We look upon the attendances at home matches this season as disappointing. I think we should be able to sustain a 3,000 average, which would be approaching 7% of the population. Ideally the target should be to raise that to 10% but that is probably unlikely given other factors. Having had a quick search on Wiki, Accrington and Crewe are the only places among teams that we have played in L2 who have a similar population to Burton (Dagenham is an amalgamtion of 4 boroughs and 4 historical clubs).
I believe that historically, when BAFC have been on sustained bad run, it takes a very good run of results to tempt back the casual supporter. At present, many previously regular supporters need to be persuaded back. Perhaps the club needs to look at the admission charge for students and "over 16s in full time education" as it is amongst the highest in the division, even though adult, child and OAP admission is gratefully amongst the lowest.
I also believe there is an inherant apathy among the local population going back decades. This applies to other events as well as football. Every time someone attempts to promote a musical event with famous acts they end up losing a pile of money.
I think attendances will pick up now that the holiday season and the summer sports seasons have ended.
I guess that, based on a ratio of footballing success to head of population, Burnley and Blackburn are the two most successful clubs of all time.
