I read it entirely that he's the new Fadz but the most telling thing is that he's versatile and that has always been important for a player in a Nigel Clough side. Some see that as a weakness but they're the ones always determined to find a problem. I see it as a strength. Whatever the main position the guy is going to play, I'd lay money that not only Nigel is already certain of that position but that the player, too, has come to us in the full knowledge of what that position will be. It's unthinkable that it wouldn't have been part of the discussion. I concur entirely, things change, of course they do, but if JJ gets selected at CB I dont think that will come as a surprise to him and I dont foresee teddies out of the pram. I believe there is a great deal of mutual respect between Clough and Wilder. Overlapping CBs anyone? In his introductory interview (free on ifollow) JJ does make reference to him possibly playing and learning a new position which suggests that he could be used as a centre back. I still have a hunch that we may see an out and out centre back sign this summer as well but I might be wrong.

Never heard of the chap, apparently hard working lower league player,he got promotion with wilder, but moving onto the blades he never took him with him. Nice to know he is aggressive and 6 foot two, catchi name John Joe o'toole.i ain't got a clue were he might play. Midfield has been our strength. Is someone leaving, He fits the bill, can play different positions, i feel he could be playing central defence especially with a 2 year contract. The good news most players signed by Clough i have never heard of,and some even make international players

Cobblers pay tribute to JJOT.
I had forgotten that he had played under Wilder...

Yeah but that's only cos he doesn't have his Jackson Irvine style hair anymore. If he still had to wash and go he would probably have signed for any one of the other 91 league clubs who ALL own their own training ground with deluxe showers ;-)

Nice dig but he has moved to greener fields, and we stay a community football club, and i must say Clough never fails to surprise. He sees john-joe has a team player,A brick that can support the youngsters. 5 signings already ,and the nice thing so far only one left who was offered a contract, Not to worried about transfers, Clough always states only if it is in the best interest of the club

If I'm wrong about him I'll eat my own hat. The Bray will stay. We'll just be waiting to announce it so we have news spread over a few days/weeks rather than letting it all out now. It's a long summer. I can't imagine the Beard will ever play for another manager again. Why would he? The one I'm eagerly awaiting news on is young Bradley. If he stays I'll dance a jig, we'll have got ourselves a 500k goalie for nowt and it'll be a huge statement if he decides to stay with us 'cos of the squad of players we've got and he fact he's enjoying himself playing under NC and his staff.

Be very surprised if he's signed to play at CB? He's a CM! Reckon he'll play Fraser out wide, with John Joe in with our finest footballer Quinn. I'd give Daniel a go in the CB position and get Reece back in the team at FB! Wallace looked decent at CB also? 🤔

Wallace looked decent at CB also? 🤔 Dave Mackay was arguably one of the games greatest central midfielders for Spurs when BC signed him and stuck him in the back four. Darren Stride was arguably our greatest ever central midfielder before NC stuck him in the back four. Both players continued to be brilliant and probably highly under rated as centre backs. He needs to be able to head it, he can. He might need to occasionally make a tackle, he can. He needs to be able to read the game, he can. With the style of football we've been playing and look like we're going to keep on playing, he needs to be comfortable on the ball and able to at least pick out a sensible simple pass. He can do that. If anything dropping back will save his legs and barring injury probably extend his career by a season or two. I can't say for sure as I have no real clue but I'm convinced we're going to at least try him there.

Reece all day long for me at LB but granted Daniel has more experience. I think we will sign another player at CB to replace McFadz.

The best thing Dave Mackay did as CB for Derby was to bring on a young 19yr old called Roy Macfarland along side him, have'nt we got a young CB who might be signing?

Surprised no one has mentioned another very successful convert from midfield to CB - John Mousinho...
Whether O’Toole plays CM or CB or elsewhere remains to be seen, only a few months until we get to find out

Whether O’Toole plays CM or CB or elsewhere remains to be seen, only a few months until we get to find out I agree and I think JFH started that and then Clouhh carried it on, it didn't alwayd go so well, in fact Moose struggled 1st year in the Championship (not the only one by any means). And then he came back, fought his way back into the team and played a vital part in us staying up season one. We brought in Bucko and Warnock and Moose was allowed to leave for a super deal at Oxford. In the end that didnt work. I dont know what goes on but Moose leadership and cohesion with the squad from before was a big loss. When he came back with Oxford this season he was back in midfield and subbed off at HT and lucky not to be sent off. Despite regular misguided criticism from elsewhere I reckon we did the right thing for Moose, allowed him to leave for a 3 year deal at Oxford. Unfortunately I reckon whilst good for him, it was not good for us (with the benefit of hindsight). But having decent people running our club, they regularly make decisions that reward those that have given the best service. Could be wrong on all of that by the way.

Agree with pretty much all of that. Mous first played CB for us under Gary Rowett, away at Northampton. I seem to recall SCS suddenly dropped out of the squad when his wife went into labour and John played there. Think he played there a couple of times and then JFH moved him permanently there when he decided not to use Ian Sharps.

I get what everyone is saying about players moving back into a CB position, especially later on in their careers. This has happened at many clubs including Burton, BUT why would we actually go out and sign a CM to play CB? Wouldn't it be easier just to sign a true CB?

This has happened at many clubs including Burton, BUT why would we actually go out and sign a CM to play CB? Wouldn't it be easier just to sign a true CB? I don't disagree craig1 but what I think is, usually a pure centre half isn't comfortable stepping out or going "one forward" certainly not at our level anyway. We've either been blessed or been lucky to have had a couple of players who have really surprised me with their ability on the ball in Kyle and in Tom Naylor. I was literally shocked and amazed at how comfortable Kyle was, I didn't think he had that in his locker. Tom was great in midfield for us but I also thought he was an absolute revelation in central defence. Even Mous before those two could if we needed step out one. I think what we look to have in JJ is someone who can probably cover both. It gives us a lot of options and a lot of cover all rolled into one player, when we've got the size of squad we've got, it's such an advantage if players can cover their mates if anyone picks up a knock or a suspension. Now having typed all of that, maybe those who are saying he'll play in hte back four are jumping to wild conclusions and we've signed him as midfield cover ;-)
