. looking at the players no million pound touch of class, just team work and glory in reaching the 4th round. In Burton we have the know how of what to expect,we have a defence that leaks goals ,and a attack that can score, but can misfire often, but we can be sure they will give 100% effort. A real back to the wall game Northampton being the underdogs away from home cant lose. The good news is any Derby or local club fan, can just cruise down if they feel like it and pay on the gate.this would be appreciated because we need the cash for our January transfer budget. Good luck Nigel and the boys. Would like to say we can concentrate on the league if we lose, but alas it takes money to do that. Looking at being beat by Northampton Town they attract 2-000 fans per home game than us and now look like getting over £400-000 just to get to the next round. Taking the Pirelli by storm==They did, Just a hard working team confident running the exrta mile looking forward to the glory of reaching the 4th round. Burton fans knowing what to expect, a defence that leaks goals, and a attack that misfires often ,and the side did give 100% which made the result much worse. Northampton never seemed the underdogs but seemed in total control, and if i was a scout i know what players i would be looking at, and if Burton get cash for anyone it would be fantastic business. To any fan just taking the game in look on the bright side you saw goals, pity it was not a contest. and we move on a leaking defence and 6 goals in 2 games means we can score, but any space at the back means tired legs and age concern cannot keep up, and we are exposed for moving forward. perhaps defining space bringing back the yellow brick wall with players with limited ability's is the way to go. If we cannot take chances, cannot defend space, we reduce the playing area so our golden oldies do not after run around chasing shadows. And oh dear i bet the budget means we cant afford what we have, just thinking of Fleetwood leaves me cold they love to cross and score,

Boyce scores instead of hitting the bar, we may well have gone on to win.
Not papering over the cracks, we didnt defend against a big team, but at 1-0 we were playing well and creating chances.
We chucked away a great opportunity. But some are going overboard.

That’s very true Ian. If Boyce had of scored we were in with a great shout. To be honest he should have buried it but again missed chances have cost us. The worrying thing is we’ve started conceding too many goals again. I’ll calm down soon just very frustrated and disappointed . We will bounce back that I am sure of.

The performance is disappointing and that hurts.
Everyone has a bad day at the office. We move on. It is how the players respond in the next game that will show their character.
What struck me was how much the money loss hurt me. More than the football. It speaks volumes for the FA Cup in 2020 and the finances of clubs in the lower leagues that the money loss hurts so much. It used to be a cup that you wanted to stay in as long as possible just because you wanted to stay in the cup / play a big club. For football reasons not monetary ones. Sad really.
And look who we could have won (as it used to say on Bullseye)...

I didn't go yesterday, my views on what I have read are...
Northampton did a job on us - well done to them. We got beat by the better team on the day.
I imagine Northampton are feeling the same as we did when we beat premier League Bournemouth in the cup this year. Lower league teams winning in the cup is not a crisis.
Fraser had a bad game according to many. Another goal and an assist for him. Christ we have a good player if yesterday was bad.
Our defensive frailties in the last few games - we have been with JJOT and Wallace (will the mystery "illness" ever get better). We conceded very little in the first 3 months of the season when they were arguably first names on the team sheet.

When he said the lowest side left in the competition are at home to...irked me

I couldn’t believe nobody had mentioned the Boyce miss until this afternoon tbh... I haven’t watched it back but at the time I couldn’t believe he’d missed it, it looked nailed on and we’d have been right back in it. Weird game yesterday, it was the ease of the goals that stood out. Still the pint of Bass was decent, COYB.

Why the f*** is the kickoff 2.01pm? I believe its to encourage us to take a minute to think about our mental health.... All ties are taking this minute for this purpose before ko... The Arsenal Leeds game tonight kicked off at 7.56pm... now that is taking the biscuit good cause or no good cause.

I was hoping the draw would have sent us to Bristol rovers or Coventry away. Derby at home would have been good. Oh well. C'est la vie.

I don't know if everyone does this but in my mind I always stay in the FA Cup long after we have gone out. For example, when the winners of Northampton v Derby get pulled out of the hat in the next round I think to myself 'Damn, we could have been going to Arsenal'. I will usually do that for the next round also, based on the foregone conclusion that we would have beaten Derby and Arsenal.

Two days late but here goes.
Yes, it was dreadful. But. My take on it was this - I don't think anyone had a particularly 'bad' game. I just saw 10 VERY tired players out there. Even Lucas wasn't his usual self. Yes - if Liam had scored instead of hit the bar, different game. It's only the cup. Interesting to see lots of very new people on here with very negative views.
One last semi-silly thought; I hope Joe Sbarra watched the first half very closely because then he will have seen a very small player completely boss a game against opposition from a higher league. Take a bow Sam Hoskins. To be fair, four or five them had blinders.
