I have mixed views on this one. If only for the fact that I didn’t get to Charlton’s ground but I’ve been to Sunderland,I want Sunderland to win this one. I don’t dislike / want to be rid of either of them. Any views?

Either for me, have yet to visit either stadium. Would be nice for John McLaughlin if Sunderland did it. The Charlton game was a Tuesday night last season making it a difficult one to get to.

Charlton.
Sunderland a bigger team. Likely to get more fans at that home game than Charlton. Also brings a bit more attention to the league having a "big" club around.

Charlton for me Sunderland in league 1 magic, a full away end and we need them. And being mean some of our lads who refused contracts, staying in our league. Sunderland and portsmouth in league 1 , it is good for us

I like to see the bigger clubs suffer a little despite our connections with a couple of Sunderland players, a Charlton victory would ok but not really fussed if they don't.

Well that's an own goal n a half! Was it trumped by Tom Flanagan's 'winner'?

Well that's an own goal n a half! Was it trumped by Tom Flanagan's 'winner'? I don't really "blame" anyone for us going down last day of the season. If I did, it would be Tom. He's such a weak defender it's not true. The number of goals he caused us by pretending to be a tough tackler, The number of headers he ducked under. The number of stupid, ridiculous free kicks he gave away got to the stage of being embarrassing. I try not to criticise our own players, especically while they're still with us but I think I probably made an exception for Tom. The first Preston goal, they've won two headers in our 6 yard box that my sister would have made a better challenge for. When Sunderland signed him I told my Sunderland supporting mates he'd end up getting Jack Ross the sack. Brian Clough would have called him a right fanny adams. Brian would have been right.

What have your Sunderland supporting mates said about his season overall broomo? A young inexperienced defender in the championship last season - was always going to be tough. I thought he would do well in league 1 this year.

Pleased Charlton have gone up as they play some good football and will probably do alright in the Championship. Sunderland just seemed to be waiting for something to happen without forcing the play. Just goes to show it doesn't matter how big a club is it's what the 11 players do on the pitch. As for Tom & John, they are both players I'd have liked to be still with us. John is a class keeper and is worthy of playing in the Championship but wanted to move back up North! Tom is a good defender at Div1 level although he's not as classy as McFazean. We'll see them next season then! COYB 👍🏻

I thought he would do well in league 1 this year. They think the central defence is what has cost them. As well as signing Will Grigg to be fair. They spent nearly £6m on transfers alone this season and still haven't gone up. They're not happy. I can't put down what they've really said about Tom otherwise I'd break Norah's swear filter permanently ;-) My mates in general are reasonable lads as well, they think Ross should get another season at it and think it's the players who've let them down. These aren't lads who rant and rave. I'll try to get some exact quotes from them but I'll leave it for a day or two until they calm down. Understandably they're gutted and emotional right now, they feel like they didn't turn up today. I tend to agree. I thought once they'd got the gift of the goal they sat in way too much. Tom is a little unlucky that his block has fallen straight to their lad but he's a centre half, who was he marking? Charlton had two lads at the back post, he should have been almost touch tight. He's marking fresh air and I've been watching football for more than 30 years and have never seen fresh air score a goal.

Concede a few less in these games and score a couple more and that is the difference. I only caught the last 10 minutes of the match today and there looked only one winner at that point. Sunderland looked knackered and not surprised that they gifted Charlton a chance.

Disappointed at the result.
Lee Bowyer was a nasty piece of work as a footballer. I wanted Sunderland to win. A great old club.
John Mac as a good a goalkeeper as we’ve had. Wish we could have kept him.
Tom Flan played in our promotion side and gave everything asked of him whenever he played. He got a bit of unwarranted abuse for wanting to better his career, who wouldn’t want to further their career and eventually end up somewhere like Sunderland!? He offered cover across the back four, again I’d be happy if he was still with us. I have to say Charlton were the better side and probably were over the season.
So a fair result.

I agree about the result. I agree about Bowyer. I agree about John Mac, another who I probably didn't realise how good he was for us until after he'd left. I agree about Tom giving his all during the promotion season and in fact whenever he played. I certainly wouldn't abuse him or anyone else for furthering their career. you've got to. Where we possibly disagree is on his overall ability and the fact he hasn't seemed to learn. It's ok making those kind of mistakes when you're young and learning, as long as you do learn. That's why our manager plays the kids as early as he can in their career. Get your experience, make your mistakes but try not to make the same mistake three, four, five times. You've got to show you're capable of learning. Tom seems to lose his man at the far post way too often. He loses his man in the six yard box way too often and he still hasn't learned that going to ground as a defender is an absolute last resort I don't rate him at all and think he rated himself too highly as well. He struts around and points at others like he's Beckenbauer. He may go on to prove me stupidly wrong but I'n glad he's not our liability any more. Harsh I know.

Personally I never thought Tom was good enough for us and obviously Nigel didn’t either - always a mistake in him and going forward as a full/wing back he didn’t have the trickery or pace to get past his man or ability to play the telling final ball. In my opinion Nigel called it exactly right - as he almost always does when judging a player. John McLaughlin is a good shot stopper with many strengths but the ability to come and take cross is what keepers are judged on at higher levels and he didn’t have that - much prefers to stay on his line. But a nice guy now playing at his level.

Wow that was a shock to some Sunderland remaining in league 1, Sometimes i get bitter,18 million pound wage bill,3 million on Will grigg, and still in league 1. being positive all the clubs that fill our away end are welcome in our league. Bitter because i see players being bought for 3 to 15 million in league 1 or the championship and it makes me think if Nigel bought 6 players for 1 million each.We compete now on a shoestring with kids and old heads that will play on the cheap. So i feel no sympathy for fallen giants.but only pride in what we achieve.
