Lots of poor things about the game today. In no particular order: the ref, the Rotherham fan who thought they had won the cup, our 2nd half performance, Lucas akins, missed chances, the woodwork ....... I could go on.
My head is saying " we have had two tough home games against two decent teams relegated from the championship" my heart is saying " two home games and no goals scored is not good enough".

Wasn't expecting us to lose today but hadn't really done any digging into how Rotherham would play. I expected them to try to play a bit of football and it sounds like they came for the battle.
Don't want this season to turn into a what if and don't want to be playing catch up so early. After the early Sunderland game on the TV today (where Marcus played quite well, Tom Naylor not quite so good. McLoughlin solid and Flannagan dropped and where he belongs, on the bench) I was looking at the fixtures and then the table and thinking we night sneak into the top 6. I was also thinking we play much better football than either Sunderland or Pompey, but sometimes football doesn't come into it.
Instead it's Roherham sitting in 6th and us in 16th. Fine margins but 10 places different.
Tough away game coming up, we can be sure that shithouse Robinson will have his team set up to niggle, to smash and foul us all over the park and the Kassam is never an easy place to go to at the best of times.
I'm hoping Temps is fit enough to give the manager a dilemma. I'd like to see a natural wide man out wide and I'm "itching" to see Broadhead get a run up top. I'm starting to think maybe Boycie needs a game on the bench to get his spark and his hunger back, he's meant to be our main and used to be such a brilliant and clever finisher with his head. He's been missing quite a few biggish chances.
We've got to be brave though and trust that once we click we'll be too good for too many of the league. I hope it starts Tuesday but I've got an awful feeling we may need to wait for Shrewsbury away to kick start our season.

Not sure the answer for Boyce is a spell on the bench - he needs to move on in my opinion. Apart from a good ball in for the broadhead chance at the end I can't remember much of a contribution. It's the same most weeks.

It's the same most weeks. But then where are the goals going to come from? 1 goal every 3.5 games - hardly irreplaceable is it. He scored 1 in 2 up in Scotland and he doesn't look interested in playing in league 1. Sell him whilst we can still get some money for him and we could try and get a replacement in. From what I have seen thougg this season Lucas/broadhead/sarkic would all be a good option up front without Boyce.

Definitely penalty too. The ref has the perfect view and doesn't give it 🤦

Thanks for that In real time I thought that Kieran had made a mistake but he was very unlucky indeed, also I agree with NC, if that's not a penalty we won't get one all season, The worst ref since being in the football league, even worse than Mr Water Hotter.

I forgot about the Rotherham fan who ran on to the pitch.
Anybody know what the stewards/police did with him.
One of those issues which is absolute zero tolerance for me.

Just watched the match on iFollow. Burton didn’t play badly, but again paid the price for not finishing off chances, especially first half. The goal was one of those bizarre moments but they all count and if you get the ball and have a go from there, always a chance it will go in. Penalty decisions often baffles me - you see them given for the slightest touch, even when the ball is clearly played first. That tackle was a full-on foul and yellow card anywhere on the pitch. Slid in, feet up? Missed the ball completely and clattered him. The ref was a couple of feet away - he was looking at the incident - he definitely saw what everyone else saw. Inept or cheat? I don’t like giving stick to match officials but come on...

The pen denied, I've watched it over and over again and convinced the ref would never ever have given anything in our favour. He only gave us free kicks in our own half posing no danger to the opposition's goal. Some of their fans spent the whole match arguing with the stewards, how can they come and enjoy a football match doing that, must be the ale. MOTM Quinn for me he ran the show. Fans calling for subs, yes I see why as things needed shaking up a little but for me NC held out too long to make the changes. Boyce yes I reckon he needs to sit on the bench the odd game, give someone else a go. We did it with Billy Kee and it seemed to kick start him when he was dropping off his game in his time with us. We didn't do much wrong it's just those chances again when they come to whoever, Broadhead gets that early chance in off the bar and it's a different game, fine margins.

Yup, the stats say we had 17 shots with only 2 hitting the target. That has to improve.

I have said on FB, that would have been a penalty in rugby union and a sin bin, no attempt to wrap the arms in the tackle.
I am completely baffled how it was not given.

Good post on the ref bob, shows he is consistent they pushed shoved blocked and did everything possible to stifle the game, while having a powerful 3 pronged strike force. and they did it to good effect, not helped by a inadequate ref. Results are often made by fine margins and today was a prime example, looking at our team.O"Hara did a good job,The back 4 were competing for every ball and a lot of crosses to deal with.Corners reminded me of the old Wimbledon, they put 5 or 6 six foot plus giants at the edge of the goal area, and when the cross came, just charged at it. O"Hara and the boys must have felt like facing the charge of the light brigade. Midfield Edwards was muscled out of it and made nuisance value, My hero Willie Carlin would have relished annoying the big lumps. Quinn was immense a old crock he showed he can still mix it with the best. Fraser was always probing and trying to pull the strings, but space was limited. Akins battled but was a marked man,Boyce fed of scraps but failed when chances came, Broadhead got a taste of league football and found out it was not long till you got clattered got his golden moment in injury time and fluffed it, Templeton came on and rattled the bar, Man of the match the ref a complete joke,He took the ball at one stage from the halfway line and took it to the centre of the field and held it tight.fans around me shouted for the ball back,i thought he was going home with it.He then had a Rotherham player kick it up field from a drop ball,This was only a small part of his performance, Fraser was taken clean out with no contact on the ball from the defender,a more blatant penalty you would never see.and the total excuse for a official referee did not see it,and here is me just getting over the Portsmouth fiasco. Clough said it all our players did little wrong

The main points of analysis have been covered - the poor ref and the physical aspects of the Millers game (within and without the rules) which enabled them to out-muscle us and prevent us getting our football going as often as we'd have liked.
In addition I noticed how they always seemed to have a extra man outside the back post at corners who, with the gift of the proverbial free header caused us problems when he headed the ball back into the box every time.... The marking needs to be better.
Secondly we never seem to have enough, if any, speculative shots from outside the box, the sort fired low and hard in the direction of the goal that lead to deflections like those in both the Ipswich and Rotherham games that cost us the points..... Maybe our boys are told to keep working it till the odds of scoring are higher but so often the chance is then lost...

I think our style of play is better suited to the championship, where you get that little more time on the ball. League 1 is 100mph.
