The Daily Mail providing the story?
Skeptical in the highest order.

The Daily Mail providing the story? Skeptical in the highest order. Why? He is an NHS doctor?

Because I don't trust the Daily Mail to report anything correctly. They'll be telling us next we will be having power blackouts and the worst winter in living memory, just as they have for the last ten years. they also told us to vote Tory.
Report on Newsnight last night gave the counter argument that it is impossible for the body the break down any of the rubber into its constituent carsenagic parts. Where lies the truth? I don't know, but the Daily Mail is not the most reliable.

Impossible is a strong word (did the report actually say that?), I think the body is capable of doing a lot more than it is given credit for. Hydrochloric acid is one of the many chemicals released in our stomach when we eat. Anyway, inhaling and injesting rubber dust and particles doesn't sound very healthy to me.

I don't know if there is any foundation to this claim but if it is proven there would be MASSIVE ramifications.

I definitely saw it on one programme but can't remember which one now sorry and sorry for making you endure Newsnight!!!
Instinctively I don't think swallowing lots of rubber would be good for you but the spokesperson on the programme I saw was insistent it was not a cause.
Anyway Ian sure there will be more research, one case does not prove a link.

Actually Newsnight was ok to listen to while surfing with me foot elevated... UK and the EU, Refugees, Drugs and Atheism.
One of the stories.... An American Pharmecutical company make a drug that cures Hepatitis C The cost to make the drug needed for a 12 week course of treatment - £100 The price they charge the UK gov't for that one course - £35K
