I've started this new thread in response to comments made on the Jon M. thread relating to our squad and other teams in L2 signings. Terraceman The unbeknown factor is how the other clubs have improved and how the 4 relegated sides from league 1 and the 2 promoted sides from the Conference will perform Me I know Shrewsbury, York, Northampton, Oxford and Luton have all been busy over the summer. I think Tranmere have really cleaned house so don't know what to expect from them. everard - Do we still need another striker - big lad or not? - other two relegated clubs Stevenage and Carlisle and then there's Portsmouth, Plymouth and Bury and both Mansfield and Newport could build claymillman - We have Luton back, along with Portsmouth, Plymouth, Shrewsbury, Bury, Tranmere ++++++++++++++ Regarding our squad. The keeper position seems complete. If we sign Ribeiro and Damo gets back in the squad the D seems complete. Midfield looks ok in the middle and on the right side, another left-footer would be nice but can't see that happening, we'll probably wait and see how Jimmy comes through his rehab, use Gurks on the left at times and hope McFadzean extends his loan past Xmas. So that leaves the strikers, yes I would like to see one more at least on a 6 month loan until Jimmy comes back (?). When Jimmy returns fit that would allow Gurks and Akins to push up to fulltime strikers. Attached is a file I compiled on some of the other L2 clubs activity....feel free to download it, add to it and re-post on here. The League is looking quite competitive on paper at least but sometimes players take time to settle in. We shall see.....COYB!!! L2 signings.txt (3.29 KB)

This is the first season in L2 when I feel we are good for the play off's or even better. The squad looks strongest yet, we have the foundation of last seasons gelled team with quality additions. Hopefully Ribeiro get's offered a contract, looks a decent player and the scunny fans seem to rate him. I also know a Stevenage fan who only had positives about Mousinho (can be injury prone) and Akins.
As for scoring, from what I've seen of Beavon so far I doubt we will see a better first touch and change of direction in L2 this season. Hopefully McGurk will get some consistency going (reminds me of Maghoma, great talent just needs to be channelled) and will come up trumps. I agree Peacockbrewer the left side of the park looks weaker compared to the right (especially if Ribeiro signs). Harness has impressed and hopefully he gets some play time, maybe fresh legs for the last 20 mins of a game once McDonald has softened them up.
As for a target man, would be nice but maybe not essential. We have enough pace up front to run the channels if we need to go direct.
On one final point, from watching the Blades and Hednesford games the long ball looks to have gone, the ball was on the green stuff plenty of time. Probably to our disadvantage at Hednesford since they played on a rugby pitch.
Roll on the start of the season and hoping for a quick start from a settled team.

I have to agree gentleman, we look very strong. Given that little rub of the green that you need(remember last seasons run of sendings off and injuries plus certain players not fitting in) I think we could do very well. A much more flexible squad with lots of options. I too would like to see Ribiero sign as i'm not sure what cover we have for Edwards.

Couldn't agree more. I don't think I've ever been more excited about our prospects. Whilst it may take time to settle, over the season I'm very optimistic particularly if Ribiero signs and Harness ends up being the surprise package.

Agree with all above. I think from what I have seen McDonald could play left wing and Marcus on the right, and see how this works out.

The Brewers squad is taking shape very nicely, well done to the management , I am starting to feel a sense of excitement and optimism, the only thing that I would like to see added is a quality striker. COYB

Billy Kee is the man - this season will be his best ever in a Brewers shirt. Mark my words.

Personally I think the league will be very tough this season, I thought the quality was poor last season on the whole and the league was quite tight top to bottom. Bury, York, Northampton and Shrewsbury all look to have strong squads, I suspect Portsmouth, Southend and Plymouth will be strong along with newcomers Stevenage, Tranmere, Carlisle, Luton and Cambridge and maybe Wimbledon could be a surprise package. At the other end of the table I think it will be a long hard season for Exeter, Wycombe, Accrington, Morecambe, Mansfield and possibly Oxford. I could be quite a way off but having looked at the transfer dealings and fans forums I came up with those conclusions. Exeter and Oxford forums are very negative about their clubs prospects for the season. Me i'm quietly confident in the Albion.

I said for much of last season that we were a mid table team making good on a poor league. The ace in our pack was (and obviously still is) a manager who has a knack of grinding out results and who is far more tactically astute than many people give him credit for. His support staff must also take much of the credit. We certainly look stronger than last season but in my opinion (and it is only an opinion) finishing in the top 7 will still be a huge achievement for the club.

Re: our squad - apparently Christian Ribeiro has returned to Exeter for another trial... and I thought George Taft filled in well at leftback against a strong Ram side..

Bury have signed James Poole from Hartlepool on a free and he may start today. Bury are going to be very strong this year.

attaching an updated file on L2 Transfers and signings. Anything starting with a star '**' is new. terraceman, I see what you mean about Wimbledon possibly being a surprise. Tubbs and Akinfenwa make for a defenders nightmare, and their highlights vs Shrewsbury yesterday looked great, pundits called it the match of the day for all leagues. L2 signings take3.txt (5.59 KB)

Looks to me like he would like to swap kee and/or mcgurk for a better striker

I have read the article three times and there is no mention of a possible swap?

You need to read between the lines. The last sentence is basically saying come and make me an offer for players who didn't start v oxford.
Don't think he would let sherrif go. Two of those quality players are kee and mcgurk. Maybe add palmer to that but he won't be on big wages.
We are overloaded with strikers at the moment who can't all play and tend to command higher wages.
I'm sure he would offload one to get another in.
