Personally I'm not that bothered about Marcus leaving, I "was" hoping he could carry on progressing this season but he has only had half a seasons success in 4 years. I'm more concerned about the injury to Ben Fox, although I'm sure Nigel and his team will find decent replacements, Quite possibly from Scotland again if the reported interest comes to fruition.

I have to praise Nigel Clough yet again for his football knowledge and coaching and to praise Marcus Harness for his perseverance. I didn't see anything but an average Conference player for 3 years or so. When he went to Port Vale I thought it was the beginning of the end of his association with the club and indeed the Football League. Yet he must have worked hard. He started putting in some performances for us and the club has got its return on investment and it is £700,000 richer (if that figure is to be believed). Harness gets his reward too.
He could go on to better things. Yet he could also go back to being a peripheral player who only plays well when he has some confidence.
All things considered I think it is an excellent bit of business for the Brewers and for Marcus Harness.

You know the lovely thing about our club and our players, for as long as I've been following and I'm sure before then as well. They're ALL approachable and most of them are really cracking lads above all else. I'm sure we've had our occasional bad egg but I somehow manage to steer clear of them, or maybe they steer clear of me. I'll never forget Ryan Austin showing up for matches in a beaten up old motor. I'll never forget Bucko showing up to games with his boots in a tesco bag ;-) I'll never forget Lucas spending 10 minutes with me at the end of half a dozen games, to the point where when we greeted each other it was with a hug rather than a handshake. Aaro Webster, another who gives fans so much of his time. STILL. How lucky are we as fans to have players who give us that kind of access? I've got an overall point and it's the bolded part of your post. On the day of his move, the biggest day of his career so far Marcus took the time to get in touch and to send me a message thanking me for supporting him and thanking me for some kind words. We got talking about the fact I thought the only thing he was lacking was a bit of self confidence and as soon as I saw him trusted by us and getting a run of games, you could see him grow as a person and as a player. Fair enough he could and did still drift out of games, but his overall contribution can't be ignored. He needs to be loved, hell we all need to be loved. If he gets that love at Pompey I've absolutely no doubt he can step up another level at least. One of my favourite all time players was Gary Crosby, not just for how he played but also because of how hard he had to work for everything he ever got. Marcus is similar. Such a lovely lad, so much class. He'll make it and we'll get a bit more cash for him in 12 months. I've got everything crossed I'm not wrong. for his benefit and for ours.

A terrific story Broomo - I truly hope you’re right for Marcus’s sake and that he can push on in that big Portsmouth Lake.

Much as I'm disappointed to see Marcus leave after finally showing his ability (I liked what I saw last season), I'm delighted to see that there is a sell on clause. Any Club the Brewers size with a productive Academy should insert a sell on clause in all its transfer deals. As Observer says, this helps pay for the Academy once the production line starts to produce players attracted to "bigger" clubs. All it needs over time for one Marcus Harness to progress and hit Premier League status, the potential revenue from sell on fees can make a big difference to the Club's finances. Mind you, collecting the sell on fee isn't always easy from clubs the likes of Bolton.....

Following on from Broomo recalling the Rhino motor and the Bucko Tesco bag, I recall when we beat QPR 1-0 in the League Cup in the 2014/2015 season I went for a ticket to an away game post match. (A bit of research tells me it was Mansfield Town).
I was interested in the gathering by the QPR coach. I always go straight home after a game and seeing autograph hunters and the blue rope as a walkway for the players to the coach was new to me. I decided to wait around to see what happened. One by one, over a period of quite some time, the QPR players got on the bus. Half of them ignored everyone, half stopped and signed autographs.
Whilst this was going on a tiny chap with a bag over his shoulder looking like a schoolboy wandered by not getting any attention whatsoever. Matty Palmer. Then a battered white van appeared in the car park and Marcus Harness jumped in to it.

Much as I like celebrating the down to earth nature and friendliness of those fortunate enough to wear the shirt, I am also quite interested in knowing who were 'bad eggs'. Is that worthy of a thread or do you think it is a bit too negative and unnecessary?

I certainly don't know any of them well enough to jump to that kind of conclusion. I usually try to concentrate on the positive side of players so it was possibly a little bit out of order suggesting we've had any bad eggs. We've had a hell of a lot of good ones though ;-)

Just been reading another article on the Portsmouth. co.uk website about Marcus Harness. There are much cleverer people than me who can post links on here but basically there saying it’s the biggest outlay on a single player since they signed Erik Huseklepp from Bari for £1.5 million in August 2011.

Yeah we've probably just got 7 figures for him, and a hefty sell on clause... Winner winner. I'm not particularly enamored by the news that we're being sniffed around by clubs. Aberdeen in for Boyce, apparently.

More than a million is impressive - more than I thought!

Aberdeen in for Boyce, apparently. It will be us trying to sell Liam as much as other clubs being interested. We simply can't afford to let his contract runs down, if we do we lose the full 500k we paid for him. I know he's a good player but the reality is in his time with us his best return is 14 goals. I'm being harsh I'm sure but he disappointed me at times last season and that's because I see how good he could be. If he'd have got 25 goals last season we might get more cash but we also might try harder to keep him Can we get our money back and if so can we then find another centre forward who will get us 14 goals or more for cheaper? I think we can and I think the club will be looking to offload him if possible. He's been good but it's been a bit of a tantalising signing. So close to being fantastic.

I like Boyce and would want to keep him but for sure we can't let him run his contract down and leave for nothing
At same time I imagine in league one we can't afford to offer him wages to extend his contract either
This is a tough one

11 league goals last season and 14 in total is not a great return. He went through a 4 month period with only 2 league goals which was simply not good enough. I said last season we should have sold him when Bolton were in for him. I think we should sell him now if we can.

Boyce cost us somewhere in the region of £500/600k. If we can either recoup that or slightly more it would be good business. If offered £750k plus a sell on fee that would be good business given the contract situation. I don't think we've really used him properly so far so he hasn't score as many as we expected, seeing him playing out on the wing at times was incredibly frustrating.

Nigel did this with Christian Moore. Made him a better striker when he moved him up front again.
