EVO-STIK League Mickleover Sports are set to host League Two Burton Albion next week for the KC Trust Trophy.
First played last season, the fixture in memory of Keith Calladine who was a supporter of both clubs, is taking place on Wednesday (23 July) with half of the proceeds from the 7.15 kick off going to the British Heart Foundation.
The fan and sheet metal worker had suffered from heart problems for a number of years and had a quadruple bypass in 2009. He was watching Mickleover Sports in action at the Raygar Stadium in April 2012 when he collapsed and died. The day before the 67-year-old had enjoyed a Burton Albion game at the Pirelli Stadium and was a regular at both clubs.
The KC Trust was set up by Mr Calladine’s son Paul to provide defibrillators in Derbyshire to prevent others suffering in the same way. The first one was presented to Mickleover after last season's inaugural memorial match and he has continued to raise thousands of pounds for charity by running in several marathons for the British Heart Foundation and the Papworth Hospital.

I will arrange that you can pop it in the club house if there isn't. I will inform the men at the gate

Brewers win 1 v 0 with Billy Kee goal Assume the game would be typically scrappy on the bobbly surface.

I declare an interest here as I am also a committee member at Mickleover and my husband a director.
And having been to both matches in the last 24 hours I can say that the pitch is better than the one at Hednesford yesterday which actually belongs to a Conference North side. Indeed it is as good and in some respects better than the old one at Eaton Park!
More to the point…...Gary Rowett actually complimented the groundsman on the state of the pitch.
With regard to being scrappy- again I would say no worse than yesterday or any other friendlies I have seen this year , but the point of this game was actually primarily a joint venture to raise money for the KC (heart) charity and to cement the close relationship of the two clubs and many of their fans and the result of which is another defibrillator can be purchased.

I didn't realise the link between the Brewers and Keith Callandine tonight. I am delighted that the charity was a good recipient. Pitch was fine IMHO...

Just to explain for those not in the know It was Keith Calladine's father who died of a heart attack during a Mickleover match who was a fan of both clubs. Paul, who is married to Fleur Robinson started the charity in order to purchase defibrillators, one of which is already at the ground and can be used to give quick medical treatment to a heart attack victim. Although training has been given to some club officials the style of machine makes it easy to use, with easy ongoing instructions given. More than enough money was raised tonight to buy another unit. This will be an ongoing annual event and although the great and the good (a mayor and MP at least) were there it is meant to be a hospitable, almost informal match with players staying around after the match for instance Robby Weir attended but did not play and Billy Kee fed the baby on the patio post match. It was a reminder for me of the post match drinks that the players had at the bar at Eaton Park and the camaraderie of non league football that Mr T would say we have lost now that the Brewers have the swish new Pirelli and League football. Ok rant over - am perhaps feeling a little bit sensitive after reading what I must describe as an unprofessional and unwarrantedly sarcastic report of the match by an unnamed journalist from the Burton Mail, one who evidently didn't want to be there by the tone of his report! www.burtonmail.co.uk/Mickleover-Sports-0-Burton-Albion-1-Match-report/story-21748662-detail/story.html?

I have to say the game was pretty forgettable as a football match. However it was good to see the young lads on show, who all appear to be blessed with confidence and some good skills on the ball. I thought it displayed our academy off very well. Billy was struggling to get into the game, which was understandable, but still scored the goal. This is something Billy is always likely to do. I am not at all sure what GR is going to do about the other trialists on show. Both full backs looked pretty competent though. With a game like last night's, and all of the various players being used, you can not expect too much flowing football I reckon. You can though judge some individual performances. I am going to select a Man of the Match. To me it was easily Joe Doyle. He played tirelessly throughout, and was fully committed. I think he really can challenge for a first team shirt.

Reading the Mail artical I only recognized 4 (Four) of the 17 (Seventeen) or so Burton players listed. Looks like GR has a large pool of backup talent for the coming season if he needs it.

The club take on 8 scholars each season age 16 who have the chance to earn pro contracts. This year I believe all 8 came from the academy. In the past the club have taken players on who have been released from bigger clubs to make the 8 up.
I believe this year is a particularly strong year and the 8 names were confirmed some time ago.
I say all this because I recognise a number of those players from the mickleover friendly as being new scholars.
Target from now on at the Academy is to produce at least two pros from each intake of 8 scholars.
As for the scholars who fail to make the grade - many end up getting scholarships to play for US college teams and get a degree at the same time

Good to see Joe Doyle and Marcus Harness having a decent start to their first season
My gut feeling is they will be on periphery all season but getting stronger and more experienced to make a bigger impact next season

Clint Dempsey came through the USA College system, classy player.

Good to see Joe Doyle and Marcus Harness having a decent start to their first season My gut feeling is they will be on periphery all season but getting stronger and more experienced to make a bigger impact next season I was impressed with both of these when I first saw they playing a couple years ago in the youth FA Cup when we beat Sheff Wed I think it was, as well as Matty Palmer. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that i read somewhere (it could have been on here in another thread) that Ben Fox is the first true Academy player to play for the Brewers (Hednesford match). Burton-Albion-vs-Hednesford-Town-Match-report The bench comprised five youth-teamers in goalkeeper Charlie Hornby, Shae Yates, Ash Thorpe, Shay Allen and Ben Fox. There was a special moment for academy graduate Fox, who made his debut to rest Mousinho’s tired legs 16 minutes from time, and the youngster’s first touch almost brought a goal, but his dipping effort was just over the bar. That would have been something, to score a goal like that in your first game....

I'm not sure what they mean by true academy player. The academy only started 4 seasons ago.
Maybe he joined first day. But most of the rest have been on board for at least two or three years.
I think Palmer joined from derby academy not sure when.
Four years ago they had to go and find teams from under 9 upto under 16 in a rush of course.
Now they start looking at kids as young as 5 or 6 to then pick the best ones to sign age 9.
They still consider players released from other academies though.
I watched that sheff wednesday youth cup match as well.
Sheff wed just hoofed it to two strikers every chance they got. Awful football. Burton tried to play a bit of football and the one great move they put together came off.
I've always thought Harness and Doyle looked flashy players with good skill but they will need to add strength and substance to do well in League Two.
